On a Snapdragon X laptop running Windows 11, the most useful battery settings are in Settings > System > Power & battery. Select Best power efficiency, turn on Energy saver when runtime matters, lower brightness, choose a lower display refresh rate when available, shorten on-battery screen-off and sleep timers, and review which apps consume power in the background. Disable Wi-Fi or Bluetooth when you do not need them; use airplane mode only when you need no wireless connection at all.
These are Microsoft’s general Windows controls, not Snapdragon X-specific tuning switches. Your laptop may hide some options because of its display, sensors, firmware, manufacturer settings, or Windows version. No published Microsoft guidance establishes a guaranteed number of extra hours for Snapdragon X models, so use the settings as workload-dependent trade-offs rather than promises of a fixed gain.
Start with the controls Windows exposes on your PC
Open Settings > System > Power & battery. Windows 11 is the relevant baseline for a current Snapdragon X laptop. Microsoft’s power-mode documentation also covers Windows 10, but Windows 10 support ended on October 14, 2025; menu names and available controls can differ on older installations. Keep the Power mode selector visible while you tune the rest of the system. Some PCs show all three modes, while others show fewer choices depending on system configuration.

1. Select Best power efficiency
How to change it
- Open Settings.
- Select System, then Power & battery.
- Expand Power mode.
- Choose Best power efficiency while running on battery.
Microsoft describes this option as “Best power efficiency – Saves battery life.” It is the correct starting point when runtime is more important than peak responsiveness. Windows may reduce or delay some performance-oriented behavior, so a demanding task can feel less responsive.
When Balanced is better
Choose Balanced if Best power efficiency makes an application feel sluggish, causes longer compile or export times, or interferes with a workload that needs consistent speed. Balanced is a practical compromise for mixed work such as office applications, browsing, calls, and occasional heavier tasks.
Reserve Best performance for specific work
Best performance favors responsiveness and sustained performance over battery duration. Use it temporarily for a workload that genuinely benefits from it, then return to Best power efficiency or Balanced when the task is finished. The sources do not provide a universal runtime penalty or a Snapdragon X-specific benchmark for any of these modes.
2. Turn on Energy saver
Use it immediately when the battery is low
In Settings > System > Power & battery, turn on Energy saver when you need to stretch the remaining charge. Depending on the Windows build and laptop, you can also set Energy saver to switch on automatically at a selected battery percentage. Microsoft says the feature can dim the screen and limit background processes; the controls shown vary by device. See Microsoft’s battery-saving tips.

Understand the trade-off
Energy saver is a broad intervention. It can reduce background activity and display brightness at the same time, which is useful during travel but may interrupt background synchronization or make a dim screen harder to read. If you need a full-speed foreground task, leave Energy saver off for that period and use the individual display and timeout controls instead.
3. Reduce display power without making the screen unusable
Set a comfortable brightness
Screen brightness is one of the easiest settings to change while on battery. Use the brightness slider in Quick Settings or in Settings > System > Display. Lower it only as far as comfortable for the room; an unreadable display encourages you to raise brightness again and provides no practical benefit.
Choose a lower refresh rate
If Settings > System > Display > Advanced display lists multiple refresh rates, select a lower rate for static work such as reading, writing, or spreadsheets. Higher refresh rates require more display work and therefore generally use more power. A lower rate can make scrolling and animation look less smooth.

Some Windows 11 systems offer Dynamic refresh rate, which lets a compatible display vary its rate. Microsoft limits this feature to compatible hardware and configurations; it will not appear on every Snapdragon X laptop. The power-settings and battery guidance is documented at Microsoft Support.

4. Shorten screen-off and sleep timers
Change the on-battery timers
- Open Settings > System > Power & battery.
- Expand Screen, sleep, & hibernate timeouts (the exact heading can vary by Windows build).
- Set a shorter On battery power, turn my screen off after value.
- Set a shorter On battery power, put my device to sleep after value.
A screen that remains lit while you are away consumes power without advancing your work. A shorter sleep delay also prevents idle applications from running for no reason. Select a timeout that does not interrupt reading, presentations, or long operations; an overly aggressive value can be inconvenient.
What the three- and five-minute figures mean
Microsoft’s updated defaults for the modern-standby device category show 3 minutes on battery and 5 minutes while plugged in for both screen-off and sleep. Those are configuration examples, not measurements of Snapdragon X battery life and not a requirement for every model. Check your laptop’s actual values and adjust them to your routine. 5. Find and limit power-hungry background apps
Check Battery usage first
- Go to Settings > System > Power & battery.
- Open Battery usage.
- Review the applications listed for the recent usage period.
- Identify programs consuming power when you are not actively using them.
Do not disable every background process indiscriminately. Messaging, calendar, security, backup, and synchronization tools may need background access. Restrict only apps whose background work is unnecessary for you.

For an individual application, open its entry in the battery-usage list and use the available background-activity control, such as Never or a similar restriction. The exact choices depend on whether the app is packaged for Windows and on the current Windows version. Some desktop programs manage their own background behavior and will not expose a Windows-level switch.

6. Use battery-oriented options for video and graphics
Video playback
For a laptop used to watch downloaded or streamed video, open the video-playback settings available through Windows and select Optimize for battery life. Where offered, allow lower-resolution playback on battery. The visual result may be less sharp, especially on a high-resolution panel, but decoding and display work can be reduced.
Graphics preference for individual apps
For an application with a graphics preference, choose Power saving when image quality or maximum performance is not essential. This is useful for light editing, casual visualization, or other software that offers a choice between a power-saving and high-performance graphics path. Heavy 3D work, rendering, and similar workloads can still consume substantial power even with a power-saving preference.
7. Turn off radios you are not using
Disable Wi-Fi or Bluetooth selectively
Use Quick Settings or Settings > Network & internet to turn off Wi-Fi when you have no need for a network connection. Turn off Bluetooth when no peripheral is connected or expected. This removes the radio’s connection and scanning activity, but it also disconnects the services that depend on it.

Airplane mode is appropriate when you need no internet, Bluetooth, or other wireless communication. It is a broader choice than switching off one radio and can save the effort of changing several controls. It also means that Wi-Fi peripherals, wireless headphones, cloud synchronization, and network access stop until you re-enable the necessary connection.

8. Run Energy recommendations
Open Settings > System > Power & battery > Energy recommendations. Windows evaluates the hardware and current power state, then lists suggestions such as reducing brightness, shortening timeouts, or using a more efficient power mode. The list can differ when the laptop is plugged in versus on battery, and not every recommendation appears on every device because sensor and manufacturer support varies. Apply suggestions individually rather than accepting changes that would make your normal work impractical. This page is a convenient audit of settings, not a measurement of how many hours you will gain.
Choosing the right compromise for your work

Why a setting may be missing
- No Power mode selector: Windows can show different choices based on system configuration, firmware, and manufacturer policy.
- No Dynamic refresh rate: The panel or graphics configuration may not support it; use a fixed lower rate if one is listed.
- No background-activity switch: The application may be a traditional desktop program or may control its own background behavior.
- No Energy saver percentage: Some Windows builds expose only a manual toggle, while others provide an automatic threshold.
- No timeout option: Modern-standby behavior, organizational policy, or a manufacturer utility may control the setting. Check for Windows updates and the laptop maker’s power-management utility before assuming the battery is defective.
These differences are normal. Microsoft’s guidance applies to Windows PCs generally, and it does not identify a separate Snapdragon X-only control set.

- Start with the laptop on battery and record the settings you normally use.
- Set Power mode to Best power efficiency.
- Turn on Energy saver if you need immediate additional conservation, or configure its automatic threshold when available.
- Lower brightness to a comfortable level.
- Choose a lower refresh rate in Advanced display if the option exists.
- Shorten the on-battery screen-off and sleep timers without disrupting your work.
- Review Battery usage and restrict background activity for nonessential apps.
- Apply video or graphics power-saving preferences for the specific task.
- Turn off unused radios, or use airplane mode for a completely offline session.
- Open Energy recommendations and review any remaining suggestions.
Change one group of settings at a time if you are trying to understand which adjustment affects your routine. Windows does not provide a reliable, model-independent report that converts each switch into a number of extra hours.
What you should—and should not—expect
These controls reduce avoidable consumption from processing, display updates, idle screen time, background applications, and wireless connections. Their effect depends on what your laptop is doing: a mostly idle document session has different power demands from video playback, a video call, software compilation, or 3D rendering.
The available Microsoft material does not contain a controlled comparison of Snapdragon X laptops, a guaranteed runtime increase, or a measured ranking of the settings. Treat the recommendations as ways to align Windows with your priorities. If the battery still drains unusually quickly after sensible settings changes, check battery health, active workloads, heat, and firmware rather than expecting another hidden Windows switch to produce a fixed improvement.
