Start with the app executable’s Properties dialog: open Compatibility, expand Windows on Arm, choose Change emulation settings, and leave the profile at Default unless the app still fails. Then test one less-restrictive adjustment at a time, moving to Safe, Strict, or Very strict only when necessary. These settings can improve compatibility for emulated x86 or x64 apps, but they can also reduce speed or make an app crash, so save the original configuration and retest after every change.
What these settings actually change
Snapdragon X PCs run Windows on Arm. An application may be compiled natively for Arm64, or it may be an x86 or x64 Windows program translated by Microsoft’s Prism emulator. Prism converts blocks of x86 instructions into Arm64 instructions and caches the translated code for later launches.
The emulation controls are per application, not global performance switches. They are intended for a particular executable that has a compatibility problem. Microsoft describes the normal profile as a balance between performance optimizations and compatibility. Stricter profiles enable additional emulation safeguards, which may make troublesome software work but generally consume more processing time or memory.

Prism handles user-mode application code. It does not translate kernel-mode drivers. If an application depends on a driver that has not been compiled for Arm64, changing the application’s Prism settings cannot repair that dependency.

Check for a native Arm64 build first
Before changing emulation behavior, visit the application publisher’s download or support page and look for a current Arm64 or Windows-on-Arm release. Native Arm software avoids translation overhead and is Microsoft’s preferred performance path. Update Windows and the application as well; a later release may contain an Arm-specific fix.
If the publisher offers only x86 or x64 builds, Prism is the normal way to run them on Windows 11 Arm. If the failure involves a required driver, hardware integration, or another kernel component, identify that limitation before spending time on per-app toggles. A driver must be Arm64 even when the visible application can run under emulation.
Where to find the controls
- Locate the actual application executable. In File Explorer, right-click the app shortcut, choose Open file location when available, and then right-click the program’s
.exefile. - Select Properties.
- Open the Compatibility tab.
- Under Windows on Arm, select Change emulation settings.
- Note or photograph the current profile and advanced checkboxes before changing anything.
- Choose the smallest change that matches the symptom, apply it, and run the same failing operation again.
The controls apply to that executable. If the product launches through a separate updater, launcher, service, or helper process, changing the wrong executable will have no effect. Repeat the check for the process that actually fails, using the publisher’s instructions when it identifies one.

What the four compatibility profiles mean

The names are not a guarantee that every application will work at the strictest level. Microsoft warns that changing emulation settings can cause an application to crash or stop launching. Treat each profile as a controlled experiment, not as a permanent ranking in which Very strict is always better.
Advanced settings and when to test them
The advanced choices expose individual parts of Prism’s behavior. Change one at a time and keep a record of the original state. If the application becomes slower or less stable, reverse the last change before trying another.

There is no universal list of toggles that fixes every program. An option should correspond to an observed symptom, an application log, or a documented recommendation. Enabling every safeguard at once removes your ability to identify the cause and can make the application unusably slow.

A controlled troubleshooting procedure
1. Define the failure
Record exactly what fails: launch, sign-in, opening a document, printing, a plug-in, a calculation, or a particular menu. Note the application version, Windows version, whether the program is 32-bit x86 or x64, and whether the failure is consistent. Use the same test task after every change.
2. Eliminate update and architecture causes
Install pending Windows updates and the newest application release. Confirm whether an Arm64 build exists. If one does, test it before altering Prism. If the application installs a driver or other kernel component, verify that the component supports Arm64; Prism cannot emulate it.
3. Capture the baseline
Open the executable’s Properties and write down the current Windows on Arm profile and every advanced option. Run the failing task at Default so you know the unmodified result. Keep the baseline notes with the application’s version information.

4. Test the least disruptive change
Choose Safe before Strict, and Strict before Very strict, unless a vendor has identified a specific advanced control. Apply the setting, close and reopen the application, and repeat the same task. Do not change multiple checkboxes between tests.
5. Match an advanced control to evidence
For an instruction-set error, investigate CPU-feature visibility. For a stale-code suspicion after an update, test the application-cache option. For a multithreaded timing problem, test stricter synchronization or single-core operation. For numerical discrepancies, investigate floating-point optimization. For self-generated code, test strict self-modifying-code support. These are targeted experiments, not guarantees.
6. Measure the cost
Compatibility is not the only result to check. Time the same operation, watch for increased memory use, and check whether the application remains responsive during ordinary work. A setting that avoids one crash but makes daily use impractical is not a successful long-term configuration.

7. Restore and escalate when necessary
If a change introduces a crash, launch failure, or unacceptable slowdown, return to the recorded setting immediately. If Default and the plausible targeted options all fail, provide the application publisher with the application version, Windows build, Snapdragon X model, exact symptom, and the settings you tested. This is more useful than reporting only that the program does not work.

Windows 11 Arm supports many applications either natively or through emulation. The architecture label alone does not predict success: an apparently ordinary desktop program may depend on a driver, plug-in, or helper process that has a separate architecture requirement.
Windows 11 version and Snapdragon X considerations
Windows 11 version 24H2 includes Prism. Microsoft notes that some Prism performance features require Snapdragon X series hardware, while Prism is available on supported Windows 11 Arm devices more broadly. Therefore, the presence of the settings does not imply identical speed or identical application results across every Arm PC.
Use the version shown in Settings > System > About when reporting a problem. The newer CPU-feature control specifically applies to Windows 11 24H2 and later. A setting visible on one Windows build may not appear with exactly the same label on an earlier build.
Common mistakes to avoid
- Changing the wrong file: editing a shortcut, updater, or launcher will not necessarily change the executable that fails.
- Starting at Very strict: the most restrictive profile can cost performance and may itself prevent launch.
- Changing several options together: you will not know which setting helped or caused the regression.
- Blaming Prism for a driver failure: kernel-mode components must be Arm64 and are outside user-mode emulation.
- Ignoring a native build: an Arm64 release is normally a better long-term solution than maintaining compatibility workarounds.
- Leaving a temporary workaround undocumented: record the profile and toggles so an update or support technician can reproduce the configuration.
Decision rule
Use the native Arm64 build when the publisher provides one. Otherwise, keep Prism at Default unless you can reproduce a specific compatibility problem. Move through Safe, Strict, and Very strict cautiously, or test one advanced control that matches the symptom. Retain the original settings, verify both compatibility and performance, and restore the baseline whenever a workaround makes the application less stable.
