There is no universal list of Windows apps that always use the most RAM. Memory use changes with your open programs, browser tabs, files, workload, Windows version and hardware. The reliable way to find the current leaders is Task Manager: inspect the Memory column, then change only settings for apps you recognize and do not need running. Disabling a startup entry delays its launch until you open it; denying background activity can stop notifications, synchronization and updates. Avoid blanket service changes, and consider a RAM upgrade only after you confirm a persistent memory shortage and verify that your exact computer supports compatible memory.
What “using the most RAM” actually means
RAM is the computer’s short-term working space. Windows and every active program share it, and the amount each process uses can rise or fall from minute to minute. A browser with many tabs, a photo editor working on a large image, a game loading a level or a video call can all become the largest memory user on the same PC at different times.
Windows also uses RAM for caching and system operations. A high percentage in the Performance view is not automatically a fault; the important signs are sustained pressure, slow switching between programs, heavy paging to disk and warnings that applications are running out of memory. A process that is large at one moment may be doing legitimate work, so close or disable it only when you understand what it is.
Startup impact labels are a separate measurement. Task Manager’s Low, Medium and High labels describe CPU and disk activity measured while Windows starts. They are not a ranking of an app’s total RAM consumption during normal use.

How to see which processes are using RAM right now
Use the built-in monitor before changing anything. The result describes your PC and workload at that moment, not every Windows installation.
- Press Ctrl+Shift+Esc to open Task Manager. If the compact view appears, select More details.
- On Processes, locate the Memory column. Select its heading to sort from highest to lowest; select it again to reverse the order.
- Note the process name, the app group it belongs to and whether you recognize the work it is doing. Expand a grouped app to see individual windows or components.
- Open Performance > Memory to view total installed RAM, current use, available memory and whether the system is relying heavily on compressed memory or paging.
- Recheck after closing an unused program or tab. If memory pressure falls and stays low, the immediate problem was workload rather than a permanent Windows setting.
Do not end an unfamiliar system process merely because it is near the top of the list. Ending a process can close unsaved work, interrupt security protection or destabilize Windows. Search the exact process name in your PC’s documentation or the software publisher’s support material before taking action.
Startup apps: the safest place to reduce automatic load
Startup controls decide what launches when you sign in. They do not uninstall an app and normally do not prevent you from opening it later. The practical benefit is a shorter or lighter sign-in, fewer resident programs and, in some cases, less memory occupied before you begin work.

Windows 11 paths
- Open Task Manager with Ctrl+Shift+Esc, then select Startup apps.
- Alternatively, open Settings > Apps > Startup.
- Review each entry’s name, publisher and status. Use the impact label as a clue about startup CPU and disk work, not as a RAM measurement.
- Select Disable only for an app you recognize and do not need immediately after sign-in.
- Restart and confirm that essential functions still work. To undo the change, return to the same list and choose Enable.
Good candidates and poor candidates
| Candidate | Why disabling startup may be reasonable | What you give up |
|---|---|---|
| A chat, game or creative app you open only occasionally | It will not sit ready before you need it. | You must launch it manually, and its first start may take longer. |
| A device utility you do not use | It avoids loading an unused companion process. | Hotkeys, status panels or special device features may not appear until the utility is started. |
| Cloud synchronization you depend on immediately | Little reason to disable it if current files must sync after sign-in. | Files may not synchronize until you launch the client. |
| Security software or a hardware driver component | Usually not a safe routine target. | Protection, network access or device controls could be reduced. |
When the name or publisher is unclear, leave it enabled until you can identify it. Startup changes are reversible, so change one or two entries at a time and observe the result instead of disabling an entire category.
Background activity: reducing inactive apps without uninstalling them
Background permissions apply to supported Windows 11 apps and govern what an app can do while you are not actively using its window. Background work can deliver notifications, synchronize content and install or fetch updates. Restricting it may reduce memory or power use, but it can also make the app appear silent until opened.
Change an app’s permission
- Open Settings > System > Power & battery > Battery usage.
- Find the app and open its Manage background activity option, when that option is available.
- Choose the least restrictive setting that meets your needs. Power optimized is Microsoft’s recommended default.
- Use Never only when you accept that the app will not operate in the background and will not provide background notifications or updates.
- Test the app after changing it. If alerts or synchronization stop, return to the same screen and select a less restrictive option.
Settings availability differs by app type and Windows edition. Some desktop programs manage their own background behavior and will not show this control. Microsoft also notes that a device that must remain connected for app updates needs at least one app set to Always; do not set every app to Never if continuous connectivity is required.

What you should not disable as routine “RAM cleanup”
Windows services support networking, printing, updates, security, sign-in and hardware. Disabling a service because its name looks unfamiliar can remove functionality or create a harder-to-diagnose failure. There is no safe universal list of services to turn off for every PC.

A clean boot temporarily starts Windows with a limited set of drivers and startup programs. It can remove functionality while testing, and careless changes in System Configuration can make a computer unusable.
If a clean boot is genuinely needed
- Record the original startup and service settings before changing them.
- Follow a documented clean-boot procedure and change only the items required for the test.
- Restart and reproduce the problem to identify whether a third-party component is involved.
- Restore normal startup after diagnosis, then re-enable items in groups to find the conflict.
This approach isolates a cause; it is not a recommendation to leave Windows permanently stripped of services.

Check other causes before blaming RAM
A slow PC can have several bottlenecks at once. Microsoft identifies limited storage, outdated software, malware, visual effects, many open apps or browser tabs and hardware that no longer meets modern needs as possible contributors.
- Close unused work: quit programs and browser tabs you are not using, then watch Task Manager again.
- Update Windows and applications: fixes can address leaks, compatibility problems and inefficient behavior.
- Check Windows Security: run an appropriate malware scan if unexplained CPU, disk or memory activity persists.
- Inspect storage: very little free space can make general performance worse even when RAM is adequate.
- Separate bottlenecks: Task Manager’s CPU, Disk, Network and Memory columns show which resource is actually saturated.
If the same workload repeatedly produces high memory use after these checks, software changes may offer only a small improvement. Older hardware may simply lack the capacity for current applications.
When adding RAM makes more sense than disabling apps
More RAM gives Windows room for simultaneous programs, larger files and more browser tabs. It does not automatically make every task faster, and it cannot fix a slow processor, failing storage drive or malware.
| Microsoft guidance | How to interpret it |
|---|---|
| At least 4 GB for basic browsing, documents or streaming | A basic starting point, not a promise of smooth multitasking. |
| 8 GB for longer-term general use | More practical headroom for several ordinary applications. |
| 16 GB or more for editing or high-performance workloads | Appropriate to consider when your software and files routinely demand more memory. |
| 4 GB minimum listed for Windows 11 | A system requirement, not a recommendation for demanding work. |
These figures are Microsoft support guidance, not a benchmark or guarantee. Before buying anything, check the exact computer model’s manufacturer specifications: maximum supported capacity, memory type, number of slots, whether memory is soldered and any module-matching requirements. A generic kit may not fit or may not operate at its rated capability in every PC. If the memory is soldered or the device has no accessible slot, software changes or replacement hardware may be the only options.
A low-risk decision process
- Measure: use Task Manager while the slowdown is occurring and note the top memory users and other saturated resources.
- Validate: close a recognized, nonessential app and confirm that memory pressure changes. Do not infer a universal ranking from one snapshot.
- Trim startup: disable one recognized app you do not need at sign-in; restart and test.
- Trim background work: use Power optimized first. Choose Never only when lost notifications, syncing and updates are acceptable.
- Repair the environment: update Windows, check storage and run Windows Security if symptoms remain.
- Escalate carefully: use a documented clean boot only to isolate a conflict, restoring normal startup afterward.
- Plan hardware: if memory pressure is persistent under your normal workload, verify upgrade compatibility for the exact PC before purchasing RAM.
Quick comparison of the available changes
| Change | Likely benefit | Risk and lost functionality | Reversible? |
|---|---|---|---|
| Disable a recognized startup app | Less automatic work and potentially less resident memory after sign-in. | The app is not ready until launched manually. | Yes, in Startup apps. |
| Set background activity to Power optimized | Balances battery and background work. | Some background work may be deferred. | Yes, when the app exposes the setting. |
| Set background activity to Never | Stops that supported app from operating while inactive. | No background notifications or updates from that app. | Yes. |
| Disable Windows services broadly | Unclear for ordinary users. | Can remove essential functionality or destabilize Windows. | Not safely without records and troubleshooting knowledge. |
| Add compatible RAM | More capacity for simultaneous work. | Cost, installation limits and compatibility constraints. | Hardware-dependent. |
Bottom line
Use Task Manager to identify what is consuming memory on your PC now, rather than trusting a universal list. Disable only recognized, nonessential startup apps; treat background permissions as a trade-off between resource use and notifications or updates; and leave Windows services alone unless you are following a controlled troubleshooting procedure. If high memory use continues during your normal workload, verify the exact computer’s upgrade limits and consider additional RAM instead of repeatedly disabling software.
