Power mode has the most direct effect on how a Windows laptop performs when it is unplugged. In Windows 11, open Settings > System > Power & battery and set Power mode for On battery. Best performance favors responsiveness but uses more energy, drains the battery faster and may make the laptop warmer. Balanced and Best power efficiency trade some responsiveness for longer runtime.
Energy saver, graphics selection, display brightness, refresh rate, sleep timers and background activity also change battery behavior, but they do different jobs. Most reduce power consumption rather than making an active application run faster.
Start with Power mode
Power mode is the Windows control that most directly changes the performance-versus-runtime balance on battery. The available choices depend on the laptop and its manufacturer, so a particular PC may not show every option.

- Select System, then Power & battery.
- Expand Power mode.
- Under On battery, choose the mode you want.

Microsoft does not publish a universal percentage improvement for Best performance. The result depends on the workload, processor, graphics hardware, cooling system, firmware and the manufacturer’s power and thermal controls. A setting that helps a compilation or export may make little difference to email or a document editor.

How Energy saver changes battery performance
Energy saver is a separate battery-conservation feature. In Windows 11 version 24H2 and later, Microsoft describes it as replacing the older Battery saver name. It reduces power through Windows and app behavior, including background activity. That can limit performance or change some features while it is active.
When to use it
- Turn it on when preserving the remaining battery charge matters more than maximum speed.
- Leave it off during a short, demanding task if you need every available response and can recharge soon.
- Check whether it activated automatically when the laptop reached a low-battery threshold; an unexpected slowdown may be the result.
Energy saver and Power mode can point in different directions. For example, Best performance requests a performance-oriented balance, while Energy saver applies battery-saving behavior. If an application suddenly feels sluggish, inspect both controls rather than changing only one.
Per-app graphics preference can matter more than the global mode
Windows can assign a graphics preference to an individual application. A graphics-intensive app may be set to a power-saving graphics option, which favors battery life at the cost of graphics performance. The exact result depends on the application, graphics adapters and the laptop’s firmware.
Check an application’s graphics setting
- Open Settings > System > Display > Graphics.
- Find the application in the list. If it is missing, use the option to add a desktop or Microsoft Store app.
- Select the app and open Options.
- Review the available graphics preference, then choose the performance-oriented or power-saving option as appropriate.
- Select Save, close and reopen the app, and test the workload again.
Use the power-saving choice for light graphics work or when runtime is the priority. For 3D work, video effects or other graphics-heavy tasks, a performance-oriented choice may be necessary. Windows may show different labels or options on different hardware.

Display settings are major battery controls
The screen is often one of the largest active power loads. Microsoft’s technical guidance says the display can account for up to 40 percent of overall system power consumption, and identifies reducing brightness as the most effective way to reduce power while the display is in use. That figure is a stated upper share, not a guaranteed percentage for every laptop.
Brightness
Lower brightness reduces battery use immediately while the display remains on. Use the brightness slider in Windows Quick Settings or in Settings > System > Display. Lowering brightness does not make the processor or an application faster; it simply leaves more of the battery available for the rest of the system.
Refresh rate
A lower refresh rate can reduce display power. Open Settings > System > Display > Advanced display, select the built-in panel and choose a lower available refresh rate when smooth high-refresh motion is not needed. The choices depend on the panel and graphics hardware. A lower rate may be suitable for reading, writing and static office work, while a higher rate can be preferable for gaming or motion-sensitive work.
Screen-off and sleep timers save idle power
On-battery screen-off and sleep timeouts reduce consumption when you stop using the laptop. They do not make an active workload run faster. A shorter screen-off timer is useful in meetings or when you frequently walk away; a longer timer avoids interruptions during presentations or long downloads.

Set separate battery timeouts
- Go to Settings > System > Power & battery.
- Open Screen and sleep.
- Set the On battery power, turn my screen off after value.
- Set the On battery power, put my device to sleep after value.
Choose a timeout that protects runtime without interrupting work. Sleep may pause or reduce activity in applications, so check the behavior of any task that must continue while you are away.
Background activity can make a laptop feel slow or drain its battery
An application that continues running in the background can consume battery even when its window is closed. Windows’ battery-use view can identify applications responsible for background consumption, where the system reports it. Restricting background permissions, when the option is available, can reduce that drain.
Find the source
- Open Settings > System > Power & battery.
- Review Battery usage and the per-app entries.
- Look for an app with unusually high background use.
- Open the app’s settings where Windows provides a background-permission control, and restrict background activity if you do not need notifications or synchronization.
Do not restrict an app blindly. Messaging, mail, backup and security software may need background access. The trade-off is fewer background processes versus delayed notifications or synchronization.

This distinction prevents a common mistake: lowering brightness or shortening the sleep timer cannot make a running export, game or code build faster. Those controls save energy around the workload. Power mode and, for graphics-heavy software, the per-app graphics choice are the controls most likely to affect active responsiveness.

A practical setup for common situations
Everyday unplugged work
Use Balanced as a starting point. Keep Energy saver off unless you need additional runtime, use comfortable but not excessive brightness, and allow the screen to turn off after a reasonable idle period. Check Battery usage if the charge is disappearing faster than expected.
Maximum runtime during travel
Choose Best power efficiency, enable Energy saver when appropriate, lower brightness and select a lower refresh rate if the panel offers one. Restrict unnecessary background activity and use shorter screen-off and sleep timers. These changes address different sources of consumption, so combining them is more effective than changing only one.
A short demanding task
Set Best performance under On battery. For a graphics-heavy application, review its graphics preference as well. Expect faster battery drain and potentially higher temperature; Microsoft specifically warns that Best performance may make a laptop run warmer. If the task is long, connect the charger when possible rather than relying on the battery setting alone.
Gaming or creative work
Check both the global Power mode and the application’s graphics preference. A power-saving graphics selection can undermine the result you expect from Best performance. Because manufacturers control thermal and GPU behavior, identical Windows settings can behave differently on two laptops.

Why Power mode may be unavailable
If Windows will not let you change Power mode, a custom power plan may be selected. Microsoft recommends switching to Balanced in Control Panel > System and Security > Power Options, then returning to the Settings page.
Power-mode choices are not present on every PC. Hardware design, firmware and manufacturer software can limit the available modes or alter their behavior. If the option is missing after selecting Balanced, check the laptop maker’s power-management utility and firmware documentation, while remembering that those controls may override or supplement Windows settings.
Windows version and support considerations
These instructions describe the current Windows 11 path. Windows 11 version 24H2 and later use the Energy saver terminology described by Microsoft. Labels and available choices can change with updates or hardware.

For a supported Windows installation, use the Windows 11 Settings path when it exists and treat manufacturer-specific behavior as a separate layer.
Troubleshooting an unexpected slowdown on battery
- Check Power mode: Open Settings > System > Power & battery and confirm the On battery selection.
- Check Energy saver: See whether it is active and temporarily turn it off if maximum responsiveness is required.
- Check graphics preference: In Settings > System > Display > Graphics, verify that a demanding app is not assigned a power-saving graphics option.
- Check heat: Best performance can make a laptop warmer. If heat rises, the manufacturer’s thermal controls may reduce speed to protect the device; improve ventilation and retest.
- Check background use: Review Battery usage for an app consuming power or processing time in the background.
- Check the power plan: If Power mode is locked, select Balanced in Control Panel’s Power Options.
- Compare the same task: Test the identical file or workload on battery and AC power. Do not infer a universal speed increase from one application.
There is no single Windows percentage that predicts how much Best performance will help. Workload, cooling, hardware and manufacturer controls determine the result, so use the mode that matches the task rather than assuming the highest setting is always faster.
