If “doesn’t get in my way” means blocking unapproved apps without constant connection prompts, TinyWall is the closest match among these options. Its project describes a quiet allow-list approach, but also says TinyWall is in maintenance mode. If you do not need another app, Microsoft Defender Firewall is the built-in starting point; choose simplewall for Windows Filtering Platform rules and logs, or GlassWire if you want alerts and network visibility.
Start with the firewall already in Windows
Microsoft Defender Firewall is built into Windows 10 and Windows 11. In Windows Security, open Firewall & network protection to check the firewall, view the active network profile, allow an app through the firewall, or open advanced settings. Microsoft also provides a way to restore firewall defaults. See Microsoft’s Windows Security firewall guide.
The important distinction is outbound behavior: Windows Firewall allows outbound traffic by default unless a matching rule blocks it. It can block outbound connections, but setting up detailed outbound rules takes more manual work than simply responding to a new-connection prompt. Microsoft documents outbound program and service rules in its firewall rules guidance.

For a reader who wants basic protection and few interruptions, the built-in firewall may be enough. If you change advanced rules, do so carefully: Microsoft warns that incorrect rules can make a PC more vulnerable or interfere with app connectivity.

How the four options differ
| Option | How it handles control | Best fit | Main trade-off |
|---|---|---|---|
| Microsoft Defender Firewall | Built into Windows Security, with network profiles, app exceptions, notifications, advanced rules, and restore-defaults controls. Outbound traffic is allowed by default unless a rule blocks it. | People who want built-in firewall controls without adding another app. | Fine-grained outbound blocking requires manual rule setup. |
| TinyWall | Project materials describe quiet allow-list blocking for apps that have not been explicitly allowed, without nagging connection popups. Its version 3 announcement also describes Windows Store app handling. | People who prefer a quiet allow-list workflow. | The project repository describes TinyWall as being in maintenance mode. |
| simplewall | A Windows Filtering Platform (WFP) tool with rules and logs for allowed and dropped packets; its documentation describes a no-popup interface. | People comfortable working with filtering rules and packet logs. | It is a separate WFP tool, not a control panel for Windows Firewall; its README says administrator rights are required for correct operation. |
| GlassWire | Provides network monitoring, app-access alerts, firewall profiles, and an Ask-to-connect option. Its guide describes click-to-block, ask-to-connect, and block-all modes. | People who want to see and respond to app network activity. | Alerts can be more interruptive than a quiet allow-list workflow, though the guide documents notification controls and snoozing. |
When TinyWall is the better fit
TinyWall is the most direct match if your priority is keeping prompts out of the way while allowing only apps you approve. The project’s version 3 announcement says: “The user interface is simple, focused and absent of nagging connection popups, which is considered a serious security feature.” That describes the interaction model—not a guarantee that every app will work without adjustment. You may need to explicitly allow an app you trust.
There is a meaningful maintenance caveat: TinyWall’s repository says the project is in maintenance mode. That does not establish that it is abandoned, but it is relevant if active development is a deciding factor. Check the project’s current compatibility and release information before installing it: TinyWall’s project repository.

Choose simplewall for WFP rules, not a Defender front end
simplewall uses Windows Filtering Platform rather than controlling the Windows Firewall. Its documentation lists filtering rules, packet logging for allowed and dropped traffic, and an interface without connection popups. It supports Windows 7 SP1 and later according to its README, and administrator rights are required for correct operation.
This makes simplewall a better fit for someone who wants more visibility into filtering decisions and is comfortable with rules and logs. Do not treat it as merely a different screen for Defender Firewall: it is a separate WFP tool. Read its setup and operating notes in the simplewall README.

Choose GlassWire if visibility matters more than silence
GlassWire emphasizes monitoring and alerts. Its product materials describe notifications when apps access the network and an Ask-to-connect option; its guide also explains click-to-block and block-all modes. That can make unfamiliar activity easier to notice, but it can also mean more interruptions than TinyWall’s quiet approach. GlassWire documents notification controls and snoozing for readers who want to reduce alerts.
GlassWire controls Windows Firewall; its guide says it does not turn the Windows Firewall service off or enable or disable it at the system level. See the GlassWire product information and GlassWire user guide.

Which one should you choose?
- Choose Microsoft Defender Firewall if you want built-in controls and are willing to create manual rules when needed.
- Choose TinyWall if quiet allow-list control is your priority and its maintenance-mode status is acceptable to you.
- Choose simplewall if you want WFP-based rules and packet logs and are comfortable managing a separate filtering tool with administrator rights.
- Choose GlassWire if seeing app activity and receiving alerts matters more than minimizing notifications.
Before switching tools, decide what “quiet” means for you: no prompts, fewer alerts, or less rule maintenance. Those are different needs, and the options make different trade-offs.
