Most ordinary Windows software works on a Snapdragon laptop running Windows 11. Windows can run apps compiled for Arm64 directly and many unmodified x86 and x64 applications through its built-in Prism emulation. Native Arm64 versions usually provide the best speed, responsiveness and battery life.
Compatibility is not universal. A required kernel driver, print driver, shell extension, graphics API or game anti-cheat component must support Arm64; emulation cannot translate those low-level components. Games therefore need title-by-title checking, even when the rest of the laptop runs Windows software normally.
How Windows on Arm runs applications
Native Arm64 applications
An Arm64 application is compiled for the processor architecture used by Snapdragon laptops. It does not need instruction translation, so it normally starts faster, responds more consistently and uses less battery than an equivalent emulated build. Microsoft identifies native Arm builds as the preferred choice when they are available.

Native support still depends on the complete product, not just its main executable. Plug-ins, add-ins, codecs, device utilities and other bundled components may have separate architecture requirements. Confirm that the vendor’s current Arm64 package includes the features and extensions you need.

x86 and x64 applications through Prism
Windows 11 can run many existing 32-bit x86 and 64-bit x64 desktop programs without a recompiled version. In Windows 11 24H2, Prism is the built-in emulator tuned for Snapdragon hardware. It translates blocks of x86 or x64 instructions into Arm64 instructions while the program runs and caches translated code for later use. You do not install a separate emulator.
Windows 10 on Arm supports x86 emulation but not x64 emulation. If you depend on a 64-bit-only application, Windows 11 is therefore the relevant platform to verify.
Windows 11 24H2 and later Prism releases add emulated CPU features such as AVX and AVX2. Some applications and games require those instructions. Windows also exposes app-specific compatibility controls that can hide newer CPU features or alter synchronization behavior when a particular program misbehaves. More restrictive settings can lower performance or prevent the program from starting, so change them only for the affected app and keep a known-good setting documented.

The hard boundary: drivers
Emulation handles user-mode application code only. It does not translate kernel-mode drivers, user-mode device drivers or print drivers. Microsoft states: “Emulation only supports user mode code and doesn’t support drivers. Any kernel mode components must be compiled as Arm64.”
This is why a seemingly ordinary application can fail on a Snapdragon laptop. A scanner utility, security product, audio interface, printer package, VPN component or hardware monitor may install a driver alongside its graphical interface. The interface might open under emulation while the device or protected feature remains unavailable. The required driver must come from the manufacturer as an Arm64 build.
Windows applications that generally work
Microsoft lists current native Arm experiences including Microsoft 365 applications such as Teams, PowerPoint, Outlook, Word, Excel, OneDrive and OneNote. Other examples include Chrome, Spotify, Zoom, WhatsApp, Blender, Affinity Suite and DaVinci Resolve. These examples show the breadth of the platform; they are not a blanket guarantee for every edition, plug-in, workflow or peripheral.

For any named product, use the vendor’s current download page and support statement rather than assuming that an older installer has the same behavior. A native executable can still rely on an incompatible plug-in, and an emulated executable can still work well if all of its dependencies are user-mode.
Why an otherwise compatible app can fail
Drivers and hardware integration
Drivers are the most important exception to the broad emulation story. Kernel drivers, user-mode device drivers and printer drivers must be compiled for Arm64. If the vendor provides only x86 or x64 drivers, Windows cannot emulate them. The result may be a failed installation, a device that appears but cannot be used, or a program with missing hardware features.
Shell extensions and injected components
Some software loads DLLs into Windows processes instead of operating as a self-contained application. Explorer extensions, assistive technologies, security tools and other injected components may need Arm64 versions. An application can therefore launch while a context-menu command, overlay or accessibility feature does not.
Graphics APIs
Microsoft’s troubleshooting guidance says x86 applications using DirectX 9, 10, 11 or 12 work on Arm. Applications that require OpenGL later than version 1.1, or hardware-accelerated OpenGL paths, may not work as expected. Check the application’s own graphics requirements and whether it offers a DirectX rendering mode before treating a launch failure as a general Windows-on-Arm limitation.
Unusual CPU and code-generation assumptions
Microsoft documents possible problems for software that prohibits dynamic code generation or assumes an emulated x86 process is running on an x64 host. These cases are less visible than a missing driver: the program may install but fail during a specific operation. A vendor update that removes the assumption, or an Arm64 build, is the durable fix.
Performance and battery overhead
An emulated productivity application may be perfectly usable, while long renders, large spreadsheets, compilation, data analysis or other compute-heavy work exposes translation overhead. Graphics-heavy applications also depend on the laptop’s graphics performance, not only on whether the program launches. Prefer the native build for sustained workloads and battery-sensitive use.

Games: launching is not the same as being playable
A game has more compatibility layers than a typical desktop utility: the game executable, launcher, graphics API, redistributables, controller software, online services and anti-cheat system all have to cooperate. CPU emulation can get the main executable past installation and still leave the title unable to start a match.
Graphics requirements
DirectX 9 through 12 support gives many x86 games a workable graphics path on Windows on Arm. Titles that require later OpenGL versions or hardware-accelerated OpenGL can encounter rendering or launch problems. Meeting a game’s nominal graphics requirement also does not establish a particular frame rate on every Snapdragon laptop; device performance and driver versions differ.
Anti-cheat and protected drivers
Anti-cheat support is decided at the individual game and service level. If an anti-cheat component uses a kernel driver without an Arm64 version, emulation cannot make it work. Support for one game using a particular anti-cheat technology does not prove that every other game using the same technology is supported.
Qualcomm announced Fortnite support on Snapdragon X Series with Easy Anti-Cheat and described work with providers including Tencent ACE, Roblox Hyperion, Denuvo, InProtect GameGuard, BattlEye and Uncheater. That announcement indicates that support is expanding; it is not a complete compatibility list. Check the exact title and current game build.

For Xbox PC app and Game Pass titles, inspect the current listing for the individual game and whether local installation on Arm Windows is supported. Do not infer today’s result from the 85% figure alone.
How to check one app or game before buying or deploying it
- Find the architecture. Look for an official Arm64 or “Windows on Arm” build. If none exists, confirm that the publisher supports the x86 or x64 desktop release on Windows 11.
- List every dependency. Check for device drivers, print support, shell extensions, plug-ins, launchers, codecs, protected services and anti-cheat. The dependency, rather than the main executable, is often the blocker.
- Check graphics requirements. Confirm whether the program uses DirectX or an OpenGL version that Microsoft identifies as problematic on Arm. For games, compare the laptop’s graphics capability with the publisher’s requirements.
- Search a current compatibility catalog. Microsoft recommends the evolving WorksOnWoA catalog as a third-party open-source resource. Treat its entry as a starting point and read notes about versions, drivers and known issues.
- Verify the exact Windows and driver versions. Prism behavior changed with Windows 11 24H2, and game compatibility can change after Windows, graphics-driver, launcher or title updates.
- Test the real workflow. Install the plug-ins, connect the required hardware, sign in to the launcher and perform the task you actually need. A successful installer or splash screen is not proof that printing, rendering, multiplayer or hardware acceleration works.

Practical troubleshooting branches
The installer refuses to run
Look for a newer Arm64 installer first. If the publisher supplies only x86 or x64, confirm that you are on Windows 11 rather than Windows 10 on Arm when an x64 package is required. If the installer includes a driver, emulation will not solve the problem; obtain an Arm64 driver or use hardware supported by the vendor.

The app opens but a feature is missing
Identify the feature’s dependency. Printing, scanning, audio interfaces, overlays, Explorer commands and hardware acceleration commonly rely on components outside the main executable. Check for an Arm64 driver, shell extension or plug-in update instead of repeatedly reinstalling the emulated application.
A game launches and then closes or rejects online play
Check the game’s anti-cheat and launcher requirements with the publisher. A protected driver may be unsupported even when the game itself is emulatable. Also verify the graphics API, game version and Windows build; an update can change compatibility independently of the laptop model.
The program works but is too slow or drains the battery
Prefer the native Arm64 build if one exists and remove unnecessary plug-ins that force emulated components. For a game or renderer, compare results on the laptop’s actual graphics hardware rather than relying on whether the title starts. App-specific Prism compatibility settings can sometimes address a launch problem, but stricter settings may reduce performance.
An update breaks a previously working setup
Record the Windows build, graphics-driver date, application version and launcher version whenever you validate a critical workload. Recheck the publisher’s support notes and WorksOnWoA after updates, because compatibility catalogs and anti-cheat integrations change over time.
What Snapdragon laptop buyers should take away
For office work, browsing, communication and many creative applications, Windows 11 on Snapdragon is no longer limited to a small Arm-only software library. Native Arm64 versions are increasingly common, and Prism covers a large amount of existing x86 and x64 software.

The risk is concentrated in dependencies: drivers, protected services, shell integrations, specialized graphics paths and game anti-cheat. Evaluate those components before purchase or deployment, and check the exact game or application on the current Windows build. That approach is more reliable than treating a percentage, a processor name or a successful launch as a universal compatibility guarantee.
