The right Wi-Fi router for Xfinity cable depends on what equipment you already have: a standalone router works with a compatible cable modem, while a modem-router gateway combines both. A router alone does not connect to coaxial cable. Before choosing equipment, check compatibility and speed support for your address and service through Xfinity’s device checker.
First, decide which equipment you need
On a coaxial Xfinity connection, a cable modem connects your home to the internet service. A router creates the local network and provides Wi-Fi and wired connections. A gateway combines modem and router functions in one device.
- Already have a compatible modem? A standalone Wi-Fi router may be all you need.
- Buying equipment for a coaxial connection? Choose a compatible modem-router gateway, or buy a compatible cable modem and a separate router.
- Already using an Xfinity gateway? You can keep using it, or add a personal router and configure the gateway for that arrangement.
Xfinity permits customer-owned equipment, but compatibility and speed support depend on the service and device. Use My Device Info with your address or account before buying; a general or older equipment list may not reflect your specific service.
How to choose a router for your Xfinity setup
There is no single router that is best for every Xfinity customer. Match the device to your service tier, existing modem, home layout, connected devices, and need for wired ports. Check the router’s WAN and LAN port capabilities as well as its wireless features: a fast Wi-Fi rating cannot compensate for a port that limits the connection.

Check the connection and speed tier
Confirm that your existing modem is approved for your Xfinity service and supports your subscribed speed. If you are buying a gateway or modem too, check that device separately in Xfinity’s compatibility checker. The router is only one part of the connection.
Plan for the home and its devices
Consider where people use Wi-Fi, how many devices connect, and whether you need Ethernet connections for computers, TVs, or other equipment. Walls, distance, older client devices, and nearby Wi-Fi networks can reduce real-world performance. A router’s advertised capabilities do not guarantee a particular speed throughout the home.

Choose between Xfinity equipment and managing your own
Xfinity-provided gateways come with provider support and Xfinity-specific features. With customer-owned equipment, you take responsibility for setup, updates, security, and troubleshooting. Weigh those responsibilities against the flexibility to select and manage your own equipment.

If you keep the Xfinity gateway and connect a personal router behind it, enable Bridge Mode on the gateway so the personal router handles routing. Follow Xfinity’s Bridge Mode instructions. Xfinity says only one device can connect to the gateway while Bridge Mode is enabled. Some Xfinity app network-management and extender features are unavailable in this mode.

- Compatible with major cable internet providers including Xfinity and Cox. NOT compatible with Verizon, Spectrum, AT&T, CenturyLink, DSL providers, DirecTV, DISH and any bundled voice service. Best for cable provider plans up to 800Mbps.
Set up equipment and improve Wi-Fi coverage
Activate an approved third-party modem
For a customer-owned modem, use Xfinity’s activation instructions and app flow. Xfinity estimates activation takes about 20 minutes; that is an estimate, not a guaranteed completion time.
Place the router or gateway well
Xfinity recommends placing the device in a central location on the main floor, upright, and at least two feet above the floor. Avoid hiding it in a cabinet or placing it at the far edge of the area where you need coverage.

- 16x4 DOCSIS 3.0 cable modem plus a built-in AC1900 Dual Band (2.4 GHz and 5 GHz) WiFi Gigabit Router with four Gigabit (GigE) Ethernet ports, a firewall DFS, Power Boost, and more. This product is recommended for actual cable Internet service speeds up to 375 Mbps. A Broadcom cable modem chipset provides security from Denial of Service attacks. WiFi performance is exceptionally good, even in multi-dwelling units with lots of WiFi noise from neighbors. DFS and Power Boost are key
- Requires cable Internet service. Approved by and for use with Comcast Xfinity and Xfinity X1, Cox, Charter, Time Warner Cable, Suddenlink, WOW., CableOne and other cable service providers. Eliminate cable modem rental fees up to 156 dollars per year. (Savings are shown for Xfinity and vary by cable service provider. No cable modem is compatible with fiber optic, DSL, or satellite services from Verizon, AT&T, CenturyLink, Frontier, and others. Model MG7550 has no phone jack.)
- Built-in high-speed Wi-Fi router with AC1900 Wi-Fi, and Power Boost, and DFS provides Internet access for Wi-Fi devices including smartphones, notebooks, tablets, game stations, HDTVs, Amazon Echo, Google Home, Chromecast, Roku, Amazon Fire TV, and AppleTV. Four 10/100/1000 Gigabit Ethernet LAN ports provide wired connections to Windows and Mac computers, HDTVs, game stations, streaming TV devices, and other Ethernet-capable devices.
- Wireless Power Boost adds high-performance WiFi power amplifiers to boost the wireless signals to the legal limit, giving a significant boost in speed and range. The router can work on WiFi DFS frequencies, unlike most routers, so it is much less vulnerable to WiFi interference from neighbors. In addition, AnyBeam beamforming at both 2.4 GHz and 5 GHz frequencies focuses the signal on wireless clients to further enhance performance and range.
- Integrating the cable modem and router creates a reliable connection that reduces unwieldy wiring and power adapter clutter while conserving desk space. The vertical design minimizes shelf space and improves cooling while looking great in any home or office. A two-year warranty plus rugged lightning and power surge circuits protect your investment.
Troubleshoot slow or uneven Wi-Fi
Before replacing a router, check whether the modem and router support your subscribed tier, and whether the affected device can use the connection’s capabilities. Test from a location closer to the router and consider distance, walls, and nearby Wi-Fi networks. A weak result in one room does not by itself establish that the router is faulty.
When the fiber exception applies
Some eligible Xfinity fiber properties use an optical network unit (ONU) rather than a coaxial cable modem. In that setup, a router can connect to the ONU over Ethernet; Xfinity gives a 2.5 GbE-or-faster WAN port as an example for speeds above 1 Gbps. This fiber-specific guidance does not mean a router can replace the modem on a coaxial Xfinity connection.
