Wi-Fi is based on the IEEE 802.11 family of wireless local area network standards. But the available evidence does not establish which individual Wi-Fi generation—such as Wi-Fi 6 or Wi-Fi 7—is used by the most active devices today. A newer standard’s publication date is not proof that it has become the most common.
What does “most used Wi-Fi protocol” mean?
The clearest answer depends on whether “protocol” means the overall technology family or a particular generation. Wi-Fi is the familiar name for technology based on the IEEE 802.11 series. IEEE describes that series as a widely used wireless networking family; it is not one single protocol or generation. IEEE’s overview of Wi-Fi technology explains the relationship.
If you mean the most-used individual generation, the answer is not established by the sources available here. There is no current, comparable worldwide count of active Wi-Fi client devices by generation in the cited material. It would therefore be misleading to call Wi-Fi 6, Wi-Fi 6E, or Wi-Fi 7 the most used.

Wi-Fi generation names make it easier to discuss product capabilities. Formal standards use IEEE 802.11 designations, including amendment identifiers. A generation name and an IEEE standard number are related labels, but neither should be mistaken for a measure of how many devices currently use that technology.
#1 Best Overall
- DUAL-BAND WIFI 6 ROUTER: Wi-Fi 6(802.11ax) technology achieves faster speeds, greater capacity and reduced network congestion compared to the previous gen. All WiFi routers require a separate modem. Dual-Band WiFi routers do not support the 6 GHz band.
- AX1800: Enjoy smoother and more stable streaming, gaming, downloading with 1.8 Gbps total bandwidth (up to 1200 Mbps on 5 GHz and up to 574 Mbps on 2.4 GHz). Performance varies by conditions, distance to devices, and obstacles such as walls.
- CONNECT MORE DEVICES: Wi-Fi 6 technology communicates more data to more devices simultaneously using revolutionary OFDMA technology
- EXTENSIVE COVERAGE: Achieve the strong, reliable WiFi coverage with Archer AX1800 as it focuses signal strength to your devices far away using Beamforming technology, 4 high-gain antennas and an advanced front-end module (FEM) chipset
- OUR CYBERSECURITY COMMITMENT: TP-Link is a signatory of the U.S. Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Security Agency’s (CISA) Secure-by-Design pledge. This device is designed, built, and maintained, with advanced security as a core requirement.
| Term | What it identifies | What it does not establish |
|---|---|---|
| Wi-Fi | The wireless networking technology based on the IEEE 802.11 series. | Which individual generation has the most active devices. |
| IEEE 802.11-2024 | IEEE’s active consolidated wireless LAN MAC and PHY standard, superseding 802.11-2020. | How widely any particular generation is deployed. |
| Wi-Fi 7 / IEEE 802.11be-2024 | A Wi-Fi generation associated with the IEEE 802.11be-2024 standard. | That Wi-Fi 7 is more common than earlier generations. |
IEEE’s standard record describes the 2024 revision as specifying technical corrections and clarifications as well as enhancements to existing medium access control (MAC) and physical layer (PHY) functions. See the IEEE 802.11-2024 record.
What is the latest standard, and does that make it the most common?
IEEE lists IEEE 802.11-2024 as active and says it supersedes IEEE 802.11-2020. The IEEE 802.11 Working Group lists April 28, 2025, as the publication date for 802.11-2024, and July 22, 2025, for IEEE 802.11be-2024, associated with Wi-Fi 7. Check the IEEE 802.11 Working Group listings.

- Dual-band Wi-Fi with 5 GHz speeds up to 867 Mbps and 2.4 GHz speeds up to 300 Mbps, delivering 1200 Mbps of total bandwidth¹. Dual-band routers do not support 6 GHz. Performance varies by conditions, distance to devices, and obstacles such as walls.
- Covers up to 1,000 sq. ft. with four external antennas for stable wireless connections and optimal coverage.
- Supports IGMP Proxy/Snooping, Bridge and Tag VLAN to optimize IPTV streaming
- Access Point Mode - Supports AP Mode to transform your wired connection into wireless network, an ideal wireless router for home
- Advanced Security with WPA3 - The latest Wi-Fi security protocol, WPA3, brings new capabilities to improve cybersecurity in personal networks
Those dates describe standards publications, not device adoption. A standard can be published before it becomes common in routers and client devices. Without a dated dataset that counts active devices on a consistent basis, the publication record cannot answer which generation leads in use.
How Wi-Fi became a widely used technology
IEEE says Wi-Fi first came onto the market in 1997 with the original IEEE 802.11 standard. That early standard supported data transmission of up to 2 Mbit/s over unlicensed 2.4 GHz spectrum, according to IEEE’s history of Wi-Fi technology and standards. Later generations expanded the family, while the 802.11 designation remains the foundation for identifying its standards.

- NIGHTHAWK WIFI 6 ROUTER FOR YOUR WHOLE HOME: Delivers fast, reliable WiFi across every room of your apartment or small home for streaming, gaming, video calls, and smart home devices, all running at the same time without slowing each other down.
- WORKS WITH YOUR EXISTING INTERNET SERVICE: Pairs with your existing modem or gateway via ethernet. Compatible with most cable, fiber, DSL, and satellite providers. Some gateways and modem router combos may require bridge mode. No coax needed.
- SET UP AND MANAGE YOUR NETWORK WITH THE NIGHTHAWK APP: Download the free Nighthawk app on iOS or Android for guided setup. Manage WiFi, run speed tests, pause devices, and set up guest networks from anywhere. Active internet required.
- READY FOR THE DEVICES YOU ALREADY OWN: Your phones, laptops, and TVs work right out of the box. WiFi 6 delivers speeds up to 1.8 Gbps across 2.4 GHz and 5 GHz bands. Backward compatible with WiFi 5 and earlier.
- COVERAGE IN EVERY ROOM: Covers up to 1,500 sq. ft. for up to 20 connected devices. Walls, floors, and interference can reduce range. Larger or multi-story homes may benefit from a NETGEAR Orbi mesh WiFi system.
What determines the Wi-Fi generation you actually use?
A Wi-Fi network’s practical capabilities depend on both the access point or router and the client device connecting to it. A newer router does not make an older phone, laptop, or other client communicate using a generation it does not support. The standard name can help identify a device’s capabilities, but it does not tell you how many people or devices use that generation worldwide.
