In a true bridge or modem-only setup, the ISP gateway stops being the home router. Its NAT and local DHCP service are normally disabled automatically or as part of the bridge procedure, while your separate router supplies routing, address assignment and usually Wi-Fi. Do not disable DHCP or Wi-Fi by guesswork: wireless behavior, menu names and service limitations vary by gateway and ISP.

What you should disable—and what should stay enabled

Bridge mode is a handoff of network duties, not simply a wireless setting. The gateway passes the ISP connection to a downstream router, which becomes the device responsible for the local network. In NETGEAR’s C7100V documentation, disabling NAT changes the modem-router to bridge operation and passes the ISP WAN address to the downstream router. BT Business describes modem-only mode on Smart Hub 2 as disabling NAT, DHCP, DNS and LTE mobile functions.

Gateway function Typical status in ISP bridge/modem-only mode Who should provide the function afterward
NAT Disabled as part of bridge operation on documented models Downstream router
LAN DHCP server Disabled automatically or by the bridge procedure Downstream router or another deliberately configured DHCP server
Routing and firewall Moved out of the gateway’s normal home-router role Downstream router
Wi-Fi radio May switch off, remain configurable, or follow a model-specific rule Downstream router, if it provides wireless access
DNS proxy and related gateway services May be disabled; BT documents this for Smart Hub 2 modem-only mode Downstream router or ISP connection, depending on the design
LTE/mobile backup Disabled in the BT Smart Hub 2 modem-only description Not available through that bridged gateway function

The practical rule is simple: disable or accept the gateway’s automatic shutdown of NAT and DHCP only when another router is ready to take over. Wi-Fi is separate. Turning off the gateway’s wireless radio does not, by itself, disable routing or NAT.

ISP gateway in bridge mode, downstream router in router mode

The gateway handles the ISP-facing modem or termination function. The separate router connects to the gateway’s specified Ethernet port, receives the ISP-side connection and performs NAT, firewalling, LAN DHCP and Wi-Fi. NETGEAR’s own-router instructions document this arrangement, with the gateway Ethernet port connected to the router’s Internet/WAN port.

In this design, leave DHCP enabled on the downstream router. The gateway’s DHCP service should be off if the bridge procedure disables it. Running two DHCP servers on the same LAN can give clients conflicting leases and gateways; disabling DHCP on the only device serving the LAN can leave clients without addresses.

ISP gateway remains the router, downstream device in access-point mode

If bridge mode is unavailable or the ISP will not enable it, NETGEAR documents a different fallback: turn off the gateway’s Wi-Fi and configure the downstream unit as an access point (AP). The ISP gateway continues routing and providing DHCP; the downstream device supplies wireless and wired access without creating a second routing layer.

Do not confuse this with gateway bridge mode. In AP mode, the upstream gateway’s DHCP must remain active, and the downstream device’s routing and DHCP functions are normally disabled by its AP configuration. Exact exceptions are product-specific. Synology’s SRM documentation, for example, calls its wireless AP mode “also called the bridge mode” and notes a guest-network DHCP exception. That terminology does not prove that every ISP gateway uses the same behavior.

Characteristic Gateway bridge + downstream router Gateway router + downstream AP
Routing and NAT Downstream router ISP gateway
LAN DHCP Downstream router; gateway DHCP may be disabled ISP gateway remains the DHCP server
Gateway Wi-Fi Behavior depends on the bridge implementation Turned off in NETGEAR’s documented fallback
Downstream operating mode Router mode Access-point mode
Main reason to choose it Use the separate router’s routing features and avoid gateway NAT Keep the ISP gateway in control when bridge mode is unavailable

How to configure a supported bridge setup

Menu labels differ by model and ISP firmware. Use the gateway’s own bridge or modem-only instructions rather than treating a similarly named toggle as universal.

  1. Identify the exact gateway model and service. Record the model number, firmware or ISP edition, and whether telephone, television, LTE backup or other bundled services depend on the gateway. Bridge support and side effects can vary between editions.
  2. Confirm that the ISP permits bridge or modem-only mode. TP-Link advises checking the ISP modem documentation before enabling bridge mode. Some providers require support to activate it, and some services may not be available after the handoff.
  3. Read which features the mode disables. Look specifically for NAT, DHCP, DNS, Wi-Fi, LTE and device-count restrictions. NETGEAR’s 4G LTE modem instructions state: “Note: Enabling Bridge mode automatically disables the modem’s DHCP server.” That guide is specific to that modem and allows only one connected device in bridge mode.
  4. Apply the gateway’s bridge or modem-only setting. Follow the exact model procedure. Do not substitute a Wi-Fi-off switch or a standalone DHCP switch unless the guide explicitly says it creates bridge operation.
  5. Connect the Ethernet cable as specified. In NETGEAR’s documented arrangement, the gateway Ethernet port connects to the separate router’s Internet/WAN port. Other gateways may designate a particular LAN port, so follow the device guide.
  6. Set the downstream router to router mode. Enable its WAN connection method required by the ISP, then leave its LAN DHCP service enabled so household devices receive addresses from it.
  7. Choose the Wi-Fi provider deliberately. If bridge mode turns the gateway radio off, configure the downstream router’s wireless networks. If the gateway radio remains active and you do not need it, disable it only according to the gateway instructions; do not infer that wireless status proves bridge status.
  8. Restart in the documented order. If the ISP guide specifies a modem and router restart sequence, use it. Wait for the gateway’s connection indicators, then start or reconnect the downstream router and clients.
  9. Verify the handoff. A client should obtain a local address from the downstream router, use that router as its default gateway and reach the internet. The downstream router should show an ISP-side WAN connection. If the gateway still appears to be assigning LAN addresses or performing NAT, bridge mode may not have taken effect.

Which Wi-Fi setting should you turn off?

When the gateway is genuinely bridged

There is no universal Wi-Fi instruction. Some gateways disable wireless automatically; others leave the radio configurable; still others use a separate access-point or bridge terminology. Linksys instructs users to configure Wi-Fi first when setting up bridge mode on its Dual-Band WiFi Router and warns that screen images vary by model. That is a reminder to follow the model-specific sequence rather than assuming the radio will behave like another brand’s equipment.

If the bridge guide says wireless remains available, decide whether you need it. A downstream router can be the sole Wi-Fi provider, or the gateway may retain a provider-managed wireless function. Disable the gateway radio only when the guide permits it and you have confirmed that no required service depends on it.

When the downstream unit is an AP

For the fallback documented by NETGEAR, the gateway Wi-Fi is turned off and the separate device is placed in AP mode. The gateway continues to route and assign addresses. In this case, do not disable the gateway DHCP service merely because the downstream unit has a DHCP-related setting; AP mode is intended to prevent the second device from acting as another router.

Which DHCP setting should you turn off?

Disable the ISP gateway’s DHCP server only when the gateway is in a supported bridge/modem-only mode that hands LAN duties to the downstream router, or when the device documentation explicitly directs you to do so. In many products, bridge mode disables DHCP automatically. NETGEAR’s LTE documentation says exactly that.

Keep DHCP enabled on the device that owns the LAN:

  • In gateway-bridge plus router mode, that is the downstream router.
  • In gateway-router plus AP mode, that is the ISP gateway.
  • In a deliberately designed network with another DHCP server, that designated server must be configured before any existing DHCP service is removed.

Do not disable DHCP on an ISP gateway that is still the only router for the home. Clients may retain old leases temporarily, making the network appear to work until a device reconnects or its lease expires.

How to tell whether you have double NAT or a DHCP conflict

  • Two routing layers: the gateway still shows router/NAT status while the downstream unit is also in router mode. This is the classic double-NAT arrangement.
  • Two DHCP servers: clients receive addresses, default gateways or DNS settings from inconsistent devices. Symptoms can include intermittent connectivity, unreachable local devices or changing gateway addresses.
  • No DHCP server: newly connected clients fail to obtain a local address, or they assign themselves an automatic private address and cannot reach the internet.
  • Wrong Ethernet port: the cable is connected to a LAN port when the guide requires the gateway’s designated Ethernet port and the downstream router’s WAN port.
  • Bridge did not activate: the gateway still presents its normal LAN management address and continues offering the services that the bridge procedure was supposed to disable.

Troubleshooting after the change

Clients have no local address

Reconnect one client or renew its network lease, then inspect the address and default gateway. If the downstream router is intended to be the router, confirm its LAN DHCP service is enabled and that the client is connected to its LAN or Wi-Fi network. If the gateway is intentionally the router in AP mode, restore or retain gateway DHCP.

  • MU-MIMO technology - (5GHz band) allows high speeds for multiple devices simultaneously
  • Access Point Mode - Supports AP Mode to transform your wired connection into wireless network, an ideal wireless router for home

The router has no internet connection

Check the gateway-to-router cable and the required port assignment. Re-read the ISP’s bridge requirements, including any required WAN connection type or support activation. A bridge setup can also impose a device limit; NETGEAR’s LTE example permits only one connected device, so adding a second device directly to that bridged modem would not match its documented design.

Internet works, but local devices cannot find one another

Determine whether the two devices are accidentally operating as separate routed networks. Put the downstream unit in AP mode if the gateway must remain the router, or complete the gateway bridge procedure and keep the downstream unit in router mode if it is supposed to own the LAN. Avoid solving the symptom by randomly disabling DHCP on both devices.

The gateway’s Wi-Fi disappeared

That can be expected in bridge mode. Confirm that the downstream router’s Wi-Fi is configured and that clients are joining its network. If the gateway radio is required for a bundled service, consult the ISP before changing modes; the documented effects are not identical across gateways.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

You lost access to the gateway’s management page

Bridge mode can change which address is reachable from the home LAN, and some providers restrict management while the gateway is bridged. Use the model’s recovery or management instructions and keep a record of the previous settings before switching modes. Do not factory-reset immediately if the ISP requires a provider-specific configuration.

Model-specific cautions worth checking

  • NETGEAR 4G LTE modem: bridge mode automatically disables DHCP and allows only one connected device in the cited instructions.
  • NETGEAR C7100V: the documented bridge procedure associates disabling NAT with passing the ISP WAN address to a downstream router.
  • BT Business Smart Hub 2: modem-only mode is described as disabling NAT, DHCP, DNS and LTE mobile connections.
  • Synology SRM: its documentation uses “wireless AP (access point) mode” as another name for its own bridge mode and identifies a guest-network DHCP exception.
  • Linksys Dual-Band WiFi Router: its bridge setup instructions put Wi-Fi configuration first and warn that displayed images can differ by model.
  • TP-Link: its guidance is to check the ISP modem documentation before enabling bridge mode.

These examples demonstrate why a setting that is safe on one gateway can be wrong on another. They are not a universal feature list for every ISP device.

A quick decision checklist

  • Does the gateway documentation explicitly offer bridge or modem-only mode?
  • Which device will provide routing, NAT and the firewall?
  • Which device will provide LAN DHCP?
  • Does the bridge procedure disable Wi-Fi, DNS, LTE or other bundled services?
  • Is the cable connected from the specified gateway Ethernet port to the downstream router’s WAN port?
  • Is the downstream device in router mode for a bridged gateway, or AP mode for a gateway that remains the router?
  • Can a newly connected client obtain an address from the intended DHCP server and reach the internet?

If you cannot answer those questions from the exact gateway and ISP instructions, leave the existing settings unchanged and get the provider’s configuration steps. A single correct role assignment is safer than disabling several services in the hope of removing double NAT.
