For a crowded home, change settings in a controlled order: update the router firmware, check whether Multi-Link Operation (MLO) is compatible with your Wi‑Fi 7 devices, preserve a separate network for older or IoT equipment when necessary, enable an isolated guest network, and use device-priority QoS only when you have a specific priority problem. Leave 3-Link MLO, WPA3-only operation, 320 MHz channels, and manual channel selection conditional on your router, clients, firmware, and local rules.
There is no universal “best” Wi‑Fi 7 configuration. A setting that improves one model can prevent an older camera, printer, or smart plug from connecting on another. Make one change at a time and verify the devices that matter most.
1. Check the router model, firmware, and supported features first
Write down the exact model number and hardware revision printed on the router or shown in its administration page. Then install the latest firmware offered for your country. Firmware can add, rename, or remove MLO options, security modes, band controls, and troubleshooting tools.

Linksys Support explicitly warns that “Settings may vary depending on the model number of your device” in its MLO instructions (Linksys Support). ASUS also documents MLO support by model and firmware version rather than as a single setting shared by every Wi‑Fi 7 router (ASUS Global Support).

2. Decide whether Multi-Link Operation should be enabled
MLO lets compatible Wi‑Fi 7 equipment use more than one wireless link across supported bands. Depending on the router and client implementation, it can improve throughput, latency, or connection resilience. It does not automatically increase the speed of your internet plan: traffic still shares the capacity delivered by your ISP and the router’s WAN connection.
Both ends must support the relevant MLO behavior. A Wi‑Fi 7 phone may support a different link combination from a Wi‑Fi 7 laptop, and a router may expose several MLO modes. TP‑Link describes advertised performance on its Archer BE9500 page as dependent on compatible client features and band conditions, not as a guaranteed household result (TP‑Link Archer BE9500 specifications).
Use the mode your router documents
If the administration page offers MLO, read the explanatory text beside each mode. Start with the least aggressive option that supports your newer clients, then test video calls, gaming, file transfers, and roaming between rooms. Keep notes about which devices actually associate with the MLO network; a device showing a Wi‑Fi 7 badge does not prove that it is using every available link.

On Verizon’s documented access point, the company recommends 2-Link MLO for most users and warns that 3-Link MLO can create compatibility problems for older electronics (Verizon Wi‑Fi Access Point FAQs). Treat that as equipment-specific guidance, not a rule for every manufacturer. If enabling MLO makes older devices disappear, disable the problematic mode or move those devices to a compatible SSID.
When MLO is worth trying
- You have several Wi‑Fi 7 clients that support the router’s documented MLO mode.
- Your router’s firmware identifies MLO as supported and provides a clear fallback network.
- You can test the change without disrupting security, smart-home automation, or work devices.
3. Build a compatibility plan for older and IoT devices
Busy homes commonly combine new phones and computers with 2.4 GHz cameras, bulbs, printers, appliances, and game consoles. Those devices may not understand MLO, 6 GHz, WPA3, or a unified SSID that steers clients between bands.

Create an IoT or legacy SSID when needed
Use the router’s supported IoT, legacy, or separate-band profile instead of weakening the main network. ASUS documents an IoT profile using 2.4 and 5 GHz with WPA2-Personal AES in its product-specific guidance, alongside a separate Wi‑Fi 7 SSID (ASUS Global Support). The exact labels and available bands depend on the model.
Tenda’s Wi‑Fi 7 guide explains that separate 2.4 GHz and 5 GHz names can help devices that support only 2.4 GHz connect reliably (Tenda Wi‑Fi 7 Router User Guide, V1.0). Separation is useful when a device’s setup app cannot handle band steering, not because every home must use multiple names.
Use a repeatable migration test
- Leave the existing network available while you create the new profile.
- Connect one representative smart device and complete its setup from the manufacturer’s app.
- Confirm that the device remains reachable after the phone leaves the room or changes bands.
- Move similar devices in batches, checking automation, printing, casting, and local-control features after each batch.
Never disable encryption simply to make an old device connect. If it requires an older security mode, isolate it on the router’s supported IoT or legacy network and keep sensitive computers on the stronger main network.
4. Match security mode to band and client support
Use the strongest security mode that all devices on a particular SSID can use. Security and band availability are linked: 6 GHz operation commonly requires WPA3, while older clients may require WPA2 or a transition mode.
- Linksys documents WPA3 for 6 GHz on supported products and describes WPA2/WPA3 Mixed or higher for its configuration (Linksys Support).
- Verizon describes WPA3 on 6 GHz and a WPA3 transition for its 3-Link mode (Verizon Wi‑Fi Access Point FAQs).
- ASUS’s documented IoT profile uses WPA2-Personal AES for compatible older devices (ASUS Global Support).
These are product-specific examples. Check the security choices shown by your router before changing an SSID. If a 6 GHz client cannot join, verify that its operating system and wireless driver support WPA3 and that the SSID is not configured for an incompatible transition policy.

5. Turn on a guest network with isolation
Create a guest SSID for visitors, smart displays used by guests, or other equipment that should have internet access without access to your home LAN. Enable the router’s client or network isolation control when available.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Tenda documents guest clients as internet-only, without access to the router’s web interface or other networks (Tenda Wi‑Fi 7 Router User Guide, V1.0). Other routers may expose separate switches for “access intranet,” device-to-device communication, or guest isolation. Verify the actual behavior by checking whether a guest device can discover a printer, network storage, or router login page; if it can, tighten the isolation settings.
Give guests a different password from the administrative account and main Wi‑Fi. Remove or rotate the guest password if it has been shared widely.
6. Treat channel width as a conditional optimization
Wider channels can provide more peak wireless capacity, but they also require compatible clients and clean, legally available spectrum. They are not a universal remedy for congestion.
TP‑Link lists 320 MHz operation as 6 GHz-only on the cited Archer BE9500 and notes that client support and regional availability apply (TP‑Link Archer BE9500 specifications). Tenda’s guide exposes selectable bandwidth options for its own model (Tenda Wi‑Fi 7 Router User Guide, V1.0). Your country may restrict portions of 6 GHz or very wide channels, and neighboring networks can make a narrower channel more stable.

Leave bandwidth on Auto or the vendor’s recommended value unless you have a measured reason to change it. Test a wide setting with several clients, then check range, retransmissions, and stability—not just a single speed-test peak.
7. Do not choose a manual channel without evidence
The available documentation does not establish one channel that is best for every busy home. Automatic channel selection can respond to local interference and regulatory rules; a manual choice can help only when a scan or repeated measurements identify a persistent problem.
If you experiment, record the original channel, select a permitted channel shown by the router, and test at the locations where performance matters. Revert if latency, roaming, or older-device connectivity worsens. A manual channel cannot fix a dead zone caused by distance, walls, or poor placement.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.8. Use QoS only for a defined priority problem
Device-based Quality of Service (QoS) can prioritize a work laptop, voice handset, console, or other device when the router supports it. TP‑Link documents per-device QoS on the Archer BE9500 and BE9700 product pages (Archer BE9500; Archer BE9700).
QoS is a traffic-management control, not a guaranteed cure for every slowdown. First identify whether the bottleneck is the ISP link, a saturated upload, weak Wi‑Fi signal, or a slow server. Then prioritize the device or activity that actually needs predictable service. Avoid assigning every device the highest priority; that removes the distinction QoS is meant to provide.

9. Separate congestion from coverage problems
More settings will not repair a room where the signal is consistently weak. Walk through the home with a phone or laptop and compare signal and latency near the router, in the problem room, and during the slowdown. If only one area is poor, improve placement or consider a compatible mesh or access point. TP‑Link documents EasyMesh compatibility for the Archer BE9700 as a coverage option (Archer BE9700 specifications); mesh is not automatically a solution to congestion when coverage is already strong.
Place the main router in a central, elevated location away from metal cabinets and large appliances. If several rooms have strong signal but all devices slow when the household uploads or downloads heavily, investigate WAN capacity and QoS before buying additional wireless nodes.
10. A safe change-and-recovery sequence
- Export or photograph the current configuration and note the firmware version.
- Update firmware and reboot all important clients.
- Create or verify a compatible IoT/legacy SSID before changing the main SSID’s security or MLO settings.
- Enable the documented MLO mode for compatible Wi‑Fi 7 clients and test newer devices first.
- Configure WPA3 or mixed security per band, keeping older devices on their compatible profile.
- Enable guest access and isolation, then test that guests cannot reach local resources.
- Leave channel width and channel selection automatic unless measurements justify a change.
- Apply QoS to a specific device only after identifying a prioritization need.
- If a key device fails, undo the last change, reconnect it, and consult the model’s manual before proceeding.
Quick reference: what to change and when
| Setting | Safe starting point | Use a different value when |
|---|---|---|
| Firmware | Install the current model- and region-specific release. | The router’s release notes or support page identifies a compatibility issue or required rollback. |
| MLO | Enable the documented mode for compatible Wi‑Fi 7 clients. | Older devices fail, or the router offers a mode with known compatibility limits. |
| IoT/legacy network | Use a separate supported SSID with compatible bands and security. | A camera, bulb, printer, or appliance cannot join the main network. |
| Security | Use the strongest mode supported by every client on that SSID. | 6 GHz requires WPA3, or older clients require a WPA2-compatible profile. |
| Guest access | Enable guest isolation and internet-only access where offered. | A guest device can reach local devices or the router administration page. |
| Channel width | Use Auto or the manufacturer’s recommended width. | Compatible clients, local spectrum, and regional rules support a measured wider-channel benefit. |
| QoS | Leave off until a specific priority need is identified. | A supported device-priority control matches a tested congestion problem. |
Common symptoms and the first check
A Wi‑Fi 7 phone connects, but an older bulb does not
Check whether the main SSID uses MLO, 6 GHz, or WPA3-only security. Move the bulb to the router’s documented 2.4 GHz IoT or legacy profile instead of weakening the Wi‑Fi 7 network.
Devices disconnect after enabling MLO
Confirm that the router firmware and client drivers are current. Try the router’s less aggressive MLO mode, such as the documented 2-Link option on Verizon’s access point, or disable MLO temporarily while preserving a separate network for newer clients.
Speed tests are high near the router but poor in one room
Measure signal and latency in that room. This pattern indicates coverage or interference rather than a need to force 320 MHz channels. Improve placement or evaluate a compatible mesh or access point.
Video calls stutter while someone uploads large files
Check the WAN upload limit and, if available, apply QoS to the work device or calling application. Test with and without the rule; the router’s documentation does not guarantee a universal QoS result.
