The title “PlayStation Plus is hiding a PS2 rarity for free” does not identify a single game: the available reports point to at least two possibilities, Mister Mosquito and Gitaroo Man. A third odd PS2 title, Ghosthunter, has also been reported as a Premium addition. PlayStation Plus catalog access is a subscription benefit, not automatically a permanent free-to-keep purchase, and older catalog reports do not confirm what is available in your region today.
Which PS2 game does the headline mean?
The description is too ambiguous to identify one game. “Freakiest” is subjective, and dated reports describe several very different PS2 titles that joined the PlayStation Plus Premium catalog. The evidence does not establish which one the headline’s author owns or intended.
| Game | What it is | Catalog report | What “rare” or “odd” means here |
|---|---|---|---|
| Mister Mosquito (also called Mr Moskeeto in Europe and Ka in Japan) | An odd stealth-action game in which you control a mosquito trying to drink a Japanese family’s blood without being caught. | Games Asylum reported its PlayStation Plus Premium arrival on September 11, 2024; this report does not confirm current availability in every region. Games Asylum | The unusual premise supports calling it an oddity; no quantitative rarity ranking is established. |
| Gitaroo Man | A rhythm adventure about a schoolboy who becomes a guitar-wielding hero and fights through musical battles. | GameSpot reported its Classics Catalog arrival on June 2, 2026. Push Square reported on June 16, 2026 that players could access it through Premium or buy it outright. Those dated reports do not establish the current regional listing. GameSpot; Push Square | GameSpot characterized its Western release quantities as low, but provided no precise sales figure or rarity ranking. |
| Ghosthunter | A separate PS2 action-horror game with a strange premise, developed by SCE Studio Cambridge. | Forbes reported its Premium arrival on June 12, 2024; that report does not verify current availability. Forbes | Its unusual action-horror premise is not evidence of a measured rarity ranking. |
What do the games actually involve?
Mister Mosquito: stealth from a mosquito’s point of view
You control a mosquito, learn a family’s routines, and try to drink blood from different body parts without being detected. The premise is the clearest basis for describing this candidate as freaky or strange; it is not a conventional horror game just because the player is a mosquito. Games Asylum

Gitaroo Man: musical battles
This is a rhythm adventure, not a horror or stealth game. Its central idea is a schoolboy becoming a guitar-playing hero and taking part in music-based battles. The “rarity” claim is limited to GameSpot’s qualitative description of low Western release quantities; it does not establish how many copies exist or what a copy is worth. GameSpot; Push Square

- Hundreds of hours of nostalgic gameplay

Ghosthunter: action horror
Ghosthunter is the action-horror alternative in the reports, distinct from Mister Mosquito’s odd stealth premise and Gitaroo Man’s rhythm battles. Forbes reported its Premium arrival in June 2024, but that dated account is not a live catalog check. Forbes
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Does “free” mean you can keep the game?
No: access through a PlayStation Plus catalog is subscription access, rather than an outright purchase that permanently adds the game to your library. PlayStation describes its Classics Catalog as including titles from PS1, PS2, and PS3, but its broad editorial page does not prove that any particular game is listed for your account or region now. How to check whether you can play it
- Open the PlayStation Store for your account’s country or region and search the exact title: Mister Mosquito, Gitaroo Man, or Ghosthunter.
- Check the listing’s current access terms. If it says access is included with PlayStation Plus Premium, the game is available through that subscription tier under the listing’s terms; if it offers a separate purchase, that is a different access option.
- Confirm the listing is for the console and edition you can use before subscribing or buying. Catalog membership and store listings can vary by region and change over time.
What the available reports do not settle
- They do not identify which game the headline’s author meant or owns.
- They do not confirm any candidate’s current availability in every regional catalog.
- They do not provide a quantitative rarity measure, sales total, or reliable collector value for any of the games.
Product prices and availability are accurate as of the date/time indicated and are subject to change. Any price and availability information displayed on Amazon at the time of purchase will apply.
