Before launch, configure Weglot’s API key, original language, destination languages, translation scope, URL behavior, language switcher, and deployment method. Then inspect translated pages, metadata, navigation, forms, and authenticated or dynamic journeys on the live site. Weglot’s automatic output is a starting point—not proof that every language URL or user flow works.
Start with the three settings Weglot requires
A WordPress connection cannot be evaluated until Weglot knows which project it belongs to and how the language relationship works. In the WordPress admin, install and activate the Weglot plugin, open its settings screen, and enter the project API key, the language in which the site was originally written, and at least one destination language. Weglot identifies those three values as the mandatory integration settings.
Connect the correct project
- Install Weglot from Plugins > Add New, then activate it.
- Open the Weglot settings screen and paste the API key for the project that will serve this site. Check the key character by character; a key from another project can connect successfully while exposing the wrong language configuration.
- Set the original language to the language used by the source WordPress content. Do not choose a language merely because it is the site owner’s preferred language.
- Select the destination languages you intend to publish. Treat this as a content commitment: every selected language expands the pages, navigation, metadata, forms, and maintenance work that must be checked.
- Save the settings and load the public site in a private browser window to confirm that Weglot is actually processing the connection.
Dashboard labels can change as Weglot updates its product. Use the current labels in your account rather than relying on an old screenshot or an assumed menu name.

Weglot translates all pages by default. That broad scope is convenient for a small brochure site, but it can expose content that should remain private, is already maintained manually, or is unsuitable for automatic translation.

Use URL exclusions for whole pages
Exclude pages such as private account areas, login screens, checkout pages, internal dashboards, or legal pages that your organization already maintains in approved languages. You may also exclude a page that should not be machine-translated until an editor has prepared it.
An exclusion controls future processing of that URL; it does not automatically erase translations Weglot has already generated. If removing those stored translations is part of your cleanup plan, use Weglot’s separate deletion option after confirming that the content is no longer needed.
Use block exclusions for sections
A block exclusion keeps a specific section unchanged while the rest of the page remains in scope. This is useful for code samples, product names, embedded widgets, regulated wording, or a small legal notice that must stay in its approved language. Test the rendered result, because a block boundary that is too broad can leave headings, buttons, or nearby text untranslated.

Inspect translated URLs and SEO output
Weglot documents language-specific URLs for translated pages, hreflang tags, and translated SEO metadata in WordPress. Those features still require inspection: automatic SEO output does not prove that every URL resolves, that metadata is appropriate, or that the page shown is the intended translation.
Check representative source output
- Choose a representative set of pages: the home page, one deep content page, a page with images or forms, and any page that receives substantial traffic.
- Open each destination-language URL in a fresh browser session. Check that the page loads with the expected language and does not redirect to the original-language version.
- View the HTML source or use browser developer tools to inspect the canonical and hreflang elements. Confirm that the language references point to real, corresponding URLs.
- Inspect the translated title, meta description, social metadata where used, navigation labels, and internal links. A translated page can contain translated body text while retaining an unsuitable title or linking visitors back to the source language.
- Check a page that should not be translated and confirm that its exclusion behaves as intended.
Weglot’s WordPress SEO guidance says x-default is not added by default. If your international targeting requires an x-default alternate, treat that as a separate implementation decision rather than assuming Weglot supplies it automatically.
Choose a URL architecture that matches your deployment
For production, Weglot supports language-specific subdirectories and subdomains. Both approaches create dedicated URLs, but they place different responsibilities on your infrastructure. Weglot states that these integrations require a domain and DNS access.

There is no universal winner in these options. Record who controls DNS, certificates, redirects, caching, and deployment before selecting a production architecture. A staging configuration that is easy to test may not be the configuration you can operate reliably after launch.

Decide whether translated slugs are necessary
Weglot uses the original URL slug by default. A French page may therefore display translated content while retaining the source-language wording in its path. That is a valid choice when stable URLs and simpler operations matter more than localized paths.
Translated slugs are available on Pro plans or higher for supported server-side integrations such as WordPress, according to Weglot’s current help guidance. If localized paths matter to your audience, confirm that your plan and integration qualify before promising them.

- Decide whether visitors benefit from seeing translated words in the path, or whether preserving the original slug reduces migration and redirect risk.
- If translation is required, verify plan eligibility and enable the slug-translation feature in the current Weglot interface.
- Set the translated slug for each important page rather than assuming a machine-generated path is editorially suitable.
- Open the resulting links from menus, buttons, XML sitemaps where applicable, and old bookmarks. Check for incorrect redirects, duplicate paths, or links that still point to the original-language URL.
- Document the final paths so future editors do not change a translated slug without considering redirects and inbound links.

Place the language switcher where people can use it
Weglot can place its switcher in a WordPress menu, widget, shortcode, or page source. The default is a floating button at the bottom right, and the Switcher Editor provides controls for styling and placement. The best location depends on your theme, navigation hierarchy, and mobile layout.

After saving the placement, test it as an anonymous visitor. Select each destination language and confirm that the current page—not merely the home page—opens in the corresponding version. Check desktop, tablet, and mobile widths, plus keyboard navigation and visible focus states.

Use Weglot’s contextual editing tools to review important text and metadata against the rendered page. Prioritize the elements that can prevent a visitor from understanding or completing a task:
- Header and footer navigation, breadcrumbs, menus, and search labels.
- Headlines, calls to action, pricing or plan descriptions, and error messages.
- Page titles, meta descriptions, Open Graph fields, and image alternative text where translated.
- Forms, validation messages, confirmation pages, consent wording, and contact details.
- Legal notices, account instructions, and purchase-path content that your organization must approve.
Know what the Visual Editor cannot prove
Weglot notes that its Visual Editor preview may not support login systems, cart actions, cookie banners, and some dynamic or personalized content. A visually correct preview therefore does not establish that an authenticated or transactional journey works.
Run those journeys on the actual site: sign in with a test account, add and remove an item if the site has commerce, submit forms, trigger validation errors, accept or reject cookie controls, and test any content that changes by user, location, or session. Record which strings are intentionally unchanged so reviewers do not “correct” approved terminology.
Match the integration to your launch stage
Use the JavaScript integration while testing, developing, or staging when that is the simplest way to review translations. For a production site that needs dedicated language URLs, plan the subdirectory or subdomain implementation early enough to coordinate DNS, certificates, redirects, caching, analytics, and deployment ownership.
Staging checks
- Confirm that the staging domain is not accidentally treated as the final public URL.
- Test representative translated pages and the switcher without allowing staging redirects or cached responses to leak into production.
- Document which settings must change when moving from JavaScript testing to the chosen production architecture.
Production handoff
- Assign a person responsible for DNS and domain changes.
- Prepare redirects for any paths that change, including translated slugs.
- Verify that your CDN, cache, security rules, sitemap process, and monitoring recognize every language host or path.
- Repeat the public-site checks after DNS propagation and after the production cache is populated.
Troubleshoot a missing language switcher
If the switcher is absent, follow Weglot’s documented checks in this order:
- Return to the Weglot settings screen, verify the API key, and save the settings again.
- Check URL exclusions. A rule that excludes the current page or its template can prevent the switcher from appearing where you expect it.
- Inspect the selected placement. A menu or widget location may conflict with the active theme, be disabled on a particular template, or be hidden at a responsive breakpoint.
- Temporarily test another supported placement, such as the floating button, to separate a placement conflict from a connection problem.
- Clear relevant caches and test in a private window. Check both the page source and the rendered page if a caching or optimization plugin is involved.
- Restore your intended placement only after the switcher appears and changes the current page to the correct destination-language URL.
Use this go/no-go audit before publishing
Do not launch until each item has an owner and a recorded result:
