For most newer players who already own Cataclysm, awaken Cataclysm first. A 2026 independent Anime0 Wiki guide reports a 3,000-Gem requirement and materials that can be obtained outside raids. Flame Director is described by that guide as stronger overall, but its reported 10,000-Gem cost and Ghost and Staff of Homa requirements make it a later project for most beginners because those items come from the Nightmare-only Spirit’s Bathtub raid.
If you are already established, use a different rule: awaken the weapon in your active loadout whose recipe you can realistically finish now. The best first evolution is usually a weapon you use every run, not a theoretically stronger weapon sitting unfinished in storage.
The quick recommendation
- New player with Cataclysm: start with Cataclysm, provided the live Evolution menu shows that you can gather its ingredients.
- Experienced player with a main weapon: finish the near-complete evolution for the weapon you actively use.
- Considering Flame Director: treat it as a longer-term goal unless you already have the Gems, Ghost, Staff of Homa, and reliable access to Spirit’s Bathtub on Nightmare.
- Any situation: check the in-game recipe immediately before farming. Recipes and drop locations can change after a patch.
These recommendations are conditional rather than a permanent tier list. The available figures come from independent guides, not an official developer recipe table, and the game’s menu is the final authority.
What awakening does
In Anime Zero Evolution, evolving a weapon unlocks that weapon’s ultimate ability, according to the current independent guides. That makes the first awakening a progression decision rather than a cosmetic upgrade: you are choosing which ultimate and which farming route will shape your next stage of play.

An awakening also consumes Gems and named materials. Spending on a weapon you rarely equip can leave your main build without the resources needed for its own evolution. Conversely, delaying a weapon that is one or two ingredients from completion can waste time if you switch to a much more expensive project.

Why Cataclysm is the practical beginner choice
Cataclysm’s reported 3,000-Gem bill is substantially lower than Flame Director’s reported 10,000 Gems. More importantly, the listed Cataclysm ingredients are described as obtainable outside raids. A newer player can therefore work toward the awakening while following ordinary progression instead of first unlocking a specific high-difficulty activity.
The material names matter when you plan your inventory: Fine Cloth, Mana Feathers, Wave Cores, Soul Fragments and Magic Pendants are all part of the guide-reported set. Do not assume that having four of the five is enough; the game may require particular quantities, and either the recipe or the drop source may have changed since the guide was written.

Cataclysm is not automatically the correct choice for every account. If you do not use it, cannot equip it effectively, or already have another weapon nearly ready, forcing Cataclysm first can delay a more useful ultimate.
When Flame Director should come first
Flame Director becomes a sensible first target when three conditions line up:
- You actively use Flame Director or plan to make it your main weapon.
- You can meet the live Gem and material requirements without abandoning nearer-term upgrades.
- You have access to the activity that supplies its gated items, particularly the Nightmare-only Spirit’s Bathtub raid if the current recipe still requires Ghost and Staff of Homa.
The independent guide calls Flame Director stronger overall, but it does not publish a test setup, damage measurements or a reproducible tier methodology. Use that wording as a reason to investigate the weapon, not as proof that it outperforms every build in every mode.

How to verify the recipe before you farm
Use the in-game Evolution interface as your source of truth. The current Games.gg guide specifically warns that recipes can change.

- Open Areas from the game interface.
- Travel to the Evolution area.
- Interact with the Evolution NPC.
- Select the weapon you are considering.
- Scroll through the entire requirement list, including any entries below the first screen.
- Compare every quantity with your inventory and note which items you can obtain in your currently unlocked modes.
Take a screenshot or write down the list before starting a long farm. Recheck the menu after a patch, after a raid rotation change or whenever a guide’s numbers conflict with what you see in game. The menu’s quantities override a guide’s 3,000- or 10,000-Gem figure if they differ.
A decision framework for different accounts
New account with Cataclysm
Choose Cataclysm first if the live menu confirms the reported lower-cost path and you can gather its materials through activities you already play. Farm only the missing ingredients, keep the required Gems unspent, and avoid beginning a second evolution until Cataclysm is complete.
New account without Cataclysm
Do not switch to Flame Director solely because a guide labels it stronger. First inspect the weapons you own and identify the one with a complete or nearly complete recipe that fits your current modes. If every attractive option requires a raid you cannot enter, continue normal progression until one practical recipe becomes available rather than spending Gems on an unused weapon.

Established player with a reliable main
Follow the Games.gg recommendation to complete one useful weapon at a time. A near-complete evolution on your active weapon generally has a better opportunity cost than a half-finished upgrade on a weapon you do not equip. Check whether the remaining items are ordinary drops, raid-gated drops or difficulty-gated drops; that determines how quickly the project can actually finish.

Player with Nightmare access
If you can consistently run Spirit’s Bathtub on Nightmare and already possess Ghost and Staff of Homa, Flame Director may move ahead of Cataclysm—especially if Flame Director is your main weapon. If those items are still missing, count the raid access and Gem cost as part of the project instead of treating the weapon as nearly complete.
Plan the farm around bottlenecks
- Separate Gems from materials: an item checklist can look short while the Gem requirement remains the real barrier. Reserve the required Gems before buying optional upgrades.
- Identify gated drops first: raid- or difficulty-exclusive items determine whether an evolution is feasible now. For Flame Director, verify whether Ghost and Staff of Homa still come from Spirit’s Bathtub on Nightmare.
- Farm broad-access materials during routine play: Cataclysm’s reported Fine Cloth, Mana Feathers, Wave Cores, Soul Fragments and Magic Pendants are described as dropping outside raids, so collect them while progressing rather than spending Gems to bypass the route.
- Track quantities, not just names: the same material can be easy to obtain but required in a large quantity. Record current and required totals separately.
- Finish one evolution: splitting resources between two weapons delays both ultimates and makes it harder to tell which project is actually progressing.
Common mistakes and how to recover
Following an old guide literally
Independent guides can lag behind a patch. If a listed cost or drop source disagrees with the Evolution NPC, stop farming the guide’s route and follow the live menu. Recalculate your plan using the current quantities rather than trying to force the old recipe.
Choosing the highest-sounding tier
“Stronger overall” is not the same as a tested universal ranking. Without published methods, the phrase does not tell you how Flame Director performs with your traits, upgrades, mode or skill level. Prioritize a weapon you can use and finish.

A weapon can look attractive while being inaccessible. If you cannot enter Nightmare or clear Spirit’s Bathtub reliably, Flame Director’s Ghost and Staff of Homa requirements may turn the awakening into an open-ended wait. Select a weapon whose remaining materials match your current access.

Spending the reserved Gems
Optional purchases can push an otherwise complete recipe out of reach. Once you select an evolution, ring-fence the required Gems until the awakening is paid for and verified in the menu.
Assuming ownership means usefulness
Owning Cataclysm does not require you to awaken it first if you never equip it. Compare the weapon’s role in your active loadout with the amount of work left on other weapons before committing.
Worked examples
Example: early progression
You own Cataclysm, have ordinary access to the game’s areas and are missing several listed materials but no raid-exclusive item. The practical route is to select Cataclysm in the Evolution menu, record the exact quantities, reserve 3,000 Gems only if the menu still shows that amount, and gather the five reported material types through available activities. Flame Director can remain a later objective while you build Nightmare access.
Example: veteran account with two options
You use Flame Director every run and have Ghost and Staff of Homa, while Cataclysm is unused and only partly collected. Even though the guide reports a lower Cataclysm cost, Flame Director is the more rational first awakening if the live menu confirms its recipe and you can pay the reported 10,000 Gems. The active weapon’s immediate ultimate has greater practical value than a cheaper evolution you will not equip.
Example: near-complete alternative
You own neither a complete Cataclysm nor the Nightmare materials for Flame Director, but another weapon in your loadout is missing one accessible ingredient. Follow the one-at-a-time rule and finish that weapon first. Revisit Cataclysm when its recipe becomes the shortest useful path.
What is actually established about the costs
The 3,000-Gem Cataclysm and 10,000-Gem Flame Director figures are reports from an Anime0 Wiki guide dated to 2026, not official published statistics. The same source reports Cataclysm’s material set and the Spirit’s Bathtub source for Flame Director’s Ghost and Staff of Homa. Because recipes and drop tables are patch-sensitive, quote those numbers only with their date and guide attribution, and verify the current menu before spending.
The current Games.gg guide, updated October 12, 2026, supplies the broader planning rule: complete one useful weapon at a time and prefer a near-complete recipe for an active weapon over a half-finished upgrade on an unused one. That rule remains useful even when individual ingredient lists change.
