Before you pull away, review Waze’s route preferences, vehicle and toll-pass details, alerts, privacy controls, personalized routing, and audio output. Set them while parked, then compare the routes Waze actually offers: options such as Avoid toll roads are preferences, not guarantees that every route will exclude tolls, ferries, or freeways. Also remember that alerts depend on map information supplied by partners and editors, so they cannot replace posted signs or attentive driving.
Start with a parked, trip-specific review
Waze settings are not universally “best.” A commuter who wants the fastest route may accept a toll, while a holiday driver may prefer a slower road with no tolls or ferries. Make changes before moving the car; interacting with a phone while driving is unsafe and may be illegal where you drive.
Open Waze on your phone and check the settings that can change the route or the way information reaches you. Menu names and availability can vary by app version, device, country, and vehicle connection. Many settings are changed on the phone even when Waze is displayed through a car system; the changes take effect when you connect and start navigating.
- Route preferences: toll roads, ferries, and freeways.
- Vehicle type, toll passes, vignettes, and HOV eligibility.
- Road-feature and enforcement alerts.
- Public visibility, history, ad personalization, and location access.
- Personalized routes and estimated times of arrival.
- Voice prompts and whether audio comes from the phone speaker or the car.
Choose route preferences in Settings → Navigation
Avoid toll roads
In Settings → Navigation, review Avoid toll roads. Turn it on when avoiding a charge matters more than the time saved by a toll route. Turn it off when the toll is acceptable and the faster route is worth paying for. Waze says it may still suggest a toll road when avoidance is enabled if that is the only route available at the time. It also says the first route should be toll-free when toll avoidance is on, unless no toll-free route is available.

Avoid ferries
Avoid ferries is useful when a crossing is closed, seasonal, unsuitable for your vehicle, or simply not part of your plan. The preference does not promise that every offered route will avoid a ferry; available roads determine what Waze can provide. Check the route preview for the crossing and its expected travel time before you start.
Avoid freeways
Enable Avoid freeways when you deliberately want local roads, a slower scenic drive, or a route suitable for a vehicle that should not use a freeway. Disable it when a freeway is the practical or safest way to reach the destination. As with tolls and ferries, Waze can include a freeway when alternatives are unavailable.
Compare the offered routes instead of toggling every avoidance option
You can adjust avoidance options while setting up a route; the change applies to future drives. After entering your destination, compare the displayed routes for ETA, toll indications, road type, and any ferry or restricted-lane segment. An avoidance setting expresses a preference, while the route choices show what is possible for this particular departure.

Correct your vehicle, passes, and HOV eligibility
Check vehicle type
If Waze proposes an express or HOV lane unexpectedly, inspect Toll and HOV passes and the vehicle type. Waze’s guidance specifically advises checking whether the vehicle should be set to Private rather than Taxi or Electric car. A vehicle category can influence routing, so an old setting may send you toward lanes you cannot legally use.
Review toll passes and vignettes
Remove an expired pass and add any current road pass or vignette that applies to your journey. Waze documents passes as a way to account for local road-access rules, but names and availability differ by country. Passes are dynamic and can change with local-authority rules, so confirm that the listed pass is valid for the places and dates you plan to drive.

Do not claim a lane you cannot use
Only list a toll or HOV entitlement that is actually valid for your vehicle and occupants. If you are unsure, set the vehicle to the ordinary private-vehicle option, remove questionable passes, and leave toll avoidance configured according to your real preference. Then inspect the route for express or HOV segments before navigation begins.
Make alerts useful without treating them as complete
Select road-feature alerts you can act on
Waze lets you decide whether individual road features appear on the map or produce an alert while driving. Documented types include railroad crossings, traffic lights, toll booths, speed bumps, sharp curves, speed-limit changes, complex intersections, merging areas, and school zones. Keep warnings that help you prepare early; silence categories that create noise and make important prompts easier to miss.
Some alert behavior is specific. Waze says a railroad-crossing alert remains on screen until you have crossed the tracks. It also says a speed-limit-change alert may not appear if you are already below the new limit. These are behavior rules, not promises that every crossing or speed-limit change is mapped.
Understand average-speed enforcement notices
In countries that use average-speed enforcement zones, Waze says it can provide voice and visual notifications. Camera information depends on reports from partners and editors. Waze displays your live speed but does not currently calculate or show your average speed through the zone. Follow the posted limit and local signs rather than relying on the app to measure compliance.
Know the map-data limitation
Road-feature alerts are only as complete as the underlying map. Waze says an unreported feature may be unknown to the app. A missing warning does not mean that a crossing, camera, school zone, or sharp curve is absent. Keep your attention on the road and obey signs even when an alert is enabled.

Set privacy and location controls deliberately
Use Go invisible when you do not want public map details
Under Settings → Privacy, Go invisible controls whether details such as your username, mood, and points can be displayed publicly on the map. Friends may still see a name and photo depending on the account and sharing settings. Enable the option when public visibility is not useful to you; leave it off when you intentionally participate in Waze’s social features.

Waze provides controls for navigation history and recent locations. Delete drives or destinations from their respective lists when you no longer want them retained in the app. Account deletion removes saved places and navigation history, but Waze says contributed map edits and statistical drive data are not removed; they are no longer linked to the account.
Review background location on the phone
Depending on your settings, Waze can check location while the app is not in use for features such as planned-drive reminders, traffic updates, and parking assistance. Review both Waze’s privacy controls and your phone’s operating-system permission for location access. Restrict background access if the convenience is not worth the additional location sharing, understanding that some background features may stop working.
Decide whether to personalize ads
The privacy controls include ad personalization. Waze says turning personalization off changes the relevance of ads, not whether ads appear at all. If you disable it, expect to continue seeing advertising while receiving less personalized selection. For the details of data use, consult Waze’s current Privacy Policy from the app or its support site.
Choose whether personalized routes and ETAs fit you
Waze says personalized routing is on by default and can be turned off. When enabled, it may use past routes to suggest choices such as avoiding a street you often detour around or favoring main roads over back streets. Personalized routes and ETAs are not supported in every area, and personalized ETAs may require enough drives in navigation history.

Leave personalization on if you value route choices that reflect your driving patterns. Turn it off if you do not want past drives used for that purpose or if you prefer a route based only on current conditions and your explicit settings. Deleting drives from navigation history means those drives will not be used for personalized routes. Do not expect either choice to guarantee a lower ETA or a particular road.
Make voice prompts audible in your car
Choose the output path
Waze documents a Play sound to phone speaker option. When enabled, directions and alerts play through the phone speaker. When disabled, they can play over your music at a slightly higher volume, depending on the vehicle and audio connection. Set this while parked and test a spoken prompt before departure.
Check compatible audio apps
Waze lists compatible audio players, but availability can vary by country and additional apps can be supported over time. Confirm that your preferred player is connected and that its volume does not mask navigation instructions. If prompts are missing, check the phone’s media volume, the car’s source selection, and Waze’s sound setting before assuming the route is silent.
Use a quick decision framework before you press Go

Fix common surprises before the trip starts
Waze still shows a toll, ferry, or freeway
Confirm the relevant avoidance switch, then inspect the alternate routes and the route details. Waze may include the avoided feature when it is the only available path. Check passes and vehicle type as well; an entitlement can change the route Waze considers appropriate.

An HOV or express lane appears unexpectedly
Open Toll and HOV passes, remove expired passes, and verify that the vehicle is set correctly. If you cannot legally use the lane, choose a route without it and recheck toll avoidance.

An expected warning does not appear
Look at the alert category and confirm it is enabled for map display or driving notification. Then account for Waze’s map-data limitation: an unreported feature may not be known, and some alerts have conditions under which they do not appear. Use signs and your own observation as the authority.
Directions are hard to hear
Decide whether Waze should use the phone speaker or the car audio, raise the appropriate volume while parked, and verify that the car is playing the intended audio source. A compatible player or connection can vary by country and device.
Personalized suggestions do not appear
Check that personalization is enabled, that navigation history has not been deleted, and that the feature is supported in your area. Waze says personalized ETAs may require enough previous drives, so a new or recently cleared history may not provide them.
Final pre-drive checklist
- Open Settings → Navigation and set toll, ferry, and freeway preferences for this trip.
- Enter the destination and compare route ETAs, tolls, road types, and any ferry or HOV segment.
- Confirm the vehicle type and current toll, HOV, and vignette entries.
- Enable only the road-feature alerts that help you, remembering that missing map reports cannot be fixed by a setting.
- Under Settings → Privacy, review Go invisible, history, ad personalization, and background-location permissions.
- Choose whether personalized routes and ETAs should use your past drives.
- Test voice prompts and select phone-speaker or car-audio playback before moving.
These checks take only a few minutes but align Waze with the actual vehicle, passengers, road rules, privacy preference, and priorities of the drive you are about to make.
