For a small production Odoo installation, start with 2 vCPUs and 4 GB RAM on fast SSD or NVMe storage. Move to 4 vCPUs and 8 GB for roughly 30–60 peak concurrent users, and consider 8–10 vCPUs with 16–32 GB—or a separate PostgreSQL server—when usage, reporting, imports, or background jobs become substantial. These are planning baselines, not vendor guarantees: Odoo’s own worker estimates, your peak concurrency, enabled modules, database activity, and attachment growth determine the final size.

Odoo was formerly called OpenERP. The same sizing principles apply to a current self-hosted Odoo deployment, whether you install directly on Linux or use containers.

Start with peak workload, not the user count on your license

VPS sizing is driven by what happens at the busiest moment, not by the number of employee accounts. Ask how many people will be active simultaneously, which applications are enabled, how often scheduled actions run, how complex reports are, and how quickly the database and file attachments will grow.

  • Peak concurrent users: Count users who may click, save, search, or open records during the same interval. Ten occasional users do not create the same load as ten people posting invoices at once.
  • Modules: Accounting, inventory, manufacturing, point of sale, website, and e-commerce can create very different database and reporting workloads.
  • Scheduled work: Mail queues, stock rules, imports, automated actions, and other cron jobs compete with interactive requests.
  • Reports and custom code: Large PDF reports, computed fields, inefficient SQL, and unindexed custom modules can consume a worker for a long time.
  • Data growth: Product images, documents, chatter attachments, database backups, and logs need capacity in addition to the operating system and application.

Use the numbers below as a first sizing model and then validate them with CPU, memory, database, and request-latency monitoring under your own workload. Odoo’s figures are documentation estimates, not a minimum plan or a performance promise from a VPS provider.

How Odoo workers translate into CPU and RAM

The CPU ceiling

Odoo’s 2026 documentation gives the rule of thumb (#CPU × 2) + 1 for the theoretical number of workers. In its example guidance, one worker is approximately six concurrent users. Treat this as a ceiling and sanity check rather than a guarantee that every worker will sustain six users under every module mix.

Production should use Odoo’s multi-process server. The default threaded mode is intended for simple development or demonstrations and is not the production architecture.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

For an initial estimate, divide peak concurrent users by six and round up to estimate HTTP workers. Add a cron worker, then check that the total does not exceed the CPU rule. For example, 30 peak users suggest five HTTP workers plus one cron worker. A four-vCPU machine has a theoretical ceiling of nine workers, leaving room for that six-worker estimate and operational overhead. The exact worker setting belongs in your Odoo configuration and must be checked against real CPU saturation and response times.

The RAM estimate

Odoo estimates that a heavy worker consumes around 1 GB of RAM when computed fields and SQL requests are well designed. A lighter worker in the same scenario is estimated at about 150 MB. Odoo’s model assumes 20% heavy and 80% light requests, giving an approximate blended consumption of 0.32 GB per worker:

MacBook screen cleaner, monitor cleaner or screen cleaner spray for electronic devices with microfiber cleaning cloth
  • 20% × 1 GB = 0.20 GB
  • 80% × 0.15 GB = 0.12 GB
  • Blended estimate = 0.32 GB per worker

Nine workers therefore imply roughly 2.9 GB, which is why Odoo’s worked example for a four-CPU/eight-thread system serving 60 users estimates about 3 GB for Odoo itself. That number excludes the memory needed by PostgreSQL, the Linux kernel, the reverse proxy, cron activity, monitoring, backups, and filesystem cache. Provision additional RAM rather than allocating the entire VPS to Odoo workers.

Practical VPS starting points

The following profiles are conservative planning baselines derived from Odoo’s worker guidance. They are not official minimums, and a slow shared CPU, heavy reports, or poorly optimized custom code can require a larger machine.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
Situation Peak concurrency to model Suggested starting VPS Why
Development or demonstration Few users; no production SLA 1–2 vCPUs, 2–4 GB RAM, 30–60 GB SSD Enough for the threaded demonstration mode or a small test database; do not use this profile as a production guarantee.
Small production company Up to about 10 concurrent users 2 vCPUs, 4 GB RAM, 60–100 GB SSD/NVMe Allows roughly two HTTP workers plus cron while reserving memory for PostgreSQL and the operating system.
Growing installation About 30 concurrent users 4 vCPUs, 8 GB RAM, 100–200 GB SSD/NVMe Five HTTP workers plus cron fit below the CPU ceiling; extra memory absorbs database cache, reports, and jobs.
Busy single-server deployment About 60 concurrent users 4 vCPUs (eight threads in Odoo’s example), 8–16 GB RAM, 160 GB or more SSD/NVMe Odoo’s example uses eight HTTP workers and one cron worker and estimates about 3 GB for Odoo; the remainder is for PostgreSQL and system headroom.
High concurrency or heavy analytics 100 or more concurrent users, or intensive imports/reports 8–10 high-performance vCPUs, 16–32 GB RAM, fast NVMe; evaluate a separate database host Worker arithmetic approaches the CPU ceiling quickly, while database and reporting contention become material. Validate with load measurements before committing.

Storage capacity in the table is a planning floor, not a backup allocation. Keep backups on separate storage or a separate location so a full disk or failed VPS does not remove both the live database and its recovery copy.

Choosing CPU, RAM, and storage on the provider page

CPU performance matters more than a large vCPU label

Odoo workers execute application and database work concurrently, so sustained single-core performance and predictable scheduling matter. Compare whether vCPUs are dedicated or heavily shared, the stated processor generation, and any sustained-use limits. A plan advertising many burstable vCPUs can perform worse than a smaller plan with consistent CPU access when imports or reports run.

Memory must cover more than workers

Reserve RAM for PostgreSQL shared buffers and connections, Linux and filesystem cache, the HTTPS proxy, cron jobs, monitoring, and temporary report or import peaks. If the VPS repeatedly swaps, requests may appear intermittently slow even when the nominal worker count looks adequate. Increasing RAM or reducing concurrent jobs is usually safer than simply adding workers.

SSD/NVMe I/O affects every transaction

Odoo and PostgreSQL perform frequent small reads and writes. Check the provider’s storage type, IOPS or throughput policy, durability, and whether snapshots affect performance. Size for the live database, filestore attachments, logs, temporary exports, and at least one local staging copy; place independent backups elsewhere.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Can Odoo and PostgreSQL run on the same VPS?

When one VPS is sensible

Yes. A single VPS is the simplest arrangement for a small installation. When no database host is specified, Odoo’s default local PostgreSQL connection uses a Unix socket. Keeping both services together avoids network latency and a second server to patch and monitor. Size the machine for their combined peak, keep PostgreSQL listening privately, and use a dedicated non-superuser PostgreSQL account for Odoo.

Signals that a separate database host is justified

Move PostgreSQL to a second VPS or a managed PostgreSQL service when database contention affects interactive requests, when you need independent scaling or maintenance, or when policy requires isolation. Odoo documents network connections and SSH tunneling as options. Secure the connection with encryption or a private network, restrict the database firewall to the Odoo host, and rotate credentials. Separating the database does not remove the need to size the Odoo VPS for workers, cron, proxy, and monitoring.

Should you use Docker?

Docker is a packaging and repeatability choice, not a substitute for capacity planning. Odoo’s official image documentation states that the image requires a running PostgreSQL server and demonstrates Odoo and PostgreSQL as separate containers with persistent storage for PostgreSQL data.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Docker is useful when

  • You want reproducible image versions and a clear separation between application and database services.
  • You already operate container backups, health checks, logging, image updates, and persistent volumes.
  • You need parallel staging and production environments with controlled configuration.

Docker does not solve

  • Insufficient CPU or RAM: containers still consume the host’s resources.
  • Data durability: bind mounts or volumes must be backed up and tested for restoration.
  • HTTPS, firewalling, PostgreSQL authentication, patching, or secret management.
  • Worker sizing, cron contention, slow SQL, or oversized reports.

Whether installed directly or in containers, keep PostgreSQL data on persistent storage, pin and update images deliberately, avoid exposing the database port publicly, and monitor container restarts, memory limits, disk usage, and backup completion.

Production reverse proxy and HTTPS requirements

Production Odoo should sit behind a web server that terminates HTTPS with a valid certificate. Odoo’s documentation specifically requires HTTPS termination to prevent eavesdropping on cleartext communications. Enable Odoo proxy mode so it correctly understands forwarded protocol and client information.

If live chat is enabled, configure the proxy to route websocket requests to the live-chat worker as well as ordinary HTTP traffic. A deployment that serves normal pages but omits websocket routing can make live chat appear randomly disconnected. Keep the Odoo application and PostgreSQL ports private; expose only the proxy’s necessary HTTPS endpoint and administrative access restricted by firewall rules.

A deployment checklist before you choose the plan

  1. Record peak concurrent users for the busiest hour, not merely total accounts.
  2. List enabled modules, custom add-ons, report types, imports, and scheduled actions.
  3. Estimate HTTP workers as ceil(peak users / 6), add a cron worker, and compare the total with (CPU * 2) + 1.
  4. Apply the 1 GB heavy-worker and 150 MB light-worker estimates, then reserve memory for PostgreSQL, Linux, proxy, jobs, and monitoring.
  5. Choose fast SSD/NVMe storage and calculate database, filestore, logs, snapshots, and backup growth separately.
  6. Decide whether one VPS is adequate or whether database isolation is worth the extra operational complexity.
  7. Install the multi-process production server, HTTPS proxy, proxy mode, and websocket routing if live chat is used.
  8. Use a non-superuser PostgreSQL account, private firewall rules, encrypted administration, and current Odoo builds.
  9. Test a restore, then observe CPU saturation, resident memory, swap activity, database latency, disk I/O, and request time during a realistic peak.

Diagnosing an undersized VPS

Requests are slow only during busy periods

Check CPU steal time and per-worker saturation first. On shared hosting, noisy neighbors or throttling can look like an Odoo problem. If CPU is consistently full and the worker count is already near the rule-of-thumb ceiling, move to faster or more vCPUs rather than merely increasing the worker number.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Memory usage climbs and the system swaps

Inspect PostgreSQL memory, report and import peaks, cron overlap, and attachment processing. Add RAM, stagger scheduled jobs, or reduce concurrency. A larger worker count without memory headroom can make the outage worse.

Pages work but live chat disconnects

Verify HTTPS proxy mode and websocket forwarding to the live-chat worker. Confirm that the proxy timeout and firewall permit the websocket connection.

The disk fills unexpectedly

Measure database size, filestore attachments, logs, temporary exports, and local snapshots separately. Expand storage or move backups off-host before the filesystem reaches capacity; PostgreSQL and Odoo can fail when there is no room for temporary writes.

How to compare VPS offers without being misled

Once your workload model produces a target size, compare plans on the attributes that affect Odoo rather than headline vCPU counts:

Attribute Questions to ask
CPU Are vCPUs shared, burstable, or guaranteed? What processor generation and sustained limits apply?
RAM Is the advertised memory dedicated, and can it be upgraded without rebuilding the server?
Storage Is it SSD or NVMe? Are IOPS, throughput, snapshots, and durability documented?
Database placement Will PostgreSQL share the host, or is a private, encrypted network available for a separate service?
Backups Are backups automatic, retained long enough, stored separately, and restorable on demand?
Network What bandwidth policy, IPv4/IPv6 availability, firewall controls, and regional latency apply to your staff?
Operations Can you monitor CPU, RAM, disk I/O, and outages, and obtain console access for recovery?
