There is no single best VPN for every Linksys router. The right choice depends on your exact router model, hardware revision, firmware, and whether it supports the VPN client protocol your provider requires. ExpressVPN lists eight Linksys models for its router app, but says security updates for that firmware on all eight have ended. For many households, a VPN app on each device—or a VPN app built for the TV—is a better fit than installing VPN firmware on an older router.

Can you install a VPN on a Linksys router?

Sometimes. The Linksys name by itself does not establish VPN compatibility: a router must support the right kind of VPN client, and the provider must give instructions that match its model and firmware. A menu labelled “VPN” is not enough to prove it can connect to a commercial VPN service.

Providers describe different requirements. Proton VPN requires a router with an OpenVPN or WireGuard client. NordVPN says its router configuration may work when the router supports an OpenVPN client, and that setup varies with manufacturer and firmware. Neither requirement means every Linksys router supports those protocols as a client.

Which Linksys models does a provider explicitly support?

ExpressVPN’s Linksys router-app guide names these eight models: EA6200, WRT1200AC, WRT1900AC 13J1, WRT1900AC 13J2, WRT1900ACS, WRT1900ACS V2, WRT3200ACM, and WRT32X. Crucially, the same guide, updated October 5, 2026, says: “Security updates for ExpressVPN on all supported Linksys router models have ended.” The list therefore describes a configuration option, not a recommendation to buy or rely on one of these routers as a securely maintained new setup. Read the provider’s Linksys setup guide and model list.

For Proton VPN, the published router page gives setup examples for selected platforms—including AsusWRT, DD-WRT, OpenWRT, MikroTik, OPNsense, and pfSense—but does not provide a Linksys-specific guide. NordVPN’s router article explains its OpenVPN-client requirement and firmware-dependent setup, but its listed tutorial platforms do not name Linksys. Treat either as a possibility to verify for your exact router, not as confirmed support for the Linksys brand.

Do not confuse VPN passthrough with a VPN client

VPN passthrough generally lets a device on your network establish its own VPN connection through the router. It does not show that the router itself can connect to a VPN provider and route the household’s traffic through that connection. Likewise, a VPN menu may support a different type of VPN from the provider’s required OpenVPN or WireGuard client.

For example, the Linksys E9450 user guide describes its VPN menu as an L2TP service configuration. That description alone does not establish OpenVPN or WireGuard client support, or compatibility with a particular commercial VPN.

How to decide whether router-level VPN is right for you

  1. Identify the exact router. Check its model number and, where relevant, hardware revision on the label or in the router’s administration interface.
  2. Check the current firmware and its update status. Do not assume that a provider’s historical setup guide means the router still receives security updates.
  3. Match the provider’s required client protocol. Verify that the router firmware supports the required OpenVPN or WireGuard client, or the provider’s specific router firmware.
  4. Look for instructions for that exact model and firmware. If the provider does not document the combination, ask its support team before changing router settings.
  5. Consider the installation and recovery risk. ExpressVPN’s Linksys guide says its firmware installation replaces existing settings, including the Wi-Fi name and password. It recommends using the Linksys as a secondary router when another router is already in place. A secondary-router setup can make migration more contained, but it does not resolve the ended-security-update issue for the listed models.
  6. Decide whether you need every device routed together. Router setup is useful when you want one VPN connection for devices on that router’s Wi-Fi, but can mean less convenient server switching, fewer app features, and reduced speed on hardware with limited processing capacity.

If your Linksys does not meet the provider’s requirements, consider using VPN apps on your desktop and mobile devices, a VPN app supported by your TV, or replacement hardware explicitly documented as a VPN client for the protocol you need. Before choosing replacement hardware, confirm its security-update policy as well as protocol compatibility.

What does a router VPN cover on your Wi-Fi?

Devices connected through the VPN router can have their internet traffic routed through its VPN connection. That can include a desktop, phone, or smart TV, including devices that do not offer a suitable native VPN app. Proton VPN describes router setup as protecting every device connected to the home network; the important qualification is that this refers to traffic routed from the router to the internet.

A router VPN does not encrypt the connection between a device and the router, or local Bluetooth traffic. Keep Wi-Fi protected with a strong password and prevent unknown devices from joining. Proton VPN explains the coverage and local-network limits of router VPN connections.

Should you use the router, device apps, or a TV app?

Choose based on the devices you need to cover and the control you want. A router connection can serve multiple devices at once; individual apps may offer more direct device-level choices and provider features. A TV app avoids changing router firmware when the TV’s operating system is supported.

Approach Best fit What to verify
VPN on the Linksys router Several devices on one Wi-Fi connection, especially devices without a compatible VPN app Exact-model client support, protocol, firmware security status, setup instructions, and router capacity
VPN apps on desktop and mobile Device-by-device control and access to features exposed in the provider’s apps Supported operating systems and the provider’s current app features
VPN app on the TV A smart TV whose operating system has a compatible provider app The specific TV platform and the chosen provider’s current device-support list

TV support differs by platform and provider. NordVPN lists native apps for Android TV, Amazon Fire TV, and Apple TV; for Chromecast, Roku, and Samsung TV, it describes router or PC-sharing approaches. These are NordVPN’s support directions, not a guarantee about another provider or every device model. Check the TV’s operating system and the provider’s current official list. What to expect after choosing router VPN

  • Speed depends on the router. VPN encryption and routing can reduce performance, particularly on less capable hardware. The available provider guidance does not establish comparative speeds for Linksys models.
  • Changing servers may take more work. A router configuration can require manual changes rather than a quick selection in a device app.
  • App-specific controls may be absent. Do not assume router setup provides every feature available in a provider’s desktop or mobile app, such as per-device selection or split tunneling.
  • Streaming access is not guaranteed. A VPN connection through a router does not establish that a particular streaming service will work, or that all devices and regions will behave alike.
