There is no single agreed winner among the 2026 torrenting VPN comparisons reviewed here. RTINGS names Windscribe and Proton VPN as its top tested picks, while Top10VPN ranks Private Internet Access (PIA) first among 59 services it tested. Those are separate publishers’ assessments, not a shared verdict. Choose by checking the exact plan’s P2P rules, connection safeguards, port-forwarding needs, and privacy evidence—not by treating a ranking as a guarantee.
How the leading 2026 picks differ
The rankings do not use one common test or establish one best service for every user. RTINGS’ recommendations and Top10VPN’s ranking are useful starting points, but their conclusions reflect their own methods. Neither should be read as a promise of anonymity or a guarantee that every server and plan will work identically.
| VPN | What the reviewed source says | May suit you if | Trade-offs to check |
|---|---|---|---|
| Windscribe | RTINGS names it its best-tested torrenting VPN and reports a kill switch, port forwarding, and split tunneling. RTINGS’ torrenting VPN comparison | You value privacy features and port forwarding. | RTINGS says its free plan does not support torrenting. It also notes that paying for a full year upfront is needed for its price to align with some competitors. Verify current plan terms and billing before subscribing. |
| Proton VPN | RTINGS lists it as a second pick. Proton’s own page describes P2P, a kill switch, and port forwarding. Proton VPN’s P2P information | You want P2P support and port forwarding on a paid plan. | Proton says dedicated P2P servers for torrent downloads and uploads require a paid plan; its free plan does not include them. |
| Private Internet Access (PIA) | Top10VPN ranks it first among 59 VPNs tested and reports P2P support and port forwarding. Its listing says it was last tested in September 2026. Top10VPN’s torrenting VPN comparison | You want a service the reviewer found to support P2P broadly, with port forwarding. | Top10VPN says port forwarding is unavailable on US servers and flags US jurisdiction as a consideration. Rankings and prices are publisher-specific and can change. |
| Mullvad | RTINGS describes an anonymity-focused registration process and flat-rate pricing, but no port forwarding. RTINGS’ torrenting VPN comparison | You prioritize the registration approach and flat-rate pricing over port forwarding. | RTINGS says the lack of port forwarding may matter with older or poorly seeded torrents. |
Top10VPN reports testing 59 services and more than 30,000 total testing hours. The latter is an aggregate across its work, not the test duration for each VPN or a measurement of torrenting alone. For performance, look for the reviewer’s P2P method, baseline connection, protocol, region, and sustained transfer period; a ranking or speed result is not a universal prediction for your connection.
Check whether your exact plan permits P2P
Do not infer torrenting support from a provider’s general VPN service description. Check its current acceptable-use terms and the restrictions for the plan and server you intend to use. Independent reviews can help establish what a reviewer observed, but they do not guarantee that every server or plan behaves alike.

- Windscribe’s free plan does not support torrenting, according to RTINGS.
- Proton says dedicated P2P servers for torrent downloads and uploads require a paid plan.
These are specific policies for these providers, not evidence that all free VPN plans prohibit P2P or that all paid plans allow it.
What safeguards matter when a VPN connection drops?
A kill switch and leak protection are meant to reduce the chance that traffic leaves over your ordinary internet connection if the VPN tunnel fails. They reduce risk; they do not establish that no traffic can ever escape. Check how the app handles a dropped connection, enable its kill switch, and test the setup before relying on it for transfers.

Where your torrent client supports it, bind the client to the VPN network interface. Tom’s Guide explains that binding makes the client transfer only while connected through the selected VPN interface; exact menu names and behavior vary by client and operating system. A provider’s no-logs policy is not the same thing as independent verification, and a reviewer’s assessment is not a guarantee of complete anonymity. Consider the provider’s published policy and any independent audit or review evidence alongside the technical safeguards. Do you need port forwarding?
Usually, no. Port forwarding can allow incoming peer connections in some setups, which may help when a torrent has few reachable peers or when you seed. Proton describes its benefit this way: “Port forwarding allows direct connections, reducing wait times and increasing peers for faster torrenting.” That is Proton’s explanation of the feature, not an independently measured result. Proton VPN’s P2P information
Availability is provider- and server-specific. RTINGS notes that without port forwarding, access to peers can be limited on older or poorly seeded torrents; it is still an optional advantage rather than a universal requirement. PIA’s listing, for example, says forwarding is unavailable on US servers.

How to make a careful choice
- Confirm P2P eligibility. Read the current terms for the exact plan and server; do not assume the free tier has the same permissions as paid service.
- Check failure protections. Look for a kill switch and leak protection, then confirm the app’s behavior if the VPN disconnects.
- Review independent privacy evidence. Separate provider policy statements from independent audits or assessments, and do not treat either as proof of anonymity.
- Decide whether forwarding matters. If you often seed or encounter torrents with few reachable peers, verify the provider and server support it.
- Evaluate speed evidence in context. Prefer P2P tests that disclose region, protocol, baseline, and sustained transfer conditions; individual results can differ.
- Compare the actual subscription cost. Check the billing term, renewal price, and upfront commitment rather than relying on a promotional or publisher-specific price.
- Consider setup and account needs. Check device support, client-binding options, jurisdiction, and registration or payment choices where those details matter to you.
Is torrenting legal when you use a VPN?
BitTorrent is a file-sharing protocol; using it is not itself proof that the material being shared is unlawful. The legality of downloading or sharing particular content depends on that content and local law. RTINGS warns that copyrighted downloads can be illegal or lead to civil action depending on jurisdiction, and Tom’s Guide distinguishes the protocol from unauthorized sharing of copyrighted material. A VPN does not legalize infringement, prevent enforcement, or guarantee anonymity. The reviewed sources do not establish the law for a particular country or state, so check local law or seek qualified legal advice for a jurisdiction-specific answer.

Optional router-level VPN coverage
A VPN-compatible router can be an option if you want VPN coverage at the network level rather than configuring each device separately. No specific router model or performance was verified here. Before buying or configuring one, confirm that the router supports the VPN protocol and setup offered by your chosen provider and fits your network configuration.
