There is no single agreed “best” VPN for Australia: TechRadar and Security.org rank NordVPN first in their guides, while Top10VPN puts ExpressVPN first. Treat those as each outlet’s test-based judgments, not a universal result. The right shortlist depends on whether you need an Australian IP, want to connect from within Australia, care most about privacy transparency, or need a specific streaming service to work.
Start with where you are and what you need the VPN to do
“A VPN for Australia” can mean two different things: protecting a connection while you are in Australia, or using an Australian IP address while you are overseas to reach a local service. Those needs can call for different server locations and plans. Top10VPN’s Australia guide treats them separately, so decide which applies before comparing subscriptions: Top10VPN’s Australia VPN guide.
- In Australia: Check the provider’s apps for your devices, the locations you need to connect to, and the plan’s connection limits.
- Outside Australia: Confirm that the provider currently offers an Australian endpoint on the plan you intend to buy.
- For streaming: Check the exact service and country combination. Streaming platforms can block VPN endpoints, and compatibility may change.
How the leading Australia recommendations differ
Reviewers disagree on the overall winner, and their rankings reflect their own methods. Top10VPN says it tested 59 VPNs specifically for Australia and recommends ExpressVPN, NordVPN, Proton VPN, and Windscribe. It also reports more than 30,000 accumulated testing hours across its work; that figure is not limited to its Australia tests. These figures describe the outlet’s process, not a guarantee that a ranking will fit your connection or use case. Top10VPN’s Australia testing and recommendations.

Choose based on the factors that affect your use
Privacy transparency
Look for specific evidence, such as open-source apps, published independent audit results, and a clearly stated privacy policy. Proton says its apps are open source and that independent app audits are publicly available. Neither an audit nor a provider’s location or jurisdiction, by itself, proves that a service makes you anonymous. Proton VPN’s Australia page.
Free access versus paid locations
Tom’s Guide describes Proton VPN’s free plan as having unlimited data, but says its free server countries do not include Australia. That distinction matters if you specifically need an Australian IP: unlimited data does not mean access to every location or paid feature. Check the current plan details before relying on a free tier. Tom’s Guide’s free VPN guide.

Devices and household connections
Compare the provider’s apps with the devices you actually use, then check simultaneous-connection limits and router support. These vary by provider and plan. A VPN-compatible travel router may help route several devices through one VPN-enabled network, but support depends on the router and VPN configuration; no specific model is established here. TechRadar includes router support among the device options it discusses. TechRadar’s Australia guide.

Do not treat a review’s streaming recommendation as a permanent promise. Availability can change as services block VPN endpoints.
