TechRadar’s August 25, 2026 roundup names NordVPN its overall pick, with Proton VPN as another option to compare. Those are that publication’s recommendations, not a guarantee that any VPN will connect on your school’s Wi-Fi. Networks can block VPN traffic, and school rules may prohibit bypassing filters. Before choosing a service, check your school’s acceptable-use policy and compare privacy practices, device support, usability, and any relevant connection features.

Which VPNs are worth comparing?

TechRadar’s roundup recommends NordVPN overall. It cites privacy and security tools, speeds, and server locations in its overall assessment. Those judgments belong to TechRadar; they are not results from testing on your school network. The roundup also includes Proton VPN as a comparison candidate. Read TechRadar’s school Wi-Fi roundup.

Service What the cited sources establish What to check for your situation
NordVPN TechRadar names it the overall pick, citing privacy and security tools, speeds, and server locations. NordVPN describes obfuscated servers as a feature intended to make VPN traffic less apparent to some detection tools. TechRadar; NordVPN’s obfuscated-server explanation. Check current plan details and device support. Obfuscation is not a promise of access on a specific campus network.
Proton VPN The roundup includes it, and Proton describes its Stealth protocol as intended to evade detection and bypass many firewalls and VPN-blocking methods. TechRadar; Proton VPN features. Treat the protocol description as a vendor claim, not proof it will work on your school’s firewall.

Will a VPN work on your school’s Wi-Fi?

There is no universally reliable answer: a school network can block VPN connections, and compatibility depends on the network’s configuration. Obfuscation features are designed to make VPN traffic less recognizable to some blocking systems, but they do not guarantee a connection. NordVPN notes that manual packet inspection may still detect obfuscated traffic, and that websites may identify traffic coming from VPN-server IP addresses. Proton describes Stealth as designed to evade detection, but neither provider’s feature page establishes how it performs on a particular school network.

If a class resource appears to be blocked by mistake, ask a teacher or school IT staff about access rather than assuming a VPN is permitted. The available policy examples do not establish whether your school grants exceptions.

Check the school’s rules before connecting

Rules depend on the institution. New York City Public Schools’ published Internet Acceptable Use Policy prohibits using a website, application, or other method to bypass its network filtering. It also says that activity on Department Internet Systems is monitored and that users have no right to privacy on those systems. This is a policy for NYC Public Schools, not a nationwide rule. Read the rules that apply to your school or ask its IT staff. NYC Public Schools’ Internet Acceptable Use Policy.

What a VPN protects—and what it does not

An encrypting VPN can make the contents of traffic on the local Wi-Fi connection unreadable to someone monitoring that link. It routes your internet traffic through servers controlled by the VPN provider, however, so it shifts trust from the school or network operator to that provider. A VPN does not make you entirely anonymous, and some VPN apps may not encrypt all information. The Federal Trade Commission recommends reviewing an app’s permissions, terms, and privacy policy before using it. FTC guidance on VPN apps.

How to choose without assuming the network will cooperate

  1. Read the applicable policy. Look for rules about VPNs, blocked content, and school-managed devices; ask school IT if the policy is unclear.
  2. Decide what protection you need. If your concern is privacy on the local Wi-Fi link, understand that encryption protects that link while the VPN provider handles the routed traffic.
  3. Review the provider’s privacy terms and app permissions. The VPN app can handle your internet traffic, so check what data and permissions it requires.
  4. Compare practical fit. Check current price, supported devices, ease of setup, and the provider’s stated features. TechRadar’s roundup is an editorial comparison, not evidence of compatibility on your campus.
  5. Do not treat a failed connection as a reason to bypass policy. If an educational site should be available, request help or an exception through your school.
