Proton VPN is the clearest starting point if you need a Bosnia and Herzegovina IP address: its Bosnia page says it operates servers there and can assign a Bosnian IP. However, that does not make it automatically the best VPN for every reader. Someone connecting from Bosnia to a foreign endpoint may prioritize speed, streaming access, device limits or a different privacy model. The comparisons below separate those jobs, identify what is actually documented, and flag claims that need checking before you subscribe.

What “best VPN for Bosnia and Herzegovina” can mean

There are two different location questions:

  • Getting a Bosnian IP address: your traffic exits through a server in Bosnia and Herzegovina, so websites generally see that country rather than your real connection location.
  • Connecting from Bosnia to another country: you select a server abroad, perhaps to use a service available in that market, test a foreign website, or route traffic through a nearby endpoint.

A VPN app encrypts traffic between your device and the VPN server, then the server connects to the destination. This can hide browsing contents from some people on the same local network and replaces the IP address visible to websites. It does not make you anonymous: the VPN company becomes a party you must trust, websites can still identify logged-in accounts, and browser or device fingerprints remain possible.

For a Bosnian exit IP, Proton’s dedicated Bosnia and Herzegovina page is the relevant evidence. It says the service has servers in Bosnia and Herzegovina and can provide a Bosnian IP address. That is a provider statement, not an independent availability test, so check the live server list in the app before paying. Proton’s Bosnia and Herzegovina server information also describes encryption, a no-logs policy, supported apps, WireGuard and Secure Core as features.

Proton VPN: the documented choice for a Bosnian IP

What its Bosnia page actually says

Proton states that it has servers in Bosnia and Herzegovina and that users can obtain a Bosnian IP address. The page presents this as a way to access regional services, protect traffic and bypass some regional blocks. Those are the provider’s claims; server load, routing and whether a particular website accepts the address can vary.

The same page lists apps for common desktop and mobile platforms and describes WireGuard support, encryption, a strict no-logs policy and Secure Core routing. Treat each as a feature to verify in the current app and privacy documentation rather than as a guarantee of speed or anonymity. See the provider’s Bosnia and Herzegovina details.

Free versus Plus

Proton’s plan information says the Free tier includes unlimited data and one simultaneous device. It lists free servers in the Netherlands, Japan, Romania, Poland, Norway, Switzerland, Singapore, Mexico, Canada and the United States. Bosnia and Herzegovina is not in that list, so installing the free app does not by itself give you a Bosnian exit IP.

The same plan page lists Plus with up to ten simultaneous devices and premium features including streaming, P2P and Secure Core. It also advertises more than 20,000 servers in more than 140 countries. These figures and feature allocations can change; confirm them on the plan page and in the checkout flow. Review Proton’s current plan descriptions.

When Proton is a sensible fit

  • You specifically need a Bosnia and Herzegovina location and the live server list shows it on your account.
  • You want a free trial of VPN behavior and can work with one device and a non-Bosnian free location.
  • You value open documentation about privacy, jurisdiction and audits and are willing to inspect those materials rather than rely on a marketing slogan.

NordVPN and ExpressVPN: useful comparison context, not Bosnia speed rankings

A Tom’s Guide comparison published October 8, 2026 reported results from its own testing. NordVPN recorded 1,427 Mbps in its local test, compared with 1,177 Mbps for ExpressVPN. In a US-to-UK test, ExpressVPN recorded 1,117 Mbps and NordVPN 939 Mbps. The tests were not run from Bosnia and Herzegovina, and the article does not establish your ISP, device, route or time-of-day results. Use the numbers to understand that performance can change by route, not to declare a Bosnia winner. Read the test methodology and figures.

The same comparison said NordVPN was more consistent across its streaming test suite, while ExpressVPN’s apps were simpler to navigate. Those are the publication’s observations under its conditions; streaming catalogs and app interfaces can change by platform and date.

Reported audit history

That comparison reported a Deloitte audit for NordVPN completed in February 2026 and a KPMG audit for ExpressVPN completed in June 2025. An audit date is not a permanent certification of every current feature. Before subscribing, read the provider’s latest audit scope, findings and privacy policy, including what information is retained and for how long.

How to choose a VPN for use in Bosnia and Herzegovina

1. Confirm the location you need

Open the provider’s server list and search for “Bosnia and Herzegovina” if you need a Bosnian IP. Do not infer location availability from a large global server count. If your goal is a foreign service, choose the country in which that service operates and compare nearby alternatives when latency matters.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

2. Match the plan to your devices

Count phones, computers, tablets, televisions and routers that may be connected at the same time. Proton’s published limits are one simultaneous device on Free and up to ten on Plus. A plan that looks inexpensive can become unsuitable if you must disconnect devices or buy additional accounts. Read whether a “device” means a registered installation or an active connection, and check router support separately.

3. Read the privacy evidence

Look for a specific logging policy, the company’s jurisdiction, open-source app components and an independently conducted audit whose scope is available. Proton’s selection guidance recommends evaluating trust, no-logs language, jurisdiction, open-source status and audits together rather than treating any single item as proof of perfect privacy. Use this privacy-selection checklist as a starting point.

4. Treat streaming access as changeable

Streaming companies routinely block VPN addresses and may vary results by app, browser, server and account region. A provider’s statement that it supports streaming is not a permanent guarantee. Test the exact service, device and country you care about during the refund period, following both companies’ terms.

5. Compare total subscription terms

  • Length of the initial term and the renewal price.
  • Whether the displayed amount is monthly billing or the total paid upfront.
  • Refund window and exclusions.
  • Regional taxes, currency conversion and payment method.
  • Features included at each tier, especially streaming, P2P, Secure Core and simultaneous connections.

Promotional pricing is not an evergreen price. A dated comparison page listed two-year monthly figures of $3.49 for NordVPN, $2.99 for Proton VPN and $3.49 for ExpressVPN. Those are historical page figures, not a current offer or renewal quote. Confirm the final checkout total and renewal terms immediately before payment.

How to get a Bosnian IP address with a VPN

  1. Install the official app. Download the provider’s current Windows, macOS, Linux, Android or iOS application from its official site or the platform’s verified app store. Avoid modified installers and browser extensions that do not provide a full-device tunnel.
  2. Sign in and inspect the plan. If you are using a free tier, check its country list first. Proton’s documented free list does not include Bosnia and Herzegovina.
  3. Search for Bosnia and Herzegovina. Open the location list, select a Bosnian server and wait for the status to show Connected. If no Bosnian location appears, do not assume that a nearby country will provide a Bosnian IP.
  4. Verify the result. Visit an IP-checking service and confirm that the detected country is Bosnia and Herzegovina. A website can still use account, cookie or GPS data that points elsewhere.
  5. Test the required website. Sign out or use a private browser window if the service cached your former location. If access fails, try another server in the same country, then check the service’s VPN policy.
  6. Disconnect when finished. Some banking, government or fraud-prevention systems may challenge a changed IP. Keep the VPN off when a service requires your normal network identity, and follow its verification process rather than repeatedly switching servers.

How to connect from Bosnia to another country

  1. Choose the destination country based on the service or website you need, not simply the nearest map point.
  2. Connect to one server and record the site’s behavior, approximate latency and whether video playback works.
  3. If the route is slow, test a second server in the same country and one nearby country. Congestion and peering can matter more than geographic distance.
  4. For ordinary browsing or public Wi-Fi, prefer a stable nearby endpoint. For location-specific access, keep the endpoint in the required country even if another route is faster.

No Bosnia-specific independent speed, latency, streaming or reliability measurements were established for this comparison. Your ISP, Wi-Fi quality, device, VPN protocol, server load and destination all affect the result.

Security and privacy settings worth checking

Use a modern protocol

Where available, select WireGuard or another current protocol recommended by the provider. Keep the app updated so protocol and security fixes are applied. If a network blocks one protocol, use the provider’s documented fallback rather than downloading an unofficial configuration.

Enable a kill switch for sensitive sessions

A kill switch blocks traffic if the encrypted tunnel drops. Test it deliberately: connect, enable the setting, briefly disable the VPN connection and confirm that applications lose network access. Some apps offer separate behavior for trusted networks, so review those exceptions.

Decide whether split tunneling is appropriate

Split tunneling sends selected apps outside the VPN. It can help with local printers, banking or latency-sensitive games, but excluded traffic will not receive VPN protection or the VPN IP. Keep sensitive browsers and communications inside the tunnel unless you have a specific reason to exclude them.

Do not confuse VPN encryption with complete privacy

A VPN does not stop phishing, malware, weak passwords, tracking cookies or an account provider from seeing activity tied to your login. Pair it with HTTPS, multifactor authentication, software updates and sensible browser privacy controls.

Common problems and fixes

The app shows no Bosnian server

Check that you are not viewing a free-tier list, update the app, sign out and back in, and confirm the provider’s current location page. Proton’s free country list excludes Bosnia and Herzegovina, so a paid location may be required. If the location is absent from the paid account too, availability may have changed.

A website still detects your old country

Disconnect and reconnect, clear that site’s cookies, restart the browser and check for DNS or WebRTC leaks. Mobile apps may use GPS or account-region data independently of the IP address. Do not attempt to defeat a service’s access controls in violation of its terms.

Video is slow or blocked

Test another server in the same country, switch between the provider’s supported protocols, and use a wired or stronger Wi-Fi connection. If the service blocks the provider’s address range, the VPN may simply be incompatible with that service at that time.

Calls or games become unstable

Compare a nearby endpoint with the required foreign endpoint, stop background downloads and check whether split tunneling is sending the application outside the tunnel. A VPN adds an extra route; lower latency is not guaranteed.

Banking or government sites trigger extra verification

That can be a normal fraud-control response to a new IP or country. Use the site’s approved verification method, and consider accessing the service without the VPN if its rules require your ordinary connection.

Is a VPN legal in Bosnia and Herzegovina?

The available provider material states that VPN use is legal in Bosnia and Herzegovina, but no official government or authoritative legal source was established for this article. Treat that statement as a provider claim, not definitive legal advice. Regardless of local rules, illegal activity remains illegal when routed through a VPN, and workplace, school, banking and streaming terms can impose additional restrictions. For a binding answer about a particular activity, consult a qualified local lawyer or an official government source.

Decision checklist before you subscribe

  • Do you need a Bosnian IP, or only a foreign endpoint from a Bosnian connection?
  • Does the exact plan show the country you need?
  • How many simultaneous devices will be active?
  • What does the current privacy policy say about logs, jurisdiction and data requests?
  • Can you read the latest independent audit and its scope?
  • Have you checked renewal pricing, taxes, refund terms and the upfront total?
  • Can you test your actual ISP, device and streaming or work services during the refund period?

Bottom line for 2026

If the deciding requirement is a Bosnian exit IP, Proton VPN has the clearest documented fit because its Bosnia and Herzegovina page explicitly advertises servers there. Its free tier is not a shortcut to that location: the published free-country list does not include Bosnia, and Free is limited to one simultaneous device. For a household, Plus lists up to ten devices and additional features, subject to current plan terms.

If you are connecting from Bosnia to another country, compare endpoint availability, privacy evidence, device limits, streaming needs and the full subscription cost instead of choosing solely by brand or a global server count. NordVPN and ExpressVPN performance figures reported by Tom’s Guide can illustrate route differences, but they are not measurements of Bosnian connections. Recheck every location, feature, price and legal assumption at checkout and before relying on the service for an important task.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can Proton VPN Free give me a Bosnian IP address?

Not according to its published free-location list. The list names ten countries and does not include Bosnia and Herzegovina; the Bosnia location therefore needs to be confirmed on an eligible plan.

How can I check that my VPN address is really in Bosnia and Herzegovina?

Connect to the Bosnian server, then use an IP-location checker and confirm the detected country. Also remember that cookies, account settings and GPS can reveal a different location to individual apps.

Are the NordVPN and ExpressVPN speed numbers Bosnia-specific?

No. The figures come from Tom’s Guide tests under its own local and US-to-UK conditions. They do not measure an ISP, device or route from Bosnia and Herzegovina.
