Among the provider figures reviewed for 2026, NordVPN advertises the most extensive country coverage: servers in 167+ countries. Proton VPN lists 149 countries and ExpressVPN 113. These are company-published claims, not results from a standardized independent count; country totals alone also do not tell you which VPN is best for speed, privacy, or a particular use.
VPN server-country counts compared
The figures below are provider claims reviewed in 2026. They can change, and the companies do not publish a shared method for counting countries and territories.
| VPN provider | Advertised countries | Other network figure |
|---|---|---|
| NordVPN | 167+ (NordVPN support, 2026) | Over 8,400+ servers (NordVPN support, 2026); its locations page separately lists 225 locations |
| Proton VPN | 149 (Proton VPN server-page search result, 2026) | 17,985 Plus servers (same search result) |
| ExpressVPN | 113 (ExpressVPN support, updated August 19, 2026) | 214 server locations (ExpressVPN support, updated August 19, 2026) |
On these reported country figures, NordVPN is the leader. The comparison is not a like-for-like audit: Proton VPN’s count comes from a search result because its server page could not be opened for direct review, while the other values are reported on provider support or server-list pages. Check each provider’s live list for the latest availability before subscribing.

A country count describes the number of countries a provider says it covers. A location count can include multiple cities or server sites within a country, and a server count describes infrastructure rather than geographic reach. For example, ExpressVPN reports 113 countries and 214 locations; NordVPN separately lists 225 locations. Neither location figure should be mistaken for a country total.

- Next-Gen Gigabit Wi-Fi 6 Speeds: 2402 Mbps on 5 GHz and 574 Mbps on 2.4 GHz bands ensure smoother streaming and faster downloads; support VPN server and VPN client¹
- A More Responsive Experience: Enjoy smooth gaming, video streaming, and live feeds simultaneously. OFDMA makes your Wi-Fi stronger by allowing multiple clients to share one band at the same time, cutting latency and jitter.²
- Expanded Wi-Fi Coverage: 4 high-gain external antennas and Beamforming technology combine to extend strong, reliable, Wi-Fi throughout your home.
- Improved Battery Life: Target Wake Time helps your devices to communicate efficiently while consuming less power.
- Improved Cooling Design: No heat ups, no throttles. A larger heat sink and redefined case design cools the WiFi 6 system and enables your network to stay at top speeds in more versatile environments.
What a virtual server location means
A VPN app’s selected country does not always identify where the physical server hardware sits. NordVPN distinguishes physical servers, whose hardware is in the selected country or city, from virtual servers that provide access to locations where physical infrastructure is limited. ExpressVPN says most of its locations have the physical server and registered IP address in the same country, but some are virtual: the IP is associated with the selected country while the hardware is elsewhere.
This distinction matters if physical routing geography is important to you. A country appearing in an app is not, by itself, proof that the hardware is physically there.

How to choose based on the coverage you need
- Check the specific destination. A large overall total is less useful than access to the particular country you need. Confirm that it appears in the provider’s current app or location list.
- Check whether the location is physical or virtual. If this matters for latency, routing, or another practical reason, look for the provider’s location details rather than relying only on the country selector.
- Compare the features that affect your use. Country coverage does not establish speed, privacy practices, protocol or device support, streaming access, or performance from your current location. Assess those separately for your needs.
What the country-count ranking can—and cannot—tell you
The reviewed figures support a narrow conclusion: NordVPN advertises the highest country count among these providers, followed by Proton VPN and ExpressVPN. They do not establish that the first-ranked service is fastest, safest, or most reliable for an individual user. The provider pages also do not establish a common definition for which countries and territories count, so the figures are best treated as advertised network coverage rather than independently verified, directly comparable statistics.
