Choose Fighter if sword-and-shield melee sounds fun, Strider if you want agile daggers plus a bow, or Mage if spellcasting is the main reason you want to play. There is no objectively best starting vocation: you can change later, and your vocation progress and purchased augments remain with your character.

The short answer: pick the combat rhythm you will enjoy

Your first vocation in Dragon’s Dogma: Dark Arisen is a playstyle choice, not a permanent build commitment. The three choices available at the start are Fighter, Strider and Mage. Their weapons and ranges create very different moment-to-moment decisions, so the best choice is the one whose actions you are most eager to repeat for several hours.

Fighter keeps you in close range with a sword and shield. Strider alternates between quick dagger attacks and aimed bow shots. Mage uses a staff and centers combat on spells. Available evidence does not establish that one of these is universally easier, stronger or better for beginners, so treat tier-list claims as personal preference rather than a rule.

The official Capcom overview explains that changing class preserves progress made in a vocation and keeps purchased augments. That reversibility removes most of the pressure from the opening decision. You can learn what type of combat suits you, then move to another vocation when the game makes more options available.

What the three starting vocations actually play like

Fighter: direct, close-range sword-and-shield combat

Fighter is the clearest match for players who want to stand near an enemy, attack with a sword and use a shield as part of a more defensive approach. The game-specific vocation guide describes its focus as close-range attacks and guarding. You are choosing a deliberate melee role rather than a ranged or spell-focused one.

  • Choose Fighter if: you like reading an enemy at close distance, blocking or guarding, and committing to physical attacks.
  • Expect: most of your decisions to happen inside an opponent’s attack range.
  • Do not choose it solely because: you assume it is automatically the safest or easiest starting class; the available sources do not provide a controlled difficulty comparison.

Fighter is a good first test of whether you enjoy the game’s melee timing. If you find yourself wishing you could attack from farther away or move more rapidly between targets, switching later is a normal part of the system rather than evidence that you chose incorrectly.

Strider: mobile daggers with an aimed bow option

Strider combines daggers for close work with a bow for aimed ranged attacks. That combination makes it the most immediately flexible of the three starting choices: you can stay near a target when an opening appears, then create distance and use the bow when positioning favors it. The guide also characterizes Strider by mobility.

  • Choose Strider if: you want to change range frequently instead of committing to only melee or only magic.
  • Expect: a faster, more mobile rhythm in which positioning and target selection matter as much as simply guarding.
  • Remember: having both daggers and a bow does not mean every encounter must be solved by constantly swapping; use the range that fits the situation and your preference.

Strider is often the natural recommendation for a player who cannot decide between a melee and ranged identity. It is still a preference match, not a proven universal best choice.

Mage: staff-based spellcasting

Mage is the starting vocation for players who specifically want a magic-focused role. Its defining equipment is a staff, and its combat identity is spellcasting rather than sword attacks or bow work. Choose it because the idea of managing spells is appealing, not because you have been told magic is mandatory for success.

  • Choose Mage if: you want your main contribution to come from casting spells with a staff.
  • Expect: a role centered on magical actions rather than the Fighter’s guard-focused melee or Strider’s dagger-and-bow movement.
  • Reconsider later if: you discover that you prefer the immediacy of weapon attacks; the vocation system allows that change.

The sources do not provide a beginner-difficulty ranking for Mage against Fighter or Strider. A player who enjoys spellcasting will usually get more value from choosing Mage immediately than from selecting a different vocation because of an unsupported claim that it is easier.

How the nine vocations are organized

Capcom describes Dragon’s Dogma: Dark Arisen as having nine vocations, a count also shown on the publisher’s Steam listing. The starting trio is distinct from the six that become available later. A secondary vocation guide groups those six as three advanced vocations and three hybrid vocations.

Vocation When it is available Evidence-backed identity Best selection question
Fighter Starting choice Sword and shield; close-range, defensive approach Do I want guarded melee?
Strider Starting choice Daggers and bow; melee, aimed range and mobility Do I want to switch range and stay mobile?
Mage Starting choice Staff-based spellcasting Do I specifically want magic?
Warrior Available after the later unlock conditions Advanced vocation; detailed weapon description is not stated in the cited summary Am I ready to examine a more specialized option?
Ranger Available after the later unlock conditions Advanced vocation; detailed weapon description is not stated in the cited summary Do I want to move beyond the starting-vocation set?
Sorcerer Available after the later unlock conditions Advanced vocation; detailed weapon description is not stated in the cited summary Would a later, more specialized magic role interest me?
Mystic Knight Available after the later unlock conditions Hybrid vocation; detailed weapon description is not stated in the cited summary Do I want to investigate a hybrid role?
Assassin Available after the later unlock conditions Hybrid vocation; detailed weapon description is not stated in the cited summary Would combining elements of different roles appeal to me?
Magick Archer Available after the later unlock conditions Hybrid vocation; detailed weapon description is not stated in the cited summary Do I want a later hybrid rather than a starting basic vocation?

The table separates confirmed classification from assumptions. The cited material identifies the names and advanced/hybrid grouping of the six later vocations, but the summary used here does not establish a complete weapon-by-weapon description for each one. Use the in-game vocation information when you reach the unlock point instead of treating an unsupported list of abilities as fact.

When do the other six vocations unlock?

The secondary guide gives three conditions for access to Warrior, Ranger, Sorcerer, Mystic Knight, Assassin and Magick Archer:

  1. Reach level 10.
  2. Reach Gran Soren.
  3. Have enough Discipline available to spend when changing vocation.

These are cumulative conditions. Reaching level 10 alone does not make every later vocation available, and arriving at Gran Soren without Discipline to spend does not remove the resource requirement. Because the opening three vocations are available before this point, you can begin with the combat style you like and use the early game to learn what you want from a later advanced or hybrid option.

Can you change vocation later?

Yes. The class system is designed for experimentation. Capcom states that your character retains progress made in a vocation and keeps purchased augments after switching. In practical terms, trying Fighter and later moving to Strider or Mage does not erase the vocation progress you already earned in Fighter.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

That statement is specific: it confirms vocation progress and purchased augments. It does not promise that every skill or equipped ability from one vocation remains usable in every other vocation. Treat abilities as vocation-dependent unless the game explicitly makes them available after a change.

The safest approach is to switch because you want a different combat rhythm, not because you fear that your opening choice has permanently damaged the character. Keep notes about which attacks and ranges you enjoy, then use that experience to choose a later vocation with more confidence.

Do vocations affect your stats?

They do. Capcom says that the stats gained per level vary by class, so the vocation active during leveling influences how your attributes grow. Capcom also warns that stat boosts decrease after level 100. In the August 8, 2012 article “Dragon’s Blogma: A Touch of Class”, Capcom author GregaMan writes: “Regardless of class, stat boosts decrease per level after Level 100, so be sure to consider that when mapping out a leveling strategy.”

The detailed guide includes vocation-by-vocation growth tables and describes the first ten levels as an introductory stretch before more strategic leveling. Those numerical tables are a secondary guide’s data, not figures presented as Capcom’s own tables. If you are planning a highly optimized long-term stat profile, consult the table for the exact level bands and record which vocation is active during the levels you care about.

Should a first-time player min-max level growth?

Usually, no. Stat planning is an optional project for players who enjoy optimization. It is not a prerequisite established by the sources for completing the game, and the ability to change vocations means you are not forced to predict your ideal final build before understanding the combat.

A sensible progression is to spend the opening levels learning the controls and identifying your preferred range. Once you have access to Gran Soren and the later vocation choices, decide whether the stat-growth differences justify a deliberate plan for your goals. If they do, use the guide’s growth tables as a planning reference and keep Capcom’s level-100 warning in mind. If they do not, continue with the vocation whose attacks you enjoy.

  • Choose enjoyment first when this is your first playthrough or you are still learning the game.
  • Plan levels deliberately only when a specific long-term stat target matters to you.
  • Do not confuse optimization with necessity: different growth patterns are a customization concern, not proof that one starting vocation is mandatory.

A decision framework you can use before creating your character

Answer these questions in order:

  1. What weapon image sounds most fun? Pick sword and shield for Fighter, daggers and a bow for Strider, or a staff for Mage.
  2. Where do you want to stand? Fighter emphasizes close range, Strider can move between close and aimed range, and Mage is built around spellcasting.
  3. How much switching do you want during a fight? Strider is the explicit starting option that combines melee and ranged weapons; Fighter and Mage present more focused identities in the supplied descriptions.
  4. Do you care about long-term stat optimization now? If not, do not let growth tables override a combat style you would rather play.
  5. Are you choosing based on an unsupported difficulty promise? If so, reset the decision around preference, because the available sources do not establish a controlled easiest-class comparison.

This framework produces a defensible choice without pretending that the game has one universal answer.

Common mistakes to avoid

Assuming the first vocation is permanent

The retained progress and augments make that assumption wrong. You can start with the style that appeals to you and change when your experience points toward another role.

Treating every ability as transferable

Capcom specifically confirms vocation progress and purchased augments, not unrestricted access to every skill. Check what the destination vocation supports after changing.

Calling one class objectively easiest

Fighter’s defensive approach, Strider’s mobility and Mage’s spellcasting suit different players. The cited material does not provide a measured beginner-difficulty ranking.

Planning a level-200-style build before learning the game

Stat growth varies by vocation and decreases after level 100, but that information is most useful when you have an optimization goal. It should not stop a first-time player from selecting the combat style they want to experience.

A practical first-playthrough plan

  1. Start with the weapon set you would most like to use. Select Fighter, Strider or Mage on that basis.
  2. Play enough early combat to evaluate the rhythm. Notice whether you enjoy guarding in melee, moving between dagger and bow range, or building your actions around staff casting.
  3. Keep your Discipline available for choices you actually want. The later vocations require Discipline when changing, in addition to level 10 and access to Gran Soren.
  4. Reassess after the unlock point. Compare the later advanced and hybrid names with your preferred role, then change if a different identity appeals to you.
  5. Only then decide whether stat planning matters. If it does, use the detailed growth tables and account for the post-level-100 reduction described by Capcom.

What is firmly established about the game’s vocation system?

Capcom’s 2012 article, “Dragon’s Blogma: A Touch of Class,” establishes the nine-class count, the ability to change classes, retained vocation progress and augments, class-dependent stat gains, and reduced stat boosts after level 100. Capcom’s Steam listing for Dragon’s Dogma: Dark Arisen also describes nine vocations, although the listing text does not provide a publication year.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The vocation names, starting trio, unlock conditions, basic/advanced/hybrid grouping and growth tables come from the Gamer Guides vocation reference. Its detailed class descriptions and judgments should be read as a secondary guide’s assessment. No cited source supplies a survey of player preferences or a controlled comparison proving that one starting vocation is easiest.

Bottom line

For a first playthrough, choose Fighter for sword-and-shield melee, Strider for mobile daggers and bow, or Mage for staff-based spellcasting. Pick the one whose combat loop sounds enjoyable, then change later if your preference changes. The system preserves vocation progress and purchased augments, so your opening choice is important for how you begin—not a permanent verdict on your character.
