Start with the settings that are easy to reverse: choose the correct audio and subtitle tracks, then test hardware decoding with the same file. Leave codec-forcing and cache values at their defaults unless a specific, documented problem requires a change. For privacy, understand what VideoLAN actually claims, what its statement excludes, and which controls belong to your operating system or app store rather than VLC.
Before changing VLC, identify your edition and preserve a way back
VLC preferences are not identical across Windows, macOS, Linux, Android and other builds. Labels, available acceleration backends and reset controls can change with the edition and version. The sources available for this guide do not establish a current, platform-by-platform preferences manual, so treat any menu name as something to verify in the VLC build you are using.
Open VLC’s preferences using the Preferences command in your edition. Desktop builds commonly put it under a Tools menu, while macOS builds commonly expose preferences from the VLC application menu; Android uses an in-app Settings screen. If your labels differ, use the preference search field or the help text in that build rather than assuming another platform’s path.
- Write down the original value before changing a setting.
- Change one setting at a time and test the same file, from the same location, after each change.
- Keep a known-good short video available for comparison.
- Use VLC’s reset-to-default option, when present, as the recovery step instead of changing several advanced values at once.
Hardware decoding: test it, but do not assume it is always better
VideoLAN advertises hardware decoding on most platforms, with software decoding available as a fallback when required. That is a capability statement, not a promise that every decoder, driver, device or file will behave the same way. Hardware decoding can reduce the work done by the CPU and may make difficult video smoother, but it can also expose driver or compatibility problems. Enabling it does not inherently improve picture quality.

VideoLAN’s Android guidance says that “Hardware decoding often provides better performance but is not supported on all devices.” On some older Android versions, software decoding may be the only supported option. A switch that exists in one Android release or device may therefore be absent or behave differently on another.
How to run a useful hardware-decoding comparison
- Open the VLC preferences for your exact edition and locate the video, input/codecs or hardware-acceleration setting. The wording and location vary by build; do not copy a path from a different operating system without checking.
- Record the current value. If it is set to an automatic or default mode, test that mode first rather than forcing a particular acceleration API.
- Play the problem file for several minutes with the current value. Note visible stutter, dropped-looking frames, freezes, audio-video drift and rendering artifacts.
- Change only the hardware-decoding setting to the alternate available mode, restart playback (or VLC if the build requests it), and use the identical file and playback position.
- Keep the option that gives reliable playback on that device. If neither mode works, restore the original value and investigate the file, driver, operating-system update or VLC version instead of changing codec preferences at random.

This comparison is a troubleshooting method, not a benchmark. The available VideoLAN material does not provide a performance percentage or a universal recommendation for one mode.
Wrong language or subtitles? Select the track before changing decoder settings
VLC supports a broad range of media and subtitle formats and can expose multiple audio and subtitle tracks. If a film starts in the wrong language, displays an unwanted subtitle, or appears to have no captions, first select the track embedded in that file or supplied beside it. A global decoder change is unlikely to fix a track-selection problem.

Choose an audio track
During playback, open the edition’s Audio menu and choose Audio Track (or the equivalent track selector), then select the language or description you want. On touch-oriented builds, the track controls may be behind the on-screen audio or subtitle icon. The exact label is edition-dependent, so verify it in your interface.
Choose or disable a subtitle track
Open the Subtitle menu and choose Subtitle Track, then select the intended language, an external subtitle file, or Disable. If several tracks have similar names, test them briefly because labels in a media file are supplied by its creator and may be incomplete.
These choices are normally per playback session or file context. Do not change global subtitle rendering, font or codec preferences merely because the wrong language was selected. If VLC cannot parse a particular subtitle file, confirm that the file format is supported and that the subtitle file is readable before pursuing advanced settings.

Advanced codec and cache controls: leave them alone unless you have a specific diagnosis
VLC exposes preferences for demuxers, codecs, network caching and other internals. They can look like performance controls, but there is no single safe value for every file, network, storage device and operating system. The available developer discussions, including older material from 2016 and 2020, warn that forcing codec preferences can break playback. Those discussions support caution; they are not a current consumer menu guide.

When not to change codec preferences
- Do not force a decoder simply because its name sounds newer or faster.
- Do not disable a codec globally to fix one damaged or unusual file.
- Do not copy a cache value from a forum post without matching its network type, file source and VLC edition.
- Do not change several decoder, output and cache options together; you will lose the ability to identify the cause.
If a specialist instruction requires a change
- Capture the current preference value and the exact symptom, including the file type and whether the source is local or streamed.
- Apply only the documented change for your VLC version and platform.
- Restart playback and test more than one file so that a one-off damaged file is not mistaken for a VLC problem.
- Revert the value immediately if playback becomes less compatible, then use VLC’s reset option if you can no longer identify the original setting.
The evidence does not establish a universally safe cache number or a cache setting that improves every stream. Treat cache tuning as a targeted support procedure, not a routine optimization.
Privacy: what VideoLAN says, and what that statement does not prove
VideoLAN’s features page uses the wording “No spyware, No ads, No user tracking.” That is VideoLAN’s product statement, not an independent privacy audit. It describes the project’s stated position; it does not by itself test every operating-system, distribution-channel or third-party component.

In a May 2025 change notice, VideoLAN policy wording says: “VideoLAN does not collect any statistics, personal information, or analytics from our users, other than built in mechanisms that are present for all the mobile or embedded applications in their respective main distribution channels.” The exception matters. The statement recognizes built-in mechanisms associated with mobile or embedded distribution channels, so it should not be read as a guarantee that no platform-level event, store measurement or system diagnostic can exist.
Practical privacy checks
- Install VLC from a distribution channel you trust and review the permissions shown by that channel and your operating system.
- On mobile or embedded devices, inspect the system’s privacy, diagnostics and app-permission controls; those are separate from VLC’s playback preferences.
- If a build offers account, credential or cookie handling for an embedded service, review those controls before signing in. VideoLAN’s privacy wording discusses such handling in the context of mobile and embedded applications.
- Do not assume that switching off one VLC preference disables operating-system logging, app-store analytics or network monitoring performed outside VLC.
- Keep VLC and the operating system updated through their normal trusted channels, because privacy and security behavior can depend on the complete software stack.
There is no evidence here that a particular playback switch turns tracking on or off. The prudent approach is to separate VLC’s stated collection policy from controls owned by the device, operating system and distribution channel.
Platform and version differences you should expect
A setting can have different names, defaults or availability on desktop and Android. Hardware acceleration may depend on a vendor driver or an Android release; a desktop build may offer several output modules that another build omits. Even the location of a track selector can change between a traditional desktop window and a touch interface.

Before following a screenshot or forum instruction, check three identifiers: your VLC version, your operating system and whether the file is local, removable or streamed. If a guide does not match those identifiers, treat it as background information rather than an instruction. The available sources do not establish current menu paths across all platforms.
A conservative settings workflow
- Identify the symptom. Decide whether the problem is wrong language or subtitles, stutter, visual corruption, a stream that will not start, or a privacy question. Each points to a different control.
- Check tracks first. Use the audio and subtitle selectors for language and caption problems. VLC’s broad format support makes this the lowest-risk first step.
- Test hardware decoding. Compare automatic or enabled decoding with software decoding on the same file and device. Keep the mode that avoids stutter and artifacts.
- Leave advanced values at defaults. Do not force codecs or invent cache numbers without a version-specific diagnosis.
- Review privacy at the correct layer. Read VideoLAN’s policy statement, then inspect mobile, embedded, operating-system and distribution-channel controls separately.
- Document the working state. Record the VLC version, platform and hardware-decoding choice so you can restore it after an update or on another device.
Troubleshooting by symptom

How to recover from a bad change
If playback became worse immediately after editing preferences, reverse the last change first. If you changed several values or cannot remember them, use the edition’s reset-preferences command, then restart VLC and retest the original file. Reapply only the low-risk track selection and the hardware-decoding comparison. Keep a note of the working configuration for future updates.
When a reset does not help, test a different known-good file. If that file works, the original media or subtitle file may be the issue. If every file fails, compare another VLC version or device and investigate the operating-system or driver layer before editing codec internals again.

Leave hardware decoding on its default or automatic behavior until a real playback symptom gives you a reason to compare it with software decoding. Fix language and subtitle selection through the track controls. Keep codec and cache preferences unchanged unless a current, version-specific support instruction identifies them as the cause. For privacy, rely on VideoLAN’s stated no-statistics/no-personal-information/no-analytics policy within its published scope, while remembering that mobile, embedded, operating-system and distribution-channel mechanisms are separate.
