The best vacation camera depends on what you want to photograph and how much gear you’re willing to carry. A compact zoom is a strong fit when you want framing flexibility in a small package; a fixed-lens compact favors simplicity and pocketability; and a mirrorless camera gives you more lens choices at the cost of a larger kit. For video, choose according to whether you need to film yourself, capture stabilized walk-around footage, or mount a rugged camera for action.

Which type of vacation camera fits your trip?

Camera type Best for Main trade-off
Compact zoom Travelers who want one small camera with flexible framing Less freedom to change lenses than a mirrorless system
Fixed-lens compact Street photography, everyday carrying, and a simple camera setup You cannot zoom optically or swap lenses; framing depends on the fixed focal length
Mirrorless system camera Travelers who want to adapt lenses to different subjects The body and lens together can be larger and heavier than a compact camera
Vlogging camera Self-recording and travel video that benefits from a screen you can see while filming Video features and stabilization vary by model
Gimbal camera Smooth handheld walk-around video Designed around stabilized video rather than an interchangeable-lens photo system
Action camera Rugged, mounted, or active-use footage Its wide-angle look is not ideal for every still-photo scene

For a current broad shortlist, RTINGS’ September 17, 2026 travel-camera guide names the Fujifilm X-T5 as its top travel camera, the Sony α6700 as a mid-range pick, the Fujifilm X-M5 as a compact mirrorless option, and the Canon R50 as a budget pick. Treat these as that guide’s category recommendations, not a universal ranking: the right choice changes with the lens you carry and the photos or video you want to make. DPReview describes a good travel camera more generally as small, versatile, and capable of good image quality.

Compact cameras: prioritize convenience or creative control

Choose a compact zoom for flexible framing

The Sony RX100 VII is a compact-zoom option to consider when you want reach and the ability to change framing without switching lenses. This format can be convenient on a trip where you want to move quickly between nearby details and distant subjects while keeping your camera setup small.

Choose a fixed-lens compact for a simpler carry

The Fujifilm X100VI takes a different approach: it has an APS-C sensor and a fixed 35mm-equivalent lens, so it gives up zoom flexibility. DPReview describes it as a 40MP camera with a 35mm-equivalent f/2 lens and in-body stabilization rated up to 6EV. Those are details reported by that guide; its stated availability concerns can change, so check current stock before choosing it.

  • Optical Zoom: 5x optical zoom with a 28mm wide angle lens for flexible framing indoors or outdoors

  • Rechargeable Battery: Included LB-012 lithium-ion battery charges in the camera over USB with the supplied adapter in about 2 hours; charge it for at least 4 hours before first use to maximize battery life

The Ricoh GR IV is another small fixed-lens option. National Geographic includes it in its street-photography category, making it a relevant candidate if you value a compact camera for everyday scenes rather than a zoom range.

Mirrorless cameras: compare the full kit, not just the body

An interchangeable-lens camera can adapt to different subjects, but the lens determines much of the system’s size, weight, and framing range. DPReview discusses the Fujifilm X-T50 with its 16–50mm f/2.8–4.8 kit lens as a travel-oriented combination. You can later choose other lenses for different needs, but each additional option adds something to carry.

The same trade-off applies to the Sony α6700: Digital Camera World notes that larger lenses can make the camera front-heavy. Before buying, consider the body and the specific lens you expect to use together. A camera that looks compact by itself may feel less convenient once paired with a large lens.

  • If you want one general-purpose lens, assess whether its focal-length range covers your usual subjects.
  • If you expect to photograph wildlife or distant details, check whether the lens you can carry provides enough reach.
  • If low-light scenes or portraits matter, consider the lens as well as the camera body; the body alone does not determine the whole system’s capabilities.
  • If portability is the priority, compare the packed camera-and-lens setup against a compact camera you would actually carry all day.

Travel video: pick for how you plan to film

For self-recording: a vlogging camera

RTINGS describes the Sony ZV-1 as a travel-vlogging camera with an articulated screen and detachable windscreen. It also notes that the Sony ZV-1 II has a wider lens but lacks optical stabilization. If you film yourself while walking, check stabilization and audio setup alongside the screen: a wider view can help fit more into the frame, but it does not by itself steady footage.

For stabilized walk-around footage: a gimbal camera

DJI identifies the Osmo Pocket 3 as a “1″ CMOS Pocket Gimbal Camera.” That makes it a distinct option for travelers whose priority is stabilized handheld video rather than choosing among interchangeable photo lenses.

For mounted or active footage: an action camera

GoPro’s official lineup includes HERO action cameras, 360 cameras, mounts, and accessories. These suit rugged or mounted capture, but an action camera’s wide-angle perspective is not a universal substitute for a compact or mirrorless camera when still-photo framing matters.

How to choose before you leave

  1. Decide what you will make most: still photos, video of yourself, smooth walk-around clips, or mounted action footage.
  2. Set a carry limit: include the lens, batteries, and any accessories you genuinely plan to bring, not just the camera body.
  3. Choose the framing trade-off: a compact zoom offers flexibility in a small package; a fixed-lens camera is simpler but limits framing; a mirrorless system lets you change lenses but expands the kit.
  4. Check the feature that matters most: lens reach for distant subjects, an articulated screen for self-recording, or stabilization for handheld video.
  5. Confirm the exact bundle and current availability: kit contents, stock, and camera lineups can vary by region and change over time. Check the retailer’s current listing before purchase.

What current camera guides establish

National Geographic’s May 18, 2026 compact-camera guide says its photo engineering team spent four months testing 26 cameras, weighing ease of use, size, shutter speed, and video features. That describes the scope and criteria of that guide’s testing; it does not establish a single best camera for every vacation or every traveler.

Rankings and availability are time-sensitive, and the cited guides do not make camera bodies directly interchangeable: a compact zoom, a fixed-lens camera, and a mirrorless kit solve different carrying and framing problems. Use category picks as a shortlist, then select based on the complete kit and your intended use.
