The most useful USB gadgets for an office desk solve a specific daily task: a USB-C hub adds connections, a document camera puts paper or small objects on a video call, and a webcam or meeting dock improves a video-call setup. These are different tools, not interchangeable upgrades. Start with the task you need to solve and check your computer’s ports before choosing a hub.

1. USB-C hub: add the connections your laptop lacks
A multiport hub is the most broadly useful choice if your desk needs connections for a display and other peripherals. HP’s 4K USB-C Multiport Hub lists USB-C 3.2 data ports, a DisplayPort 1.4 Alt Mode output supporting up to 4K at 60 Hz, and USB-C power pass-through up to 65 W.
Do not assume that a USB-C-shaped port on your laptop supports every hub feature. HP specifies that the host must support both USB Power Delivery and DisplayPort Alt Mode for the relevant power and display functions. Confirm those capabilities in your laptop’s specifications before buying.

2. USB document camera: show paper and objects clearly
A document camera is useful when a video call needs to show a physical page, sketch, or small object—not just your face. The manufacturer lists capture at up to 60 fps, a built-in microphone, webcam mode, physical focus and image-flip buttons, and an LED light.
That combination makes it more specialized than a conventional webcam: it is designed to capture material placed in view, while also offering webcam functionality. The listed features are manufacturer specifications, not independent performance testing.

3. USB webcam: keep a standard call setup simple
If you primarily need a camera for meetings, a USB webcam is a more direct fit than a document camera. Cisco’s Desk Camera 1080p data sheet describes USB-A and USB-C connectivity and two omnidirectional microphones with background-noise reduction.

The data sheet is older than the other cited product information, so verify that the model is currently available and compatible with your computer and meeting software before considering it. The manufacturer specifications alone do not establish comparative picture or audio quality.

4. USB-C meeting dock and camera kit: outfit a dedicated desk
A meeting dock is a larger-scale option for a desk that needs more than a small hub. Logitech’s Logi Dock Focus Room Kit page describes a USB-C docking station with display and peripheral connections, laptop charging up to 100 W, and a Brio webcam in the listed kit.
This can suit a dedicated meeting space where dock connections and a camera are wanted together, but it is a more involved setup than a compact USB accessory. Check current bundle contents before purchase rather than assuming every listing includes the same components.

How to choose without buying the wrong accessory
- Need more laptop connections? Consider a hub, then verify USB Power Delivery and DisplayPort Alt Mode support if you need charging pass-through or display output.
