The right underwater camera depends on what you want to capture and how deep you plan to go. For close-up stills and macro, the OM SYSTEM Tough TG-7 has the clearest fit; for high-frame-rate action video, consider the DJI Osmo Action 5 Pro. SeaLife Micro 3.0, GoPro HERO13 Black, and Insta360 Ace Pro 2 are additional candidates, but verify their current specifications and compatible housing details before choosing. These are feature-based options, not a tested performance ranking.
Choose by the footage or photos you want
Start with the images you expect to make, then check the depth rating of the camera body and any exact model-specific housing. A waterproof camera body and an optional dive housing have separate limits; a housing rating does not apply to the bare camera or to other cases.
| Camera | Best-fit use | What the available specifications establish | Depth and case notes |
|---|---|---|---|
| OM SYSTEM Tough TG-7 | Compact stills and macro | OM SYSTEM lists 12 MP effective pixels, RAW capture, macro modes, a 1 cm closest focusing distance in microscope mode, and 4K/30p video. | The body is listed as waterproof to 15 m. OM SYSTEM lists the PT-059 underwater housing as an accessory, but the product page cited here does not state its depth rating. OM SYSTEM specifications |
| DJI Osmo Action 5 Pro | Video-first action footage | DJI lists a 1/1.3-inch CMOS sensor, 4K (4:3) recording up to 120 fps, and approximately 40 MP still-photo output. | DJI lists 20 m without its Waterproof Case and 60 m with that case. DJI recommends using the case for long-duration underwater shooting or high water-impact pressure. DJI specifications |
| SeaLife Micro 3.0 | Dedicated dive-camera category | SeaLife’s catalog identifies the camera and underwater imaging accessories; DIVE Magazine also discusses it as a specialist dive-camera option. The cited material does not establish all current feature or battery details. | Confirm exact current depth rating and use requirements in SeaLife’s current product documentation. SeaLife catalog · DIVE Magazine guide |
| GoPro HERO13 Black | Action-camera workflow candidate | DIVE Magazine includes it in its scuba-camera discussion; the evidence cited here does not establish its current resolution or other detailed specifications. | Check the current camera and housing documentation for the exact depth limit and compatibility before use. DIVE Magazine guide |
| Insta360 Ace Pro 2 | Case-dependent action-camera candidate | A secondary comparison discusses a dive-case path, but detailed current specifications are not established here. | Verify exact case compatibility and depth rating against the manufacturer’s current manual before relying on this setup. Which option fits your priorities?
For close-up still photography: OM SYSTEM Tough TG-7
The TG-7 is the most clearly supported choice here for macro-oriented stills: its listed features include RAW capture, macro modes, and microscope-mode focusing as close as 1 cm. OM SYSTEM describes that close-focus capability in its product copy as focusing on subjects that are “even uncomfortably close.” Its body’s 15 m waterproof limit is a separate consideration from the optional PT-059 housing; check the housing manual for its own depth rating and instructions before planning deeper scuba use.
For action video: DJI Osmo Action 5 Pro
The Action 5 Pro stands out for its listed 4K modes up to 120 fps. Its depth figures are explicit and apply to different configurations: DJI lists the body to 20 m without the Waterproof Case and to 60 m with it. The maker recommends the case for long-duration underwater shooting or high water-impact pressure. Match the case to the exact camera model and follow its manual rather than treating a case as a generic accessory.

- 131ft waterproof camera: AKASO EK7000 is designed to withstand extreme environments, together with durable waterproof case. With the accessories, transform it for indoor and outdoor activities.
- Wireless wrist remote control sports camera: With a wrist 2.4G remote, you can capture the world in an all-new way. Controlling the camera, framing shots or recording video is convenient. (THE REMOTE IS NOT WATERPROOF)
- Built-in Wi-Fi, edit & share your action in minutes: Just download App(AKASO GO) on your phone or tablet and connect with this action camera. Wi-Fi signal ranges up to 10 meters. MicroSD card is not included.
For a dedicated dive-camera route: SeaLife Micro 3.0
The Micro 3.0 belongs on a shortlist if you want to consider a specialist dive-camera category rather than choosing solely among action-camera workflows. The cited catalog and editorial coverage establish it as a candidate, not a verified feature-by-feature comparison. Consult current SeaLife documentation for the depth rating, battery information, and included or compatible accessories relevant to your needs.
For other action-camera workflows: GoPro HERO13 Black or Insta360 Ace Pro 2
Both are candidates to investigate, not recommendations based on measured underwater performance. The evidence available here is thinner than for the TG-7 and DJI: consult the current manufacturer camera and housing documentation for the GoPro, and verify the precise dive-case compatibility and rating with the manufacturer for the Insta360 before purchase or use.

Check the complete underwater system before a dive
Depth safety and compatibility belong to the full camera-and-accessory setup, not just the camera name. Check the manual for the exact body, housing or case, and any accessories you plan to use.
- Confirm the configuration’s depth limit. Distinguish the body’s waterproof rating from the rating of a specific housing or case.
- Match the accessory to the camera model. A case that fits one camera, or a rating listed for one case, does not establish compatibility or safety for another.
- Check memory-card requirements. DJI lists recommended microSD card models for the Action 5 Pro; use the current specifications and manual for the exact setup.
- Review lighting and other accessories. For any camera, verify model-level compatibility and instructions for lights, mounts, and other gear rather than assuming a general underwater accessory will work.
- Recheck current documentation. Specifications and housing limits can vary by market, product revision, and conditions of use.
How to make the final choice
- Set your use case. Choose macro and still-photo flexibility, action video, or a dedicated dive-camera category as the priority.
- Set your planned depth. Compare it with the rating for the exact body-only or body-plus-housing configuration you intend to use.
- Verify the whole setup. Check model compatibility, memory cards, accessories, and operating instructions in current manufacturer documentation.
- Choose only among configurations you can verify. If a current housing rating or compatibility detail is not established, do not infer it from another model or from the camera body’s rating.
This shortlist is based on published features and documented candidate status, not side-by-side underwater testing; it does not establish a universal performance winner.
