For a new WordPress server in 2026, choose Ubuntu 26.04 LTS if your hosting provider, control panel, PHP and database stack, backup tools, monitoring agents, and plugins support it. It gives a longer standard-support runway than Ubuntu 24.04 LTS. Choose Ubuntu 24.04 LTS when your existing production workflow or a third-party component is certified only for 24.04, or when a slower, compatibility-first migration is more important than gaining newer lifecycle coverage.
There is no authoritative apples-to-apples benchmark showing that Ubuntu 26.04 runs WordPress faster than 24.04. The practical choice is therefore about support lifetime, compatibility, available server images, and migration risk—not an assumed speed advantage.

Canonical describes Ubuntu 26.04 LTS as a long-term support release. Its release notes state that it will be supported until April 2031, while Canonical’s 2026 lifecycle information lists standard security maintenance through May 2031. Because lifecycle pages and release-note wording can use different month boundaries, check the current Ubuntu release-lifecycle information when planning a retirement date.
Ubuntu 24.04 LTS remains a sound WordPress platform. Its standard maintenance ends on 31 May 2029, leaving several years of coverage, and optional Ubuntu Pro or Legacy coverage can extend that period. It is the safer choice when a control panel, deployment script, monitoring agent, backup product, or plugin has only been validated on 24.04.

What “best” means for a WordPress server
The best Ubuntu version is the one that keeps the complete WordPress stack supported for the life of the site. Ubuntu itself is only one layer. A production installation also depends on the web server, PHP runtime, database engine, kernel and system packages, control-panel integrations, backups, monitoring, object-cache services, and WordPress extensions.
Support runway
A longer standard-maintenance period reduces the number of major operating-system migrations you must schedule. For a new server deployed in 2026, 26.04 has the longer runway. A site launched on 24.04 can still be operated responsibly, but its standard-maintenance date arrives first and should be part of the capacity plan.

WordPress.org recommends Apache or Nginx and requires a server that supports PHP and MySQL. WordPress.org’s wording is that Apache or Nginx is the most robust and featureful choice, although any server supporting PHP and MySQL can run WordPress. Your decision must therefore include the exact PHP versions offered by the host, the database engine and version, the web-server integration, TLS automation, scheduled jobs, and any panel-specific extensions.
Operational risk
An operating-system upgrade can affect package names, service defaults, PHP modules, firewall rules, file permissions, cron jobs, and backup agents. A theoretically newer platform is not automatically the lower-risk platform. If a 24.04 image is documented and reproducible in your environment while 26.04 is not, 24.04 may be the better production choice until validation is complete.
Why Ubuntu 26.04 LTS is the default for a new WordPress VPS
Longer standard security coverage
Canonical lists standard security maintenance for Ubuntu 26.04 LTS through May 2031. That gives a server created in 2026 a longer period before a mandatory operating-system decision than Ubuntu 24.04. Ubuntu Pro can extend Expanded Security Maintenance to ten years when a site must remain on the release beyond standard coverage.

Suitable for a clean, validated deployment
A clean deployment lets you choose the supported PHP branch, database engine, web server, backup method, and monitoring stack together. You can test the complete combination before moving production traffic instead of inheriting years of package and configuration history.
What 26.04 does not guarantee
Ubuntu 26.04 does not guarantee faster page generation, lower latency, or higher request capacity. No authoritative comparative WordPress benchmark establishes those outcomes against 24.04. Performance depends on PHP workers, database queries, caching, storage, network conditions, theme and plugin behavior, and workload shape. Benchmark your own application if speed is a selection criterion.
When Ubuntu 24.04 LTS is the better answer
Your provider or panel supplies only a 24.04 image
Some hosting environments expose operating-system images and panel installers at different times. If your provider’s supported image, panel documentation, or automated provisioning script names 24.04 and does not list 26.04, use the supported image rather than forcing an untested installation.
A plugin or integration is certified only on 24.04
Security scanners, backup agents, monitoring collectors, payment integrations, and proprietary deployment tools can depend on specific system libraries. A WordPress plugin may work at the PHP level yet still rely on an external binary or agent that has not been packaged for 26.04. Keep the operating system aligned with the vendor’s documented support matrix.
You need a conservative migration schedule
For an established site with a narrow maintenance window, 24.04 can avoid an operating-system change while the current workflow remains healthy. Its standard security maintenance lasts until 31 May 2029. Put the later upgrade or Ubuntu Pro decision on the roadmap rather than treating the end date as a surprise.

Compatibility checklist before choosing 26.04
Confirm each item in a staging environment or with written support documentation. A single unsupported dependency can outweigh the extra lifecycle runway.
- Hosting image: Verify that your VPS or dedicated-server provider offers Ubuntu 26.04 LTS as a supported image, not merely a custom installation option.
- Control panel: Check the panel’s supported operating-system list and whether its installer configures the required PHP, database, web-server, mail, firewall, and certificate services on 26.04.
- PHP: Confirm that the PHP branch you need, plus extensions used by WordPress and your plugins, is available and receives security updates. Do not select an end-of-life PHP release merely because the operating system can install it.
- Database: Confirm the supported MySQL-compatible engine, version, character set, backup method, and upgrade path.
- Web server: WordPress.org recommends Apache or Nginx. Verify rewrite rules, FastCGI or PHP-module integration, HTTP/2 or HTTP/3 settings if used, and TLS automation.
- Plugins and themes: Review vendor compatibility notes for the PHP branch, database engine, image libraries, and any command-line utilities.
- Backups: Verify that the backup agent installs on 26.04, captures both the database and uploads, encrypts or protects off-site copies, and can restore to a clean server.
- Monitoring and security: Check agents for metrics, logs, intrusion detection, vulnerability scanning, and alert delivery. Test firewall and SSH-hardening automation.
- Automation: Run infrastructure-as-code, deployment scripts, scheduled jobs, queue workers, and maintenance scripts against a disposable 26.04 instance.
How to deploy a new WordPress server on Ubuntu 26.04 LTS
The exact package names and PHP versions depend on your provider and chosen stack. Use this sequence to validate the platform without assuming that desktop-oriented requirements apply to a server.
- Record the support matrix. Write down the provider image, panel version, PHP branch and extensions, database engine, web server, backup agent, monitoring agent, and WordPress version you intend to use. Keep the documentation or support confirmation with the deployment record.
- Create a staging VPS. Use the same Ubuntu image, CPU and storage class, network rules, DNS pattern, and automation that production will use. Do not test only on a developer laptop.
- Apply updates before installing applications. Log in through a temporary administrative account, update package metadata and installed packages with your normal change-control procedure, configure time synchronization, and reboot if the kernel update requires it.
- Install and configure the web stack. Deploy Apache or Nginx, PHP with the extensions required by WordPress, and the selected MySQL-compatible database. Set the PHP memory limit, upload limit, execution time, and worker counts for the workload rather than copying desktop defaults.
- Harden access. Use key-based SSH, disable unnecessary services, restrict administrative ports, configure a host firewall, and keep an emergency console or recovery path available through the provider.
- Set up TLS and the domain. Point a staging hostname to the server, issue a certificate through your approved automation, and verify redirects, renewal, HTTP headers, and mixed-content handling.
- Deploy WordPress and a representative data set. Import a sanitized copy of the production database and uploads. Test login, media handling, permalinks, scheduled publishing, search, forms, checkout or membership flows if applicable, and every critical plugin.
- Test operations. Run a backup, restore it to a separate instance, rotate logs, trigger monitoring alerts, reboot the server, and confirm that services return automatically. Test deployment and rollback scripts, not just the happy path.
- Measure the real workload. Exercise authenticated and anonymous traffic with production-like pages, queries, cron jobs, and cache states. Compare results with your current platform only if the test is repeatable and uses the same workload.
- Promote gradually. Lower DNS time-to-live before the move, schedule a content freeze if needed, take a final database backup, switch traffic, monitor errors and resource usage, and retain the old server until the rollback window closes.
Migrating an existing WordPress site from 24.04 to 26.04
Prefer a rebuild-and-cutover over an in-place release jump
A parallel 26.04 server makes rollback straightforward and exposes incompatibilities before they affect visitors. Build the new host, copy the site, validate it, and change traffic only after the restore and test process succeeds. An in-place operating-system upgrade can be appropriate for a tightly controlled environment, but it has a larger blast radius because the web stack and operating system change on the same machine.
Migration checklist
- Inventory PHP extensions, system packages, cron entries, systemd services, firewall rules, virtual hosts, certificates, DNS records, environment files, and writable directories on 24.04.
- Confirm that each item has a 26.04 equivalent or a documented replacement. Pay special attention to monitoring, backups, image-processing binaries, search services, and queue workers.
- Take and verify a full database and file backup. A backup is not a rollback plan until you have restored it successfully.
- Clone the database and uploads to staging, update configuration values for the new hostname, and prevent search engines from indexing the test copy.
- Run WordPress core, theme, plugin, media, scheduled-task, and administrator tests. Check PHP and web-server logs for warnings that do not appear in the browser.
- Schedule the cutover, freeze writes if your application requires consistency, take a final incremental backup, switch DNS or the load balancer, and watch logs, uptime checks, transaction tests, and resource graphs.
- Keep the 24.04 server intact but isolated until the agreed rollback period ends. If rollback is required, reverse traffic first and then reconcile any writes made on the new host.
PHP, database, and WordPress support considerations
Keep PHP and the database in support
WordPress.org warns that end-of-life PHP or database software may expose a site to security vulnerabilities. Ubuntu 26.04 does not make an obsolete PHP or database branch safe. Select versions that are supported by both the operating system and your WordPress extensions, and schedule upgrades before their own end dates.
WordPress has no Ubuntu-style LTS channel
WordPress does not offer a fixed long-term-support release model equivalent to Ubuntu LTS. WordPress.org officially supports the latest major WordPress release. Keep core, themes, and plugins updated through a tested staging process, and do not assume that an older WordPress version remains officially supported simply because the underlying Ubuntu release does.

Apache versus Nginx
Both Apache and Nginx are recommended server choices by WordPress.org. Apache can be convenient when a workflow depends on per-directory configuration, while Nginx is commonly selected for a reverse-proxy or FastCGI design. The correct choice is the one your team can secure, monitor, tune, and restore reliably on the selected Ubuntu release.

Canonical’s published comfortable-use figures for Ubuntu 26.04 Desktop are a 2 GHz dual-core processor, 6 GB of RAM, and 25 GB of storage. Those figures describe Desktop use; they are not universal minimums for a WordPress server.
Canonical does not publish one universal Ubuntu Server hardware minimum for WordPress because requirements vary by use case. A small brochure site, a busy WooCommerce store, a multisite network, and a site running search or image-processing workers have very different CPU, memory, storage-IOPS, and database needs. Size from measured traffic, PHP worker concurrency, database growth, media volume, backup retention, and headroom for maintenance—not from the Desktop figures.

Security and lifecycle planning
Use standard maintenance first
Install security updates promptly, remove unused services, restrict administration, protect backups, and monitor authentication and application errors. Standard Ubuntu maintenance is the baseline; it does not replace WordPress, PHP, database, plugin, or web-server patching.
Decide early whether Ubuntu Pro is needed
Ubuntu Pro is an optional lifecycle decision for organizations that must keep an LTS release after standard maintenance ends. For 26.04, Canonical states that Pro can extend Expanded Security Maintenance to ten years. For 24.04, Ubuntu Pro or Legacy coverage can extend maintenance beyond 31 May 2029. Verify current pricing, eligibility, and coverage for your provider before relying on it in a budget or compliance plan.

Put dates in your runbook
- Record Ubuntu 26.04’s standard-maintenance target of May 2031, while noting the release-note wording of support until April 2031.
- Record Ubuntu 24.04’s standard-maintenance end date of 31 May 2029.
- Record PHP, database, WordPress, theme, plugin, panel, backup, and monitoring end dates separately.
- Set reminders for staging validation, upgrade rehearsals, backup-restore tests, and the final migration decision.
Troubleshooting common selection and deployment problems
The provider does not offer Ubuntu 26.04
Use the supported 24.04 image or choose a provider that officially supports 26.04. Avoid an improvised image if it prevents security updates, panel support, monitoring, or reliable recovery.
The panel installs but a plugin fails
Check the plugin’s PHP requirements, required system libraries, file permissions, and command-line dependencies. Reproduce the failure on a staging copy, then either install the documented dependency, replace the incompatible extension, or remain on 24.04 until the plugin supports 26.04.
WordPress works but scheduled tasks do not
Inspect the system cron or service timer, the WordPress scheduled-task mechanism, PHP CLI configuration, environment variables, and filesystem permissions. Run the task manually, review logs, and confirm that the new host has the same timezone and network access as the old one.
The site is slower after migration
Do not attribute the change to Ubuntu alone. Compare PHP worker limits, opcode and page-cache state, database indexes and query plans, storage latency, DNS and TLS timing, external API calls, and plugin behavior under the same workload. If you cannot reproduce the comparison, you do not have evidence that 24.04 or 26.04 is faster.
A rollback is required
Reverse the traffic switch first, preserve logs from both hosts, identify writes made on the new server, and restore or reconcile data deliberately. Do not delete the old host until database consistency, media synchronization, certificates, and scheduled jobs are confirmed.
Decision guide
Choose Ubuntu 26.04 LTS when
- You are launching a new WordPress VPS in 2026.
- Your host and control panel officially support 26.04.
- Your PHP, database, web server, backup, monitoring, and deployment tools pass staging tests.
- Your plugins and themes have no unresolved 26.04 or PHP compatibility issues.
- You value the longer standard-maintenance runway through the early 2030s.
Choose Ubuntu 24.04 LTS when
- Your production image or panel is certified only for 24.04.
- A required plugin, agent, or deployment integration has not validated 26.04.
- You need to minimize change during a critical business period.
- You have a documented plan for the 31 May 2029 standard-maintenance date, including a future migration or Ubuntu Pro coverage.
Do not choose based on an assumed speed difference
Neither release should be selected on the claim that it is inherently faster for WordPress. Use a controlled, workload-specific benchmark if performance is decisive; otherwise, prioritize supportability and operational reliability.
