For a compatible television, soundbar or AV receiver, and Atmos source, connect the devices through their ARC/eARC-labeled HDMI ports, set HDMI eARC Mode to Auto, and choose Auto or Pass-Through for Digital Output Audio Format. Enable the TV’s Dolby Atmos compatibility switch if it has one. These settings only pass an Atmos signal that the source, TV, connection, and audio system can actually support; they cannot create Atmos from ordinary stereo or unsupported audio.
The recommended starting configuration
Menu names differ by manufacturer, model, region, and software version. Use this sequence as a practical starting point, then verify the exact behavior in the television and soundbar or receiver manuals.
- Connect the TV HDMI port marked ARC or eARC to the matching ARC/eARC port on the soundbar or receiver.
- Open the TV’s sound or expert audio settings and set HDMI eARC Mode to Auto when both connected devices support eARC.
- Set Digital Output Audio Format to Auto or Pass-Through, whichever the TV offers and the audio device documents.
- Turn on Dolby Atmos Compatibility (or a similarly named option) if the television provides it and the connected audio system supports Atmos.
- Play content that is explicitly supplied as Dolby Atmos and confirm that the soundbar or receiver reports the incoming format.
Samsung’s support guidance summarizes the same setup: “Set the HDMI e-ARC Mode to Auto and Digital Output Audio Format to Auto (or Pass-Through), and then activate Dolby Atmos Compatibility.” This is model-dependent guidance for using Dolby Atmos with a Samsung soundbar, not a universal menu path for every TV.

What each TV setting actually does
HDMI eARC Mode
eARC is the enhanced version of the Audio Return Channel. It lets a TV send audio from its built-in apps, tuner, or HDMI sources back to an external audio device over the HDMI cable. Setting eARC to Auto allows the TV and receiver or soundbar to negotiate the enhanced link when both endpoints support it. If either endpoint is ARC-only, the connection falls back to the capabilities of ARC and that equipment.
Samsung’s explanation of the feature and setup is available in its eARC support article.
Digital Output Audio Format
This control determines how the TV sends audio to the HDMI return connection or another digital output.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →- Auto: The TV selects a format it believes the connected device supports.
- Pass-Through: The TV sends the audio without converting or processing it, where the model permits this option.
- PCM: The TV decodes or converts audio to pulse-code modulation for broad compatibility. It can restore sound when an encoded format is rejected, but you should not assume that PCM preserves an Atmos bitstream.
Pass-Through may not appear until an external device is connected. Samsung describes these choices in its TV audio-format instructions. Exact codec handling remains model-specific.
Dolby Atmos Compatibility
Some televisions include a Dolby Atmos compatibility toggle. On supported Samsung sets, it allows the TV to receive Dolby Digital Plus streams carrying Atmos from an external source. The label, location, and behavior vary by model and brand, so enable it only when the connected audio device supports Atmos and the option is present.

HDMI-CEC
HDMI-CEC handles device discovery, power, input switching, and control commands. A TV may need CEC enabled before it establishes or controls an ARC/eARC audio link. Samsung calls its CEC implementation Anynet+. If the soundbar is not detected, look for HDMI-CEC in the TV’s general, external-device, or connection settings and enable it on both devices.
Audio delay
Audio delay changes synchronization between picture and sound. It does not enable Atmos, increase bandwidth, or repair a missing eARC handshake. Adjust it only after the connection and format are working and the dialogue is visibly out of sync.
ARC, eARC, and Dolby Atmos format support
ARC and eARC do not provide identical bandwidth or codec support. Samsung describes eARC as supporting high-bitrate formats such as Dolby TrueHD and Atmos, while Atmos can also be carried in Dolby Digital Plus in supported configurations. Therefore, the claim that every Atmos signal requires eARC is too broad.
The actual result depends on four links: the source and its output setting, the TV’s input and pass-through behavior, the ARC/eARC connection, and the soundbar or receiver’s decoder. A streaming app may deliver Dolby Digital Plus with Atmos, while a disc player or another source may use a higher-bitrate format. Check each device’s manual rather than relying on the Atmos logo alone.
An LG product manual demonstrates why a single recipe cannot cover every television: PCM input is output as PCM; Auto or Pass Through can output Dolby Digital Plus/Atmos, while other formats change according to ARC/eARC state and model. See the LG digital-sound-output manual section for that model’s table.

| Connection or setting | What it is useful for | Important limitation |
|---|---|---|
| ARC | Returns supported TV audio to an ARC soundbar or receiver. | Lower bandwidth and codec support than eARC; exact formats depend on all devices. |
| eARC | Provides the enhanced return path for compatible high-bitrate audio. | Both endpoints and the cable must support the required link. |
| Auto output | Lets the TV select a supported encoded format. | Negotiation can differ by model and connected device. |
| Pass-Through | Attempts to send audio without TV processing. | May appear only with an external device and may not pass every codec. |
| PCM | Compatibility fallback when encoded audio produces silence or errors. | Do not treat it as proof that an Atmos bitstream is being delivered. |
How to check whether your equipment can deliver Atmos
Inspect the HDMI ports
Find the single TV HDMI input labeled ARC or eARC; many televisions have only one. Connect it to the soundbar or receiver’s HDMI output labeled ARC/eARC. A normal HDMI input or output without the return-channel label will not provide TV-to-audio return.
Confirm support at every endpoint
- The television must support the desired ARC/eARC return behavior and output format.
- The soundbar or receiver must decode Dolby Atmos and accept the format being sent.
- The source device or app must actually provide Atmos, with its audio output configured accordingly.
- The HDMI cable must support the required eARC link if eARC is needed.
Use an eARC-capable HDMI cable when the existing cable is incompatible, damaged, or unable to establish the link. Samsung identifies HEAC or HEC compatibility as relevant cable characteristics. The available evidence does not establish that a premium-priced cable is necessary; compatibility matters more than branding or price.
Check the source, not just the TV badge
Play a title or test program identified as Dolby Atmos by the service or playback device. A television setting cannot add height channels to stereo, Dolby Digital without Atmos metadata, or another unsupported source. If the receiver’s information screen reports Dolby Digital Plus without Atmos, investigate the source account, app, title, and output setting before changing more TV options.
Troubleshooting: fix the link in the right order
No sound or no device detected
- Power off the TV and audio device, then verify both HDMI plugs are fully seated.
- Check that each plug is in the port labeled ARC or eARC, not a standard HDMI port.
- Enable HDMI-CEC on both devices (Anynet+ on Samsung televisions).
- Set eARC to Auto when both endpoints support eARC.
- Reconnect the cable and restart both devices so they can renegotiate the HDMI connection.
If the audio device still is not detected, consult the exact model manuals. Some products require a particular HDMI output, firmware state, or input selection.
Sound works, but Atmos is not reported
- Confirm the program or disc actually carries Atmos.
- Verify that the soundbar or receiver’s input is set to the TV’s ARC/eARC connection.
- Enable the TV’s Dolby Atmos compatibility option if available.
- Try Auto, then Pass-Through, for Digital Output Audio Format.
- Check the source device’s audio output and the audio system’s documented codec list.
Atmos may be delivered as Dolby Digital Plus over a supported ARC path, so the absence of eARC alone does not prove that Atmos is impossible. Conversely, eARC cannot compensate for a source, TV, or receiver that lacks the required Atmos support.

Audio is silent, distorted, or intermittent
- Use PCM temporarily as a compatibility diagnostic.
- If PCM restores sound, compare the TV’s supported formats with the soundbar or receiver manual before returning to Auto or Pass-Through.
- Test the other format option one at a time; changing several settings at once makes the cause harder to identify.
- Replace the HDMI cable only if it is faulty or does not support the required eARC connection.
PCM can identify a format-negotiation problem, but it may change the available surround or Atmos signaling. Treat it as a diagnostic and choose the final setting based on the documented capabilities of your specific devices.
Picture and sound are out of sync
Leave the Atmos and eARC settings unchanged and adjust Audio Delay in the TV or audio device. Delay is a timing correction, not a codec or bandwidth setting. If the mismatch changes between apps or sources, check those sources individually.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. When replacing equipment is actually necessary
Buying a new soundbar or receiver is not a general prerequisite for changing these settings. Consider replacement only after checking the existing system’s capabilities:
- Does the TV have an ARC or eARC port, and does the audio device have the matching return port?
- Do both devices support Dolby Atmos and the specific codec supplied by the source?
- Can the TV output or pass through that codec rather than converting it?
- Does the source route through a compatible HDMI input or app?
- Does the current cable support eARC when eARC is required?
If one component lacks the necessary decoder, return-channel support, or format pass-through, a compatible Atmos soundbar or eARC receiver may solve that specific limitation. Otherwise, replacing hardware will not improve a configuration problem that can be corrected in the menus.

Frequently Asked Questions
Does Dolby Atmos always require HDMI eARC?
No. Supported Dolby Digital Plus with Atmos can work over ARC in some configurations. eARC is needed for certain higher-bitrate formats and for the capabilities documented by compatible equipment.

Why is Pass-Through missing from my TV menu?
Some televisions show Pass-Through only after an external ARC/eARC device is connected. The label and availability are model-dependent.
Should I leave Digital Output Audio Format on PCM?
Use PCM when Auto or Pass-Through produces silence or an unsupported-format error. For Atmos testing, start with Auto or Pass-Through and follow the TV and audio device manuals.
Can changing TV settings turn regular content into Atmos?
No. Atmos must be present in the source content and supported by the complete source-to-TV-to-audio-device path.
What should I do if eARC will not connect?
Verify the labeled ports, enable HDMI-CEC, set eARC to Auto, reseat or replace an incompatible cable, and consult the exact model manuals.
