There is no single objectively best true crime podcast: the right pick depends on whether you want a reported investigation, a case-by-case episode, conversational storytelling, or unresolved disappearances. This editorial shortlist covers ten established shows across those styles. It is a guide, not a ranked countdown; availability and free access vary by country and episode.
Choose by the kind of listening you want
| Show | Best fit | Style |
|---|---|---|
| Serial | A story that follows uncertainty as evidence emerges | Serialized narrative reporting |
| Crime Junkie | A structured case in a single episode | Case breakdowns with a large archive |
| My Favorite Murder | Listeners who like host conversation and humor | Two-host true-crime discussion |
| Dateline NBC | Broadcast-style reporting and interviews | News magazine reporting and audio series |
| Casefile True Crime | Chronological, detailed narration | Host-light, research-dense cases |
| Morbid | A looser mix of true crime and adjacent subjects | Conversational, with paranormal topics too |
| In the Dark | Reporting on criminal justice and institutional failures | Investigative journalism |
| Up and Vanished | A developing cold-case story | Ongoing investigation and public attention |
| Dr. Death | Medical misconduct and oversight | Investigative series |
| Someone Knows Something | Unresolved disappearances and family interviews | Field reporting |
The recommendations below reflect an editorial selection based on track record, production quality, and continued relevance, rather than a comparative listening test or audience survey. Quartz’s 2026 guide provides the selection and show descriptions.
For narrative reporting and deep investigations
Serial
Start with season one if you want a reported story whose uncertainties unfold over a sequence of episodes. Its 12 episodes, released in 2014, revisited the 1999 killing of Hae Min Lee and Adnan Syed’s conviction. The series reflects what its reporting established at the time; it should not be treated as a current account of subsequent legal developments. Check current court records for the latest case status.
Recommended Free Tools
In the Dark
This is the choice for listeners more interested in how criminal-justice systems work than in a conventional whodunit. The reporting on the prosecution of Curtis Flowers examined institutional failures and the case reached the U.S. Supreme Court. The podcast is a starting point for understanding that reporting, not a substitute for current court records when assessing later legal developments.

Dr. Death
Choose this series for investigations of medical misconduct and the systems meant to oversee health professionals. Its focus is institutional accountability, rather than a standard police investigation.
For individual cases and clear narration
Casefile True Crime
Casefile suits listeners who prefer a host-light voice and chronological storytelling. Its catalog covers cases from multiple regions, with longer, detail-rich narratives rather than casual host banter.

Crime Junkie presents cases in a tightly structured format, usually one case per episode, making it an accessible pick for listeners who want a large back catalog. The show has faced past criticism about sourcing and attribution, so treat its episodes as a route into a case, not a replacement for checking cited reporting and sources.

For conversation, cold cases, and unresolved disappearances
My Favorite Murder
This two-host show blends researched cases with humor and conversation. That format is part of its appeal, but it is less suited to listeners seeking a strict chronology or the formal tone of an investigative documentary.
Morbid
Morbid takes a looser conversational approach, mixing true crime with paranormal and related subjects. Apple’s UK True Crime category lists it in the category; that is a country-specific catalog, not a guarantee of availability everywhere.
Rank #4

Up and Vanished
Try this if you want a cold-case story that develops over time and explores how public attention may intersect with police work. Unproven theories can affect families and investigations, so listen critically and avoid treating speculation as established fact.
Someone Knows Something
This CBC series is a strong pick for field reporting, interviews with families, and unresolved disappearances. Its archive offers a way to follow separate cases through sustained reporting.
Best Value

Where to listen
For these shows, the 2026 Quartz guide names Spotify, Apple Podcasts, and iHeartRadio as major listening destinations. Some episodes or series are also available through a producer’s site or a public broadcaster’s app. Check the current show page in your country: a title may not appear in every region, and availability of a free public feed does not mean every episode or bonus is free. Some shows offer paid tiers with ad-free or additional episodes. Quartz’s guide describes these platform options.
Public broadcaster apps can be especially useful for broadcaster-produced shows. Someone Knows Something has a CBC archive. In the UK, Intrigue: To Catch a King is a BBC Radio 4 investigative series about a people-smuggling network, available through BBC Sounds; it is an additional option, not one of the ten shows in Quartz’s selection. The Week’s recommendation describes the series.
Check access before starting a series
- Search the show title in your preferred podcast app, then confirm you have the right program and its current feed.
- For broadcaster-produced shows, check the broadcaster’s own app or site as well as general podcast apps.
- Review the episode list and any subscription notice before committing to a long series; paid feeds, trials, and catalog access can change.
Other shows and what podcast rankings tell you
Spotify’s June 2026 editorial roundup includes Foundling, about an abandoned baby’s search for her birth mother and the effects of that search on others. That description comes from Anita Brabham, Spotify’s Podcast & Audience Development Manager, in Spotify’s roundup; it is an attributed editorial description, not an independent assessment of the show.
True crime has been prominent in podcast rankings, but one statistic needs careful context: Pew Research Center found that 24% of the analyzed top-ranked podcasts were categorized as true crime. The study examined 451 podcasts that appeared in the top 300 in average U.S. daily rankings on Spotify and Apple Podcasts between April 1 and September 2022. It was published in 2023 and does not establish the current share of all podcasts or listeners. Pew’s report explains the sample.
