If you want one more Tomb Kings campaign before switching races, try Settra: Total War Academy identifies him as the easiest Tomb King start. If you want a new faction, there is no evidence-backed universal best choice for Tomb Kings players. Choose based on whether you want to keep the undead theme, explore a different race, or change the campaign experience—and check what your game library actually unlocks before settling on a faction.
There is no official “best next faction” ranking
SEGA’s official materials introduce Grand Cathay, Kislev and the Chaos factions as options in Total War: Warhammer III, but the reviewed pages do not provide a current, like-for-like ranking of those factions against the Tomb Kings. They do not establish which is easiest, most similar, or most enjoyable for someone finishing a Tomb Kings campaign.
That matters because “after the Tomb Kings” can mean different things. You might want another undead-themed campaign, a fresh strategic system, or simply a faction with a different identity. Those are useful preferences for narrowing the choice, but they do not prove that one race is mechanically the closest match. SEGA describes WARHAMMER III as featuring seven unique races, hundreds of units, real-time battles and a strategy sandbox; those are broad descriptions, not comparative measures of difficulty or playstyle.
So the useful answer is conditional rather than a tier list. First decide whether you want familiarity or a sharp change. Then decide whether your priority is campaign challenge, theme, or simply access to a faction you already own. The official material supports a cautious recommendation within the Tomb Kings, but it does not establish a definitive cross-race successor.

If you want to stay with the Tomb Kings
Settra is the lower-friction starting point in Academy guidance
Total War Academy calls Settra the easiest Tomb King King to start with, citing growth and public-order effects. Treat that as the Academy’s guidance, not as a verified ranking for the current live build: its page reflects older campaign context, and campaign balance can change. Still, if you enjoyed the Tomb Kings but want a less demanding next run within the same race, Settra is the most defensible recommendation in the available official guidance.
This is a continuity choice, not a claim that Settra is the easiest faction in WARHAMMER III overall. The cited recommendation is specifically about Tomb King starts and rests on the Academy’s descriptions of his faction effects. If you are choosing between a familiar campaign and learning a new race, Settra offers a way to remain with the Tomb Kings while changing the particular ruler and start. Check current patch notes if exact effects or present-day difficulty matter to you.
Khatep and Arkhan are described as harder starts
The Academy characterizes Khatep and Arkhan as hard starts. It points to Khatep’s distant starting position and Arkhan’s difficult surrounding enemies. These descriptions can help if you are deliberately seeking a tougher campaign, but they should not be treated as current difficulty measurements. The Academy’s older context may not fully reflect later updates.

The cited material does not give a current numerical difficulty score or a direct comparison between Khatep and Arkhan. It establishes only that the Academy framed both as hard, with different contextual challenges: distance for Khatep and nearby hostile pressure for Arkhan.
Khalida offers a different Tomb Kings emphasis
The Academy frames Khalida’s campaign around protecting her homeland from vampire corruption and describes her archer legions as receiving an ammunition bonus in the game context covered by that page. The thematic focus may appeal if you want to continue the Tomb Kings story from a different angle. Do not assume the cited ammunition effect is unchanged in the current build; the available material does not verify its present value.

Khalida is therefore a sensible choice if the campaign premise appeals to you, rather than because the cited source proves she is easier, harder, or the closest mechanical match for another faction. Treat the homeland-defense theme as a broad point of difference within the Tomb Kings, and verify current faction effects before planning around a specific bonus.
Patch 6.3 makes older Tomb Kings guides less dependable
Creative Assembly’s Patch 6.3 update changed several parts of the Tomb Kings campaign, including confederation, canopic jars, skills, the technology tree, Books of Nagash and related effects. The studio described the patch as an update, not a full rework. It said the changes responded to ongoing player feedback; Liam Newman, a Senior Live QA Technician on Total War: WARHAMMER III, specifically made that distinction when discussing the patch.

“These updates are not full reworks but they do come directly from the ongoing feedback we’ve received from you – whether through our community hub, our legacy forums, Reddit, and the general chatter we see out there online, so thank you for it and I hope you enjoy the updates in the patch.”
For your decision, the practical point is that old guides may describe systems that have since changed. A guide written before Patch 6.3 may still help explain a faction’s broad identity, but check current patch notes before relying on it for specific campaign mechanics or comparing starts. Patch 6.3 is also not a guarantee that no later changes have superseded it.
This is relevant even if you are not planning to leave the race. The Academy’s Settra, Khatep, Arkhan and Khalida descriptions provide useful orientation, but they should not be mistaken for a live-build test of their relative difficulty or every current effect. For detailed planning, distinguish enduring campaign framing—such as the Academy’s descriptions of Khatep’s distance or Khalida’s objective—from exact numbers and mechanics that may have changed.

Choose a new race by the kind of change you want
If you are ready to leave the Tomb Kings, use your preference as a filter rather than treating any faction as a proven mechanical successor. SEGA’s official WARHAMMER III portal presents Grand Cathay, Kislev and the Chaos factions as choices, but the reviewed official descriptions do not provide enough current faction-specific detail to responsibly rank their battle styles, campaign difficulty or similarity to Tomb Kings.
| Your priority | Starting point | What the available official material establishes |
|---|---|---|
| A lower-friction campaign without leaving the Tomb Kings | Settra | Total War Academy calls him the easiest Tomb King start and points to growth and public-order effects; its guidance reflects older campaign context. |
| A harder Tomb Kings start | Khatep or Arkhan | The Academy describes both as hard starts, citing Khatep’s distance and Arkhan’s surrounding enemies; current difficulty is not established. |
| A Tomb Kings campaign framed around defending against vampire corruption | Khalida | The Academy describes that theme and mentions an archer ammunition bonus in its game context; the current status of that effect is not established. |
| A different race and theme | Grand Cathay, Kislev or a Chaos faction | SEGA identifies these as WARHAMMER III options. A current difficulty ranking, battle-style comparison and Tomb Kings similarity rating are not stated in the reviewed official material. |
Use the table as a shortlist, not a tier list. If you chiefly liked the undead identity or Tomb Kings-specific campaign systems, staying with the race is the only option here supported by direct Tomb Kings guidance. If you want a sharp thematic change, select among the other races by which setting interests you; the official descriptions available here do not justify promising that one will feel easiest or most familiar.
A useful way to make that choice is to name the thing you want to preserve and the thing you want to change. If the Tomb Kings’ identity is the main attraction, staying with the race is the clearest route to more of it. If you are mainly looking for a new setting, Grand Cathay, Kislev and the Chaos factions are named options in SEGA’s portal, but choosing among them requires your own interest in their themes; the material reviewed here does not substantiate a battle-style recommendation. If what you want is a different campaign system, do not infer that a faction has one particular mechanic based only on its race name or a broad publisher introduction.
Likewise, wanting a different tactical emphasis is a valid preference, but this comparison does not have enough current faction-specific evidence to tell you which named race best supplies it. Look at up-to-date faction pages and patch information before choosing on army composition or battle feel. That keeps the recommendation honest: a preference can guide your shortlist, while a factual claim about current mechanics needs current faction-specific support.
Check ownership before choosing a faction
Faction availability depends on your library. SEGA’s official ownership guide says WARHAMMER III grants access to Immortal Empires and the launch races and Lords listed in its guide. Other races and Lords may require an earlier game or the relevant DLC. Purchased content must be on the same game client. Because unlock requirements can depend on the specific content and can change, verify the current official guide and your own library before buying anything.

- Tabletop game
- Easy to use
- Premium quality
- Identify the exact faction or Lord you want. Do not assume that owning WARHAMMER III alone unlocks every race or character in the broader series.
- Check the current official ownership guide. Confirm whether the content requires WARHAMMER III, an earlier game, DLC, or a combination.
- Check the client where you own the games. The guide specifies that purchased content must be on the same game client.
- Review your existing library before purchasing. Confirm which required games or add-ons you already own and whether they match the relevant client.
It is worth doing this check before you settle on a new campaign, not after buying an add-on. The exact faction or Lord matters because requirements are not necessarily the same for every piece of content. Make sure the title or DLC you have in mind is the one that unlocks the particular option you want, and that the relevant games and purchased content are on the same client.
This is especially important if a faction recommendation points you toward content you do not currently have. The available information does not establish a price, edition, platform-specific listing or current availability for each unlock, so check the relevant store listing rather than relying on a general recommendation. Do not assume that a listing or unlock rule applies to every platform or edition, and do not buy DLC until you have compared it with your existing library.
How to account for newer content announcements
Warhammer Community announced on 13 August 2026 that the Lords of the End Times DLC was due to come out on 24 September 2026. The announcement named four Lords and described new units, scenarios, gameplay updates and revised victory conditions. Since the announced date has passed, the announcement alone does not confirm current availability. It also does not say which faction a Tomb Kings player should choose next or compare the DLC’s factions against the Tomb Kings. Check current official content and ownership information if this release affects your choice.
In other words, a recent announcement can change which options you want to investigate, but it is not a substitute for checking what is currently released, what it contains, and what your account unlocks. The announcement’s stated date is a dated statement of planned release, not independent confirmation of present availability. Nor does the announcement make a comparative recommendation for Tomb Kings players.

A practical decision in three questions
- Do you want another Tomb Kings campaign? If yes, Settra is the cautious lower-friction recommendation from Total War Academy. Consider Khatep or Arkhan if you want the harder starts described there, with the older-guidance caveat in mind.
- What did you enjoy most? If it was the race’s undead theme or its campaign systems, another Tomb Kings campaign preserves that familiarity. If you want a different identity, look at the official introductions to Grand Cathay, Kislev and the Chaos factions without assuming their mechanics match the Tomb Kings.
- Do you own the content? Confirm the exact unlock requirements and same-client rule before committing to a faction or buying an add-on.
There is no official survey or comparative win-rate evidence establishing what Tomb Kings players most often prefer next. The most reliable choice is therefore personal and conditional: Settra for a supported, lower-friction continuation; a different Tomb King for a more challenging or differently themed continuation; or a new race chosen for its setting, after checking its unlocks.
Best Value
If you want a quick rule: start with Settra when you want continuity and the Academy’s lower-friction recommendation; consider Khatep or Arkhan if the harder-start descriptions appeal and you are comfortable with their age; choose Khalida for the homeland-defense framing; or shortlist a new race by setting and verify its ownership and current mechanics before committing. None of those choices should be mistaken for a current cross-race ranking.
Frequently Asked Questions
What faction should I play after Tomb Kings if I want an easier campaign?
If you want to stay with the Tomb Kings, Total War Academy calls Settra the easiest Tomb King start and cites growth and public-order effects. That is older guidance, not a verified current ranking, and it does not establish which WARHAMMER III faction is easiest overall.
Should I play Settra, Khatep, Arkhan or Khalida next?
Settra is the Academy’s lower-friction suggestion. It describes Khatep and Arkhan as hard starts, noting Khatep’s distant position and Arkhan’s difficult surrounding enemies. It frames Khalida’s campaign around protecting her homeland from vampire corruption. These descriptions come from older campaign context, so check current notes before relying on exact effects or difficulty.

The official material reviewed does not provide a current similarity ranking for Grand Cathay, Kislev or the Chaos factions. Decide whether you want to preserve the Tomb Kings’ theme or make a sharp change, then investigate the race that interests you without assuming its mechanics are a match.
Do I need DLC or another Total War: Warhammer game to play every faction?
No single rule covers every faction and Lord. SEGA’s guide says WARHAMMER III grants Immortal Empires and the launch races and Lords listed there; other content may require an earlier game or relevant DLC. Purchased content must be on the same game client. Check the current guide and your library for the exact unlock.
Is the Lords of the End Times DLC available now?
Warhammer Community announced on 13 August 2026 that it was due on 24 September 2026, a date that has passed. The announcement alone does not confirm current availability, so check the current official listing and ownership details.
The Bottom Line
Bottom line: If you want another Tomb Kings campaign, Settra is the cautious lower-friction pick in Total War Academy’s older guidance. For a different race, there is no supported universal best successor: choose by the theme or campaign change you want, then verify current mechanics and ownership requirements before you commit.
