Before using Tesla driver assistance, check how the car chooses its speed and—if you’re using Traffic-Aware Cruise Control—its following distance. If Full Self-Driving (Supervised) is available, review its Speed Profile and learn the controls for taking over or disengaging. These settings vary by feature, vehicle, market, equipment, and software; they do not make the car autonomous or remove your responsibility to supervise.
First identify which assistance feature you’re using
“Assisted Driving” is not a single universal Tesla setting. Tesla’s U.S. materials describe features including Autosteer, Traffic-Aware Cruise Control, and Full Self-Driving (Supervised). Their settings and controls differ, and a feature or option described in one model’s manual may not be available in yours.
Use the Owner’s Manual shown in your vehicle for the exact controls and instructions for your car. Tesla’s support guidance describes Full Self-Driving (Supervised) customization at Controls > Self-Driving > Speed Profile; the cited U.S. Model 3 Autosteer manual uses Controls > Self-Driving for its settings. Check how the car will choose its speed
Autosteer
The cited U.S. Model 3 manual says Autosteer can use either the detected speed limit or the car’s current speed as its speed basis. If you select speed-limit-based driving, the manual describes an offset that can be set as a fixed amount or a percentage. Check which basis and offset are selected before driving so you know how the car may set its speed; an offset is not a substitute for judging road, weather, traffic, and legal conditions.

Full Self-Driving (Supervised)
Tesla describes the Speed Profile as affecting how quickly the vehicle drives and how frequently it makes speed-based lane changes. Choose a profile suited to the conditions and your preferences, but don’t treat any profile as a safety guarantee. For Traffic-Aware Cruise Control, set a following distance you can supervise
Traffic-Aware Cruise Control maintains speed and offers an adjustable following distance. In the cited U.S. Model S instructions, the driver adjusts that distance with the steering wheel’s right scroll button. The exact control can vary, so confirm it in your vehicle’s manual. Confirm activation behavior and know how to disengage
Activation
The cited Model 3 manual describes a Self-Driving Activation option for equipped vehicles: Single Click can engage both Traffic-Aware Cruise Control and Autosteer with one press, while Double Click requires a double press to engage Autosteer. This option depends on vehicle configuration and manufacture date. Check what your car supports and which behavior is selected so the control does what you expect.

Tesla’s Full Self-Driving (Supervised) guidance lists braking, steering manually, and vehicle-specific controls such as the gear stalk or right scroll wheel as ways to disengage. Which control applies depends on the vehicle; use its manual to identify the correct one before starting. Stay ready to take over rather than waiting for an alert or assuming the system will resolve a situation.

Settings do not replace active supervision
Tesla calls Autosteer “a hands-on assistance feature.” That wording is from the U.S. Model 3 Owner’s Manual. Tesla’s U.S. Model Y manual warns drivers not to assume Full Self-Driving (Supervised) will stop or continue through an intersection as expected; the driver must pay attention and be ready to act immediately. No speed choice, profile, following distance, or activation setting makes these systems autonomous.
