Start with Wounding Stone if you want the safest general-purpose pickup on the opening Tiel route. Then choose a second stone for the problem your build actually has: Parasitic Stone for kill-based sustain, Acolyte’s Stone for a Resolve-spending charged light, Auspicious Stone for melee criticals, Emberseed Stone for burning sidearm shots, Volatile Fragment for groups, or Siegebreaker’s Stone plus Retribution Stone for ranged stagger and a follow-up riposte. There is no supported universal tier list; these are role-based early choices whose value depends on your weapon, slot and playstyle.

The route and upgrade advice below combines the currently documented pickup paths with the game’s changing progression system. Pickup locations come from community guides, while the official update page confirms that progression, economy and named Tarstones have changed since launch.

The best first Tarstone depends on your role

Tarstones are not interchangeable stat gems. They occupy different support, combat, infusion and ability roles, and many are restricted to a particular weapon or sidearm. Because one build can hold several stones across different slots, the useful question is not “Which stone is strongest?” but “Which effect solves my next problem without wasting an upgrade on a stone I will soon replace?”

Stone Best early use Documented pickup route Main trade-off
Wounding Stone Simple melee damage pressure through perforation Opening grass/Tiel route Combat effect; confirm that your current weapon accepts it
Parasitic Stone Leech stacks on kills while clearing ordinary enemies Pool-area detour near the Obsidian Lathe Its healing cap arrives quickly, so rank two is usually enough for the opening
Acolyte’s Stone An active charged-light ability that spends Resolve Buy from Merrick after selling a marsh pearl Consumes Resolve and may not fit a build that saves Resolve for other abilities
Auspicious Stone Improving melee critical-chance support Mushroom Village candle offerings More valuable to critical-focused melee than to a status or ranged setup
Emberseed Stone Adding burn to sidearm shots Mushroom Village area Useful only if your sidearm is part of the plan
Volatile Fragment Kill explosions for groups and crowded routes Mushroom Village Gate route Needs kills and enemy grouping to show its value
Siegebreaker’s Stone Ranged stagger Mushroom Village Gate area Its payoff depends on using a compatible ranged weapon
Retribution Stone A follow-up riposte after a break Found alongside the Mushroom Village ranged options Requires you to create and exploit a break rather than simply dealing damage

This is a practical pickup order, not an official ranking. The first-hour guide specifically places Wounding Stone first, while the broader system guide describes the stones as build-dependent choices. See the first-hour pickup guide and the Tarstones system guide for the underlying route descriptions.

Which Tarstone should you take first?

Choose Wounding Stone for the default melee start

Wounding Stone is the cleanest first recommendation because it appears on the opening grass/Tiel route and adds perforation to melee attacks. You do not need to detour to a merchant, gather a special currency or build around a complicated active ability. Pick it up while learning the first area, equip it on a compatible melee weapon and let it earn progression naturally.

It is the best default, not a mandatory answer. If your chosen weapon cannot use that Combat stone, forcing it into the build is worse than taking a compatible support or ranged option. Check the stone’s compatibility in the Tarstone screen before spending resources.

Take Parasitic Stone when survival is the bottleneck

Parasitic Stone is the early sustain choice. The pool-area detour near the Obsidian Lathe provides it, and its documented effect grants leech stacks on kills. That can reduce the number of healing items you spend while clearing groups and learning enemy patterns.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The guide warns that the healing cap arrives quickly. Treat Parasitic as a tool for opening-area sustain, not an excuse to pour every resource into it. Rank two is described as sufficient for the opening; if your later loadout no longer needs kill-based healing, stop there and move your investment elsewhere.

Buy Acolyte’s Stone for an active Resolve build

Acolyte’s Stone is obtained from Merrick after you sell a marsh pearl. It provides a charged-light ability that spends Resolve, so it is a deliberate playstyle choice rather than a passive bonus. Choose it when you already plan to generate and spend Resolve during normal fights, and skip it when your build reserves Resolve for another ability or rarely reaches a charged-light window.

Because this is a merchant purchase, compare the cost of the marsh pearl opportunity with the value of the active you will actually use. The stone is not automatically better than an easily collected combat or support pickup.

Use Auspicious Stone for melee criticals

Auspicious Stone is the early Support option for a melee critical-chance plan. It is available through the candle offerings in Mushroom Village. The detour makes sense after you have committed to a melee weapon whose damage benefits from critical hits; it is less compelling if your build is centered on ranged shots, burn, stagger or a Resolve ability.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Do not treat “critical chance” as a universal upgrade. Its value rises with a weapon and attack pattern that give you enough melee opportunities to realize additional criticals.

Pick Emberseed Stone when the sidearm is part of your rotation

Emberseed Stone adds burn to sidearm shots. It is therefore a specialized infusion choice: strong when you regularly open encounters or finish targets with the sidearm, irrelevant when you rarely fire it. Take it from the Mushroom Village options if your sidearm is an active part of your combat loop.

Before upgrading, verify that the stone matches the sidearm you intend to keep. A build that changes sidearms shortly afterward can lose more value than it gained from an early rank.

Take Volatile Fragment for crowded encounters

Volatile Fragment is the group-clearing option listed on the Mushroom Village Gate route. Its kill explosions become more useful when enemies cluster or when one kill can damage several nearby targets. It is a situational crowd-control pickup rather than a single-target boss solution.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Use it when ordinary packs are slowing your progress. If your problem is a durable elite, a ranged break or melee critical plan may provide a more direct answer.

Pair Siegebreaker’s Stone with Retribution Stone for ranged breaks

Siegebreaker’s Stone supplies ranged stagger. Retribution Stone adds a riposte after a break, so the pair supports a sequence: stagger from range, create a break, then capitalize with the riposte. Both are listed around the Mushroom Village Gate route.

This pairing earns its slot only if you can reliably land ranged attacks and recognize break windows. It is a poor first investment for a player who is committed to close-range melee and does not use a compatible ranged weapon.

A practical early pickup route

The following order minimizes commitment while giving you a useful answer for common early-game problems. It is a route, not a requirement; stop when your build has the effect it needs.

  1. Follow the opening grass/Tiel path and collect Wounding Stone. Equip it on a compatible melee weapon and let it gain progression during normal exploration.
  2. Decide whether sustain is actually limiting you. If you are spending too many healing resources while clearing, detour to the pool area near the Obsidian Lathe for Parasitic Stone. If you are comfortable surviving, continue without the detour.
  3. Visit Merrick if you want an active Resolve spender. Sell a marsh pearl to access Acolyte’s Stone, but only buy it if the charged-light ability fits your Resolve economy.
  4. Move toward Mushroom Village when your build is established. The candle offerings provide the Auspicious Stone route for melee critical chance.
  5. Choose the Mushroom Village specialization that matches your equipment. Take Emberseed Stone for sidearm burn, Volatile Fragment for kill explosions, or the Siegebreaker’s Stone and Retribution Stone sequence for ranged stagger and a follow-up riposte.
  6. Equip only compatible stones. A stone that looks powerful on paper but cannot function with your current weapon is not an upgrade. Keep it uninvested until the correct weapon enters your loadout.

The locations above are documented by the Mortal Shell 2 first-hour guide; because these are secondary map guides rather than official developer documentation, allow for small route or encounter differences after updates.

How to choose between competing stones

When two pickups are available, score each one against the same five questions:

  • Compatibility: Does it work with the weapon or sidearm you are using now?
  • Effect type: Do you need sustain, criticals, stagger, status damage, crowd control or an ability?
  • Resource pattern: Is the effect passive, dependent on kills, or paid for with Resolve?
  • Route cost: How dangerous or time-consuming is the detour compared with your next objective?
  • Longevity: Will this stone remain in the build long enough to justify rank-two or rank-three spending?

This framework prevents a common mistake: choosing a stone because its name sounds universally strong, then discovering that its trigger, weapon type or resource cost does not match your play. A modest effect that activates every fight is usually more useful than a stronger effect you cannot trigger reliably.

Unlock Tarstone upgrading before spending heavily

Early progression is gated. The beginner guide directs players to the southeastern Fallgrim Outskirts and the Mushroom Village Gate dungeon for the progression item that enables Tarstone upgrades at the Tar Forge in Marrow Keep. It reports that this item is reachable before the final boss.

That unlock should come before you commit to deep rank progression. Equipped Tarstones can reach the rank-two experience threshold before the progression item is obtained, but the guide says they cannot continue toward rank three while the next rank is locked. Experience earned while the next rank is unavailable is wasted.

Recommended unlock sequence

  1. Reach the southeastern Fallgrim Outskirts. Explore the route leading toward the Mushroom Village Gate dungeon rather than spending all your early resources on rank progression.
  2. Clear the Mushroom Village Gate dungeon and obtain the progression item. The item enables Tarstone upgrading at the Tar Forge.
  3. Return to Marrow Keep and use the Tar Forge. This is where the rank upgrade is purchased once the progression path is open.
  4. Deliver Etching Needles to Franz as directed by the first-hour progression route. Then keep your chosen stone equipped while it levels through ordinary play.
  5. Pay for rank two when the stone is ready. The beginner guide lists a 100 Gold cost for rank two.
  6. Rotate to another rank-one stone. Let the next candidate earn its rank-two threshold instead of pushing every stone to the highest rank immediately.

How to spend Gold and rank progression

Stage What to do Why
Before the Tar Forge unlock Equip the stones you are testing, but avoid treating locked progression as a reason to grind. Progress can stop at the rank-two threshold, and excess experience may be lost while the next rank is unavailable.
Rank one to rank two Keep the stone equipped, then pay 100 Gold at the Tar Forge when eligible. Rank two is the inexpensive way to test several roles across a build.
After several rank-two stones Compare which stones are still equipped and which effects you trigger consistently. This reveals your real loadout instead of locking you into an early guess.
Rank three and deeper investment Reserve it for stones that remain in the final or long-term setup. The first-hour guide specifically warns against pushing every stone to rank three.

A useful cycle is: equip one rank-one stone, play until it reaches rank two, pay the 100 Gold upgrade cost, then move to the next candidate. This spreads your early testing budget across sustain, damage, ranged and utility roles. If a stone leaves the build after one area, do not keep upgrading it simply because it has already earned experience.

Weapon compatibility is part of the recommendation

Combat stones and infusions are not generic bonuses that can be forced onto every weapon. The first-hour guide explicitly cautions against putting a Combat stone on an incompatible weapon. Before you select a stone, open the Tarstone interface and check the accepted weapon category or sidearm slot.

Your current build Start by considering Check before upgrading
Close-range melee with ordinary clearing Wounding Stone That the weapon accepts the Combat stone and that perforation is active on your attacks
Melee player losing health between checkpoints Parasitic Stone Whether you secure enough kills to trigger leech stacks and whether rank two already covers the route
Resolve-centered ability build Acolyte’s Stone That the charged-light ability fits your Resolve spending pattern
Critical-focused melee Auspicious Stone That your weapon and attack rhythm create enough melee opportunities for critical chance to matter
Sidearm opener or finisher Emberseed Stone That the sidearm is compatible and will remain in your loadout
Ranged break setup Siegebreaker’s Stone with Retribution Stone That you can stagger reliably and follow a break with the riposte
Dense enemy packs Volatile Fragment That enemies commonly die close enough for the explosion to pay off

Patch and version caveats

Do not copy launch-era damage values or assume that an old tier list remains accurate. The official Mortal Shell 2 patch notes document changes to progression and economy, the introduction of Fragile Tarstones, and changes to named stones. A community system guide verified on Hotfix 1.000.011 also records balance changes affecting Parasitic, Grudge, Bulwark, Clerik’s and Squall.

What’s actually slowing this PC down?

Those changes are why this guide recommends roles and routes instead of quoting unverified percentages. The official update page establishes that the system has changed, but it does not publish an official “best first Tarstone” ranking. Recheck the in-game description after a patch, especially before committing rank-three resources.

Common mistakes to avoid

  • Chasing a universal tier list: The documented evidence supports role-based choices, not one stone that every build should use.
  • Upgrading before unlocking the Tar Forge path: Reaching a locked rank threshold can waste further experience.
  • Putting every stone on rank three: Rotate rank-one stones through rank two, then reserve deeper spending for the ones that stay equipped.
  • Ignoring compatibility: A Combat stone cannot compensate for being unusable with your weapon.
  • Buying Acolyte’s Stone without a Resolve plan: Its active costs Resolve; a passive option may serve you better if Resolve is already committed elsewhere.
  • Taking Parasitic Stone as permanent healing: Its cap arrives quickly, so evaluate whether rank two is enough before investing further.
  • Choosing a ranged pair for a melee-only build: Siegebreaker’s Stone and Retribution Stone need reliable ranged stagger and break follow-through.
  • Assuming a community map is official: Treat the listed locations as practical route guidance and allow for changes after patches.

A concise decision path

  1. If you are starting on the Tiel route and have no specialized plan, take Wounding Stone.
  2. If survival and healing-item use are your immediate problem, detour for Parasitic Stone.
  3. If your build revolves around charged lights and Resolve, buy Acolyte’s Stone from Merrick after selling a marsh pearl.
  4. Once you reach Mushroom Village, choose Auspicious for melee criticals, Emberseed for sidearm burn, Volatile Fragment for groups, or Siegebreaker’s plus Retribution for ranged breaks.
  5. Unlock the Tar Forge path before grinding rank progression, pay 100 Gold for rank two, rotate candidates, and reserve rank-three investment for the stones that remain compatible with your finished build.
