Buy a 1TB microSD Express card if you expect to download several large Switch 2 games. The best-supported named option in the available specifications is the licensed SanDisk microSD Express Card for Nintendo Switch 2 (1TB). It is rated for up to 880 MB/s read speed and SanDisk estimates room for up to 36 games. Choose 512GB if you want a lower-capacity value option, or 256GB for a small digital library.

Nintendo Switch 2 accepts microSD Express cards for game storage; a conventional microSD card from an original Switch will not serve that purpose. The console has 256GB of internal storage before space reserved for system use, and Nintendo supports cards up to 2TB. Because the final download size for 007 First Light has not been published, capacity should be planned around your whole library rather than that one title.

The short answer: choose 1TB for a growing digital library

A 1TB microSD Express card is the most sensible default for people who buy most games digitally, keep several large titles installed, or want to avoid repeatedly archiving and redownloading software. The SanDisk microSD Express Card for Nintendo Switch 2 is the clearest named match in the available documentation: its 1TB model is licensed for Nintendo Switch 2, advertises up to 880 MB/s read speed, and is estimated to hold up to 36 games.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

There is no evidence that 1TB is required for 007 First Light. Nintendo’s game page says only that an eShop download needs enough available storage; it does not provide a final Switch 2 download-size figure. IO Interactive has announced a Nintendo Switch 2 launch date of March 18, 2027, so the practical decision is how many other games, updates, downloadable expansions, screenshots, and videos you expect to keep installed at the same time.

What storage works on Nintendo Switch 2?

Only microSD Express is supported for game storage

Nintendo Support states that Nintendo Switch 2 is compatible only with microSD Express cards. This is the key difference from the original Switch. A regular microSD or microSDXC card may physically fit the slot, but it is not the type Nintendo specifies for storing Switch 2 games. Buying an older, slower card because it worked in an original Switch can therefore leave you without usable game-storage expansion.

Nintendo’s compatibility guidance says any card meeting the microSD Express standard, up to 2TB, can be used. That means the important shopping filter is the interface standard first, followed by capacity and the seller’s reliability. A large-capacity card that is not explicitly microSD Express is the wrong product for this console.

The console starts with 256GB of internal storage

Nintendo lists 256GB of internal storage for Switch 2. Some of that capacity is reserved for system use, so the space available for games and media is lower than the headline number. Internal storage is still useful for getting started, but a card becomes increasingly valuable when a library includes multiple digital releases or frequent updates.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Save files are not stored on the card

Nintendo says game save data is stored in system memory and cannot be copied or saved to a microSD Express card. The card is for downloadable software, software updates, downloadable content, screenshots, and videos. This separation matters when you are estimating capacity: deleting or replacing a card affects installed software and captures, not the location of your save files.

SanDisk’s Switch 2 card capacities compared

SanDisk’s 2026 datasheet documents a licensed microSD Express family for Nintendo Switch 2 in three capacities. The read-speed figure is an “up to” rating, not a guarantee that every transfer will run at that speed. The game counts are SanDisk estimates, so actual numbers depend on the sizes of the games you install.

Capacity SanDisk estimated game capacity Advertised maximum read speed Best fit
256GB Up to 9 games Up to 880 MB/s Small digital library or supplement to internal storage
512GB Up to 18 games Up to 880 MB/s Value choice for a moderate library
1TB Up to 36 games Up to 880 MB/s Large or growing digital library

256GB: adequate when you buy selectively

The 256GB card is the least expensive entry into the documented licensed family, although current prices are not fixed in the available specifications. SanDisk estimates capacity for up to nine games. That can be enough if you purchase a mixture of physical and digital releases, finish games before moving on, or are comfortable archiving software and downloading it again later.

Because Switch 2 already includes 256GB of internal storage before system reservations, adding another 256GB card provides a meaningful but limited expansion. It is a sensible fit for a smaller household library, a second console used by one player, or someone who mainly wants room for a few digital exclusives and updates.

512GB: the practical middle ground

The 512GB model doubles the documented estimate to up to 18 games while retaining the same advertised read-speed ceiling of 880 MB/s. It is the strongest compromise when 1TB feels excessive but you do not want the tighter limits of a 256GB card.

Choose 512GB when your library is expected to grow steadily, when more than one person uses the console, or when you want several large releases installed at once. It also leaves more headroom for downloadable content and updates than a 256GB card without committing to the largest documented capacity.

1TB: best for keeping a broad library installed

The 1TB card is the recommendation for most dedicated digital buyers. SanDisk estimates up to 36 games, and the capacity gives substantially more room for patches, expansions, screenshots, and captured video. It is particularly useful if you prefer to keep games installed between play sessions instead of archiving them.

The 1TB model does not have a higher advertised read-speed limit than the smaller cards; all three are listed at up to 880 MB/s. Its advantage is capacity, not a documented speed advantage. The card is licensed for Nintendo Switch 2 in the cited SanDisk documentation, which reduces uncertainty about whether the product is the correct Express format.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Why the licensed SanDisk 1TB model is the safest named pick

The recommendation rests on documented fit rather than an independent benchmark. The product family is identified for Nintendo Switch 2, uses the required microSD Express standard, offers the same up-to-880 MB/s read rating across capacities, and includes a 1TB option with a published estimate of up to 36 games.

Other microSD Express cards that meet Nintendo’s standard can also be used; Nintendo does not limit the console to one manufacturer. However, the supplied specifications do not establish a complete cross-brand comparison of sustained performance, warranty length, failure rates, prices, or stock. Treat the SanDisk 1TB card as the best-supported named option here, not as proof that every competing Express card performs identically.

How much room should you plan for 007 First Light?

Do not buy a card based on a guessed file size. Nintendo’s game page requires enough available storage for an eShop download but does not publish a final Switch 2 download-size figure in the information reviewed. IO Interactive’s announcement confirms the Switch 2 release date as March 18, 2027; it does not provide a storage requirement.

A better planning method is to reserve space for the game plus the rest of your library. If 007 First Light is one of only a few digital games, a 256GB card may be sufficient alongside the console’s internal storage. If you expect to install a collection of similarly large releases, 512GB gives a more comfortable buffer. A 1TB card avoids making the size of one unannounced download the deciding factor and is the least restrictive choice for long-term digital use.

A capacity decision you can make before buying

  1. Count the games you want installed at the same time. Use the SanDisk estimates—up to nine games on 256GB, 18 on 512GB, or 36 on 1TB—as a directional planning figure, not a promise for every title.
  2. Add room for downloadable content and updates. The card also stores updates and DLC, so a library that technically fits can still become cramped after post-launch downloads.
  3. Decide how often you archive software. If you are comfortable deleting installed games and redownloading them later, 256GB or 512GB can work. If you want a ready-to-play library, favor 1TB.
  4. Include screenshots and videos in your estimate. Nintendo identifies both as card content. Frequent capture use makes extra capacity more valuable.
  5. Choose one card rather than splitting your library. Nintendo recommends using one microSD Express card instead of distributing software across multiple cards. A single 1TB card is therefore simpler than rotating several smaller cards.
  6. Check the product description for the required standard. The listing should explicitly identify the card as microSD Express and state compatibility with Switch 2 or compliance with the microSD Express standard. A conventional microSD card is not a substitute.

Performance: what the 880 MB/s figure does and does not tell you

“Up to 880 MB/s” is the maximum read-speed claim in SanDisk’s 2026 datasheet for the 256GB, 512GB, and 1TB models. It describes a performance ceiling under the manufacturer’s stated test conditions, not a guaranteed rate in every console, download, or file-transfer situation.

Read speed can affect how quickly software is read from storage, but the available documentation does not provide Switch 2 loading-time tests comparing these capacities or comparing SanDisk with other brands. Do not pay a premium on the assumption that the 1TB model loads games faster than the 512GB model; the documented distinction is capacity, while the advertised maximum read speed is the same.

Warranty, licensing, price, and availability

Licensing and compatibility

The SanDisk family is documented as licensed for Nintendo Switch 2, and Nintendo’s broader guidance permits any microSD Express card up to 2TB that meets the standard. Licensing is useful as a compatibility signal, but it does not replace checking the exact model number and seller listing.

Warranty

The supplied product specifications do not establish a warranty duration or regional warranty terms for these cards. Read the warranty statement attached to the exact listing you purchase, confirm who handles claims in your region, and keep the receipt. Warranty coverage can differ by model, country, and sales channel.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Price and stock

Prices and availability change frequently and were not captured in the cited specifications. Compare the current 256GB, 512GB, and 1TB prices at the time of purchase rather than relying on an old deal. Check that the listing is for a microSD Express card, not a similarly branded conventional microSD product, and confirm that the capacity and model match the title.

Using one card and protecting your library

Nintendo recommends using one microSD Express card rather than splitting software among multiple cards. This approach keeps the installed library in one place and avoids remembering which card contains a particular title. It also means the capacity decision matters more: buy enough headroom for the number of games you realistically want available.

Because save data remains in system memory, replacing a card does not move your saves onto the replacement card. Installed downloadable software, updates, DLC, screenshots, and videos are the material you should account for when planning a backup or card change. Before removing or replacing storage, make sure important captures are preserved using the console’s supported transfer or backup options.

Common buying mistakes and how to avoid them

  • Buying a regular microSD card: The card may work in an original Switch but does not meet Switch 2’s Express requirement for game storage. Look for “microSD Express,” not merely “microSDXC” or a high capacity.
  • Choosing capacity from the advertised number alone: System-reserved internal space and post-launch downloads reduce practical headroom. Use the game-count estimates as planning guidance and leave room for updates.
  • Assuming the 1TB model is faster: SanDisk lists up to 880 MB/s read speed for all three documented capacities. The 1TB justification is room for more software, not a higher published speed.
  • Waiting for a precise 007 First Light size that has not been announced: No final Switch 2 download figure is provided in the available Nintendo or IO Interactive information. Plan for your library instead of repeating an unverified number.
  • Rotating several small cards: Nintendo recommends one card. A single card reduces the chance of leaving a needed game on the wrong card and makes library management easier.
  • Ignoring the seller and region: Price, stock, and warranty conditions change. Verify the exact model, return policy, and warranty terms where you buy it.

Recommended choices by player profile

Occasional digital buyer

Pick 256GB if you keep only a few digital games installed, use physical releases often, and do not mind archiving finished titles. The documented estimate is up to nine games, and the card supplements the console’s internal storage.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Regular digital buyer

Pick 512GB when you want a comfortable library without moving to the largest capacity. Up to 18 games is the documented estimate, with the same up-to-880 MB/s read rating as the other sizes.

Digital-first player or shared household

Pick 1TB when several people use the console, when you keep games installed for quick access, or when you expect your library to continue growing. The up-to-36-game estimate provides the most headroom in this documented family.

What to expect as the 007 launch approaches

007 First Light is announced for Nintendo Switch 2 on March 18, 2027. Before downloading it, check the final eShop listing for the required available space and compare that requirement with your free internal and card storage. The listing, rather than an early estimate or a number copied from another platform, is the authoritative figure for the Switch 2 download.

If the game’s published requirement arrives after you buy the card, the 1TB recommendation remains useful because it is based on total library capacity. A single title rarely determines the right size as reliably as your expected collection, updates, downloadable content, and capture habits.

FAQ

Can I use my old original-Switch microSD card in Switch 2?

Not for storing Switch 2 games. Nintendo says Switch 2 is only compatible with microSD Express cards for this purpose, so an ordinary card from an original Switch does not meet the requirement.
