Buy the pass that contains the fighter or fighters you actually want. Fighters Pass Vol. 1 is the better choice for Joker, Hero, Banjo & Kazooie, Terry, or Byleth. Vol. 2 is the better choice for Min Min, Steve & Alex, Sephiroth, Pyra/Mythra, Kazuya, or Sora. Nintendo’s US listings checked October 13, 2026 price Vol. 1 at US$24.99 for five Challenger Packs and Vol. 2 at US$29.99 for six.
Each Challenger Pack adds one fighter, one stage, and music. The full Super Smash Bros. Ultimate game is required. If you want only one fighter, compare that character’s US$5.99 individual Challenger Pack with the pass rather than buying a bundle automatically.
The short answer: choose by roster, not by a supposed “best” pass
Neither pass is objectively stronger. Nintendo’s official product information establishes the contents and prices, but it does not rank fighters by competitive strength or player enjoyment. Your preferred lineup is therefore the decisive factor.

|---|---|---|---|---|
| Fighters Pass Vol. 1 | US$24.99 | Joker; Hero; Banjo & Kazooie; Terry; Byleth | Five stages, pack music, and the Rex Mii Fighter costume | Players who want at least one Vol. 1 fighter |
| Fighters Pass Vol. 2 | US$29.99 | Min Min; Steve & Alex; Sephiroth; Pyra/Mythra; Kazuya; Sora | Six stages, pack music, and the Ancient Soldier Mii Fighter costume | Players who want at least one Vol. 2 fighter |
Vol. 2 costs US$5 more at these listed prices and contains one additional Challenger Pack. That extra pack is useful only if its fighter, stage, music, or the larger lineup matters to you; it is not a reason by itself to ignore a Vol. 1 character you prefer.
#1 Best Overall
- New stages and fighters are joined by the combined rosters of every past Super Smash Bros. Game
- Challenge others anytime, anywhere, whether you're on the couch or on the go
- Play any way you want—locally, online, in TV mode, Tabletop mode, Handheld mode, or even with GameCube Controllers
- Fight faster and smarter with new and returning techniques, like the perfect shield and directional air dodge
- Face off in 2-4 player battles, or play against the computer
What Fighters Pass Vol. 1 includes
Vol. 1 contains five Challenger Packs. Nintendo describes a Challenger Pack as “1 new fighter, 1 new stage, and additional music tracks.” The pass also includes the Rex Mii Fighter costume listed with the bundle.
Joker
Joker is one of the five Vol. 1 fighters. Choose Vol. 1 if adding Joker to your roster is your main reason for buying downloadable content.
Hero
Hero is included in Vol. 1. The pass is the bundle to select if Hero is the character you are waiting to add.
Banjo & Kazooie
Banjo & Kazooie are part of Vol. 1. Their inclusion makes Vol. 1 the relevant purchase for players specifically seeking this duo.
Rank #2
Terry
Terry is a Vol. 1 fighter. If Terry is the only character that interests you, compare the individual Challenger Pack price with the bundle before checking out.
Byleth
Byleth completes the Vol. 1 fighter lineup. Players who want Byleth, or several of the five Vol. 1 characters, should start with this pass rather than Vol. 2.
What Fighters Pass Vol. 2 includes
Vol. 2 contains six Challenger Packs, one more than Vol. 1. Its bundle listing includes the Ancient Soldier Mii Fighter costume in addition to the six stages and pack music.
Min Min
Min Min is included in Vol. 2. Her presence makes Vol. 2 the appropriate bundle for players who specifically want her.
Steve & Alex
Steve & Alex are part of the Vol. 2 lineup. Select this pass when those characters are a priority.
Sephiroth
Sephiroth is one of the six Vol. 2 fighters. A preference for Sephiroth is sufficient reason to choose Vol. 2 over Vol. 1.
Pyra/Mythra
Pyra/Mythra are included in Vol. 2. They count as one Challenger Pack in the bundle’s six-pack total.
Kazuya
Kazuya is a Vol. 2 fighter. If Kazuya is your target, the individual pack or Vol. 2 are the relevant purchases.
Rank #4
- New stages and fighters are joined by the combined rosters of every past Super Smash Bros. game
- Play any way you want—locally, online, in TV mode, Tabletop mode, Handheld mode, or even with GameCube Controllers
- Fight faster and smarter with new and returning techniques, like the perfect shield and directional air dodge
Sora
Sora completes the Vol. 2 lineup. Players buying downloadable content primarily for Sora should choose Vol. 2 unless they want only his individual pack.
Pass prices versus buying Challenger Packs separately
Nintendo’s US store listing prices an individual Challenger Pack at US$5.99. The following arithmetic uses only those listed prices and does not include tax, regional currency conversion, or temporary promotions.
| Purchase pattern | Calculation at listed US prices | Listed total | Difference from the matching pass |
|---|---|---|---|
| Five Vol. 1 packs individually | 5 × US$5.99 | US$29.95 | US$4.96 above Vol. 1 |
| Fighters Pass Vol. 1 | Bundle price | US$24.99 | Baseline |
| Six Vol. 2 packs individually | 6 × US$5.99 | US$35.94 | US$5.95 above Vol. 2 |
| Fighters Pass Vol. 2 | Bundle price | US$29.99 | Baseline |
Those differences matter only when you want the whole matching lineup. Buying a pass for one desired fighter is not automatically the cheapest route: one individual pack is US$5.99, whereas either pass commits you to several packs. Conversely, if you expect to buy most of a pass’s packs, the bundle price is lower than purchasing the same packs one at a time at the listed US rate.
How to decide in common situations
You want one specific fighter
- Identify whether the character is in Vol. 1 or Vol. 2.
- Check the individual Challenger Pack listing at US$5.99.
- Compare that price with the applicable pass and decide whether the other fighters, stages, music, and Mii costume justify the additional cost.
- Confirm the current price on Nintendo’s purchase screen because listings and availability can change.
For example, someone interested only in Sora should compare Sora’s individual pack with Vol. 2, while someone interested only in Joker should compare Joker’s pack with Vol. 1. The pass becomes more compelling as the number of packs you would otherwise buy increases.
Best Value
- Challenger Pack 6 includes Min Min as a playable fighter, their stage, and a selection of music
- Challenger Pack 7 includes Steve & Alex as a playable fighter, their stage, and a selection of music
- Challenger Pack 8 includes Sephiroth as a playable fighter, their stage, and a selection of music
- Challenger Pack 9 includes Pyra/Mythra as a playable fighter, their stage, and a selection of music
- Challenger Pack 10 includes Kazuya Mishimia as a playable fighter, their stage and a selection of music
You want several fighters from one volume
Count the individual packs you would genuinely purchase, not every character you merely recognize. At the listed US prices, the bundle is cheaper than buying all five Vol. 1 packs or all six Vol. 2 packs separately. If your desired characters are split between volumes, compare the cost of the specific individual packs; neither pass contains fighters from the other volume.
You are undecided and value extra content
Every Challenger Pack contributes a stage and additional music as well as a fighter. Vol. 1 supplies five of each pack’s stage-and-music additions plus the Rex Mii Fighter costume. Vol. 2 supplies six plus the Ancient Soldier Mii Fighter costume. Choose the volume whose stages, music, and bonus costume accompany fighters you are most likely to use; the number of items alone does not establish which content is more enjoyable.
You already own one or more packs
List the packs you already own, then compare the cost of the remaining individual packs with the pass price shown for your account. The published bundle prices are not a personalized valuation of content you already possess, and the official price information does not establish a universal prorated adjustment. Review the final Nintendo checkout screen before purchasing so you can see exactly what your account is being offered.

You must own the base game
The downloadable content requires the full Super Smash Bros. Ultimate game. A Fighter Pass is an expansion, not a standalone version of the game, so buying a pass does not replace the base-game purchase.
Other players on the same console
Nintendo Support states that downloadable content purchased by one player on a console is available to other players on that console. This applies to the console-sharing situation described by Nintendo; it does not mean the purchase automatically transfers to unrelated consoles or accounts.
Piranha Plant is not part of Fighters Pass Vol. 1
Nintendo Support explicitly says, “The Fighters Pass does not include the Piranha Plant fighter.” Do not count Piranha Plant when comparing the five Vol. 1 Challenger Packs. Treat it as separate from the two Fighter Pass bundles and check its current availability and price independently if you want that fighter.
Purchase checklist
- Confirm that your preferred fighter is in the volume you are considering.
- Check whether you need one individual Challenger Pack or several.
- Use the current US Nintendo listing at checkout; the prices above were checked October 13, 2026 and can change.
- Make sure you own the full game and are buying on the intended Nintendo account.
- If another player will use the DLC, verify that the purchase is on the console covered by Nintendo’s sharing guidance.
- Check your existing DLC ownership before selecting a bundle.
- Remember that each pack includes a stage and music, while each volume also lists one Mii Fighter costume.
Final recommendation
Choose Fighters Pass Vol. 1 for Joker, Hero, Banjo & Kazooie, Terry, or Byleth. Choose Fighters Pass Vol. 2 for Min Min, Steve & Alex, Sephiroth, Pyra/Mythra, Kazuya, or Sora. At Nintendo’s US prices checked October 13, 2026, Vol. 2 is the larger bundle at US$29.99 for six packs, while Vol. 1 is US$24.99 for five. If your interest is limited to one character, buy the individual US$5.99 pack unless the other bundle content earns the difference for you.
