Steam handles demo alerts and demo clutter with separate controls. To stop availability alerts, sign in and change the demo-related category in Account Details → Notification Settings → email preferences (the exact label may vary). To remove a demo entry, open your Library, right-click the demo, then choose Manage → Remove from account. Uninstalling a demo also removes it from the library. If you want to keep access without seeing the item in your normal list, use Hide, a collection, a custom shelf, or a dynamic collection instead.
What Steam’s demo controls actually change
There are four different outcomes, and each uses a different setting:
- Notifications: controls whether Steam sends certain email or mobile alerts when a demo first becomes available.
- Account removal: deletes the demo’s license entry from your account library.
- Local cleanup: uninstalling removes the installed demo and, according to Valve, automatically removes the demo from the library.
- Organization: hiding or sorting changes how the item appears in your Library without removing the account entry.
These controls are independent. Turning off email does not remove a demo, and hiding a demo does not change Steam’s notification preferences. Library cleanup also does not guarantee that the demo disappears from Steam’s store discovery pages.
How to stop Steam demo notifications
What causes a demo alert
In a July 25, 2024 Steam announcement, Valve said Steam can send an email and a mobile notification when a demo becomes available for the first time for a game on your wishlist or from a developer you follow. The announcement describes this as an availability alert, not a message for every demo on the store.

- When you access your Visa Virtual eGift Card for the first time, you’ll need to register your name, address, phone number, and email address via activationspot.com. These details should also be used as your billing address for online purchases, as many merchants require address verification for purchase authorization.
- This Visa Virtual eGift Card is non-reloadable. No cash or ATM access. Visa Virtual eGift Cards are emailed active.
- Funds do not expire but your Visa Virtual eGift Card has a ‘valid thru’ date (9 years from date of purchase). If funds remain after this date has passed, please call the Toll Free number found on your Visa Virtual eGift Card for a replacement card. A one-time purchase fee applies at the time of checkout.
- This item is not eligible for refund, resale, or return. Available for sale within the United States only. Not available to residents of Puerto Rico, Hawaii, New Mexico, South Dakota, West Virginia and the US Virgin Islands.
The setting applies to the relevant email preference category. Changing it affects alerts sent through that category; it does not alter your wishlist, followed developers, Library contents, or store recommendations.
Turn off the relevant email category
- Sign in to Steam in a browser or the Steam client.
- Open your account menu and choose Account Details.
- Open Notification Settings, then the account’s email preferences.
- Find the preference covering demo availability or similar Steam event notifications.
- Clear that preference and save the change if Steam presents a save button.
Steam’s account pages can change labels and may require another sign-in. If you do not see the exact wording above, stay in Notification Settings and inspect each email category rather than changing Library settings. Valve’s documented opt-out is through email preferences.
What this opt-out does not do
- It does not remove installed demo files.
- It does not remove a demo license from your Library.
- It does not hide demos from Steam’s store pages, charts, or tag listings.
- It does not necessarily suppress unrelated Steam mobile notifications controlled elsewhere in the app.
If your goal is a clean Library, use one of the item-level actions in the next sections after changing notifications.
How to remove a demo from your Steam account
Use “Remove from account” for a permanent license cleanup
Valve’s Steam documentation gives this path: Library → right-click the demo → Manage → Remove from account. This is the appropriate choice when you no longer want the demo’s entry associated with your account.
- Open the Library tab.
- Locate the demo. You can use the Library search box if it is not visible in the current view.
- Right-click the demo’s tile or title.
- Choose Manage.
- Select Remove from account and confirm any prompt.
Removal is different from hiding: the account entry is being removed rather than merely excluded from a view. If you later want to play that demo, you should expect to find its store page and claim or install it again when Valve makes it available.

When the command is missing
The command is attached to the demo item’s Manage menu. If you right-click a parent game instead of its separate demo entry, the option may not appear. Switch to the demo’s own Library tile, expand the item list if your layout groups related products, and open Manage again.
Interface wording can differ by client version and operating system. Valve’s documentation uses “right-clicking → manage → remove from account”; look for the equivalent command under the item’s Manage submenu if capitalization or punctuation differs.
Uninstalling a demo: the quickest local cleanup
What uninstall does
Valve states that when a demo is uninstalled, it is automatically removed from the game Library. This makes uninstall useful when you have finished testing a demo and want both the local files and the Library entry cleared.
- Open Library and select the installed demo.
- Use the demo’s context menu or its page-level controls to choose Uninstall.
- Confirm the uninstall dialog and wait for Steam to finish removing the files.
- Return to the Library and search for the demo to verify that its entry is gone.
Uninstalling is not the same as changing notification preferences. It also differs from hiding: uninstall removes the local installation and Valve says it removes the Library entry, while hiding leaves the account item available but out of the normal view.
If the demo still appears after uninstalling
- Allow the download task to finish or cancel cleanly before checking the Library.
- Restart Steam so the Library cache refreshes.
- Search for the exact demo title; a similarly named full game may be a separate entry.
- If the item remains, use Manage → Remove from account on the demo entry.
These steps address the documented Library behavior; they do not promise removal from Steam’s store discovery surfaces.

Hide a demo without deleting it
Choose Hide when you want the demo out of your ordinary Library view but may want to retain the account entry. Steam’s Library documentation describes hiding as part of its tools for exploring, sorting, hiding, and featuring games.
- Right-click the demo in the Library.
- Choose Manage and then Hide this game (the exact wording may vary).
- To find it later, open the Library’s hidden-games view or search for the title and reverse the hide action.
Hiding does not uninstall files and does not remove the demo from your account. It is therefore reversible, unlike account removal.
Use collections and shelves to separate demos
Manual collections
Create a collection named “Demos” or “To test” and place demo entries there. Collections let you keep demos available while separating them from your main game list. This is useful if you regularly participate in events such as Steam Next Fest and do not want to delete every trial after installing it.
- In the Library, open the collections area or create-collection command.
- Name the collection according to your workflow, such as Demos, Installed demos, or Finished tests.
- Add demo entries by dragging them into the collection or using the item’s collection command.
- Use the collection view when you want to review demos without mixing them with purchased games.
Custom shelves
A custom shelf places a chosen group in a prominent, controlled section of the Library. Use one for demos you intend to try soon, then move completed items to another collection or remove them from the account.
Dynamic collections
Steam also offers dynamic collections that automatically organize games using store tags and filters. They can reduce manual sorting as your Library grows. Valve’s documentation does not promise a universal demo-only filter, however, so a dynamic collection may include or exclude items according to its available metadata rather than a definitive “demo” property.

There is no documented global “hide every demo” switch
The official Steam pages reviewed for this topic do not describe one setting that hides all demos at once. Steam instead provides per-item removal and hiding plus collection and shelf tools. If you have many demos, the practical approach is to process them in batches:
- Search the Library for likely demo entries.
- Uninstall entries you no longer need installed.
- Use Manage → Remove from account for demos you no longer want associated with the account.
- Hide or place remaining demos in a dedicated collection.
- Use a dynamic collection or shelf to keep future items from overwhelming the main view.
This combination gives you control without assuming a global switch that Steam does not document.

Removing or hiding a demo in your Library does not necessarily prevent Steam from showing demos elsewhere. Valve says demos can appear in the same sections and lists as free games, including homepage charts such as New & Trending and New on Steam, as well as relevant tag and category pages.

| Where you see the demo | Control that applies | Result |
|---|---|---|
| Email or mobile availability alert | Account notification and email preferences | Changes alert delivery; does not alter Library entries |
| Your normal Library list | Hide, collections, custom shelves, or dynamic collections | Changes organization and prominence; does not necessarily remove the account item |
| Installed files | Uninstall | Removes local files; Valve says the demo is then removed from the Library |
| Account license entry | Manage → Remove from account | Removes the unwanted demo entry from the account |
| Steam homepage, charts, tags, and categories | Store discovery systems | May still show demos even after Library cleanup |
Which action should you choose?
| Your goal | Best first action | What remains |
|---|---|---|
| Stop new demo availability emails | Disable the relevant category in Account Details → Notification Settings → email preferences | Library and store visibility remain unchanged |
| Delete an unwanted demo entry | Library → right-click → Manage → Remove from account | It is no longer kept as that account entry; store discovery is unaffected |
| Free local disk space and clear the entry | Uninstall the demo | Valve says uninstall also removes it from the Library |
| Keep access but reduce visual clutter | Hide the demo | The account item and installed files can remain |
| Keep several demos together | Create a collection or custom shelf | Items remain available and organized |
| Automate broad sorting | Use a dynamic collection with tags and filters | Results depend on Steam’s available metadata, not a guaranteed demo-only rule |
A low-maintenance cleanup routine
For a Library that stays manageable, separate notification control from item maintenance:
- Set the email preference once so demo availability alerts match your tolerance.
- After trying a demo, uninstall it if you no longer need its files.
- Remove the account entry when you are certain you will not return to it.
- Hide demos you want to retain but do not want in the default list.
- Keep active trials in a collection or shelf with a clear name.
- Review the collection after events that release many demos, such as Steam Next Fest.
Steam says thousands of playable demos launch each year and millions of players try them, often during Steam Next Fest. A routine matters because discovery volume can continue even when your personal Library is tidy.
Common misunderstandings and fixes
“I turned off notifications, so why is the demo still in my Library?”
Notification preferences affect alerts, not Library contents. Remove, uninstall, hide, or organize the item separately.
“I hid the demo, but I still see it in a store chart.”
Hiding is a Library display control. Valve says demos can appear in the same discovery sections as free games, so store visibility is a separate system.
“I uninstalled the demo, but I expected to keep the Library entry.”
Valve documents the opposite behavior: uninstalling a demo automatically removes it from the Library. Use hiding or a collection if retaining the entry is important.
“The menu names do not match these instructions.”
Steam’s interface changes over time. Look under the demo’s Manage menu for removal or hiding, and under your account’s Notification Settings for email preferences. The documented functions are more stable than the exact capitalization or placement of labels.
