Start with Steam Machine’s supported 1080p baseline, then change resolution only if your connected display or a particular game gives you a reason. Valve uses 1080p for Steam Machine Verified testing and labels it Default in the display-resolution menu. After that, adjust the individual game’s graphics options according to your goal—smoother performance, sharper image quality, or a balance of both.

There is no Valve-approved universal order for ray tracing, shadows, anti-aliasing, upscaling, frame caps, or other game-level options. Their effect depends on the game, the display, and the Steam Machine settings. Treat the following as a controlled way to find the right settings rather than a promise that one preset works everywhere.

Begin with the supported 1080p baseline

Valve Support identifies 1080p as Steam Machine’s system-default game resolution. In the same guidance, Valve says that 1080p is used for Steam Machine Verified testing and is intended to provide a good out-of-the-box gameplay experience. That makes it the sensible starting point when you have not yet tested a game on your particular display.

The default is a starting point, not a requirement. A different resolution may be more appropriate when the connected screen has a different native mode, when text or interface elements look wrong, or when a specific game behaves better at another output. Make that decision after confirming what the display and game actually present, rather than changing several graphics options during the first launch.

What “Default” means in practice

Steam Machine’s display controls can show 1080p as Default. That label refers to the system’s default game-resolution choice; it does not mean every game renders every internal effect at identical quality. Individual games can expose their own resolution and quality controls, and their defaults can differ.

Why Verified testing matters

Because Valve uses 1080p when testing Steam Machine Verified titles, it is the best common reference point for troubleshooting. If a game has an unexpected result, first establish what happens at that baseline. You can then identify whether the change came from resolution, another in-game option, or the display’s own presentation settings.

Choose the right resolution control: global or per game

There are two places to change resolution. The global control establishes the system-level display choice; a game’s own graphics menu can apply a separate choice for that title. Use the narrowest scope that solves the problem.

Control scope Where to change it Best use What to verify afterward
Global display setting Settings > Display When the output should change consistently across games or the display is not being driven at the desired mode Check the desktop and at least one game for scaling, readability, refresh behavior, and whether the display accepts the mode
Per-game setting The individual game’s graphics or display menu When one title needs a different resolution from the rest of your library Confirm that the game keeps the selected mode after restarting and that menus and gameplay remain correctly scaled

Changing the global setting

  1. Open Steam Machine Settings.
  2. Select Display.
  3. Open the display-resolution dropdown and identify the entry labeled Default, which represents the 1080p baseline.
  4. Keep that choice unless the connected display or a tested game gives you a specific reason to use another mode.
  5. If you select a different resolution, apply it and inspect the resulting picture before changing any game-level options.

The exact list of available modes depends on the connected display and the system’s current display configuration. If a mode produces an unreadable interface, an obviously scaled image, or no useful improvement, return to the previous selection before continuing.

Changing one game only

  1. Launch the game and open its graphics, video, or display settings.
  2. Locate the game-resolution control and compare it with the system choice.
  3. Change only the resolution first, apply the setting, and observe a repeatable section of gameplay.
  4. Restart the game if it does not immediately redraw correctly; some titles do not fully apply display changes until relaunch.
  5. Leave the global setting unchanged when the issue is limited to this one title.

This separation prevents a fix for one game from unexpectedly changing every other game’s output.

After resolution, tune the game’s own graphics menu by goal

Valve’s support guidance does not rank game-level settings in a universal sequence. A setting that is expensive in one title may have a small effect in another, and a visual feature can be implemented differently between games. The reliable method is to define the result you want, change one relevant control, and test under the same type of gameplay each time.

If your priority is smoother performance

  • Keep the supported resolution while you establish a baseline. Changing resolution and several quality options together makes the cause of an improvement impossible to identify.
  • Use the game’s performance-oriented options one at a time. Depending on the title, these may include shadow quality, ray-tracing features, anti-aliasing, upscaling, a frame cap, or frame-generation controls.
  • Apply the change, play a repeatable scene, and note whether motion, camera turns, and busy areas feel more consistent.
  • Keep a change only when it improves the result you care about without introducing an unacceptable image artifact or control problem.

This is a testing discipline, not a claim that shadows, ray tracing, or another named option is always the first thing to lower. The game’s own implementation and your target display determine the trade-off.

If your priority is image quality

  • Confirm that the game is using the intended output resolution before judging fine detail.
  • Inspect text, thin geometry, foliage, distant objects, and moving edges in a consistent scene.
  • Adjust anti-aliasing, upscaling, sharpening, or other image-reconstruction controls only after you know the resolution is correct.
  • Check high-cost effects such as ray tracing and shadows for the particular visual features you actually notice; retaining every effect at its highest level is not automatically the best-looking result on every display.

Image quality is partly subjective, so document the choice that looks better to you at normal viewing distance rather than relying on a preset name alone.

If you want a balance

Start at the baseline resolution, retain the game’s default quality choices, and make a single targeted change when you see a specific problem. For example, address distracting shadow flicker with the game’s shadow or reconstruction controls instead of immediately lowering the entire preset. If the game remains inconsistent, compare a lower resolution or a broader quality change only after the targeted adjustment has been evaluated.

Use HDR and SDR content brightness for display presentation

Steam Machine exposes HDR and SDR content brightness under Settings > Display > Advanced. These are presentation controls for how content appears on the connected display. They are not identified by Valve as guaranteed performance improvements.

When to open Advanced display settings

  • Use HDR when you are configuring the display’s high-dynamic-range presentation and the display supports the mode you intend to use.
  • Use SDR content brightness when standard-dynamic-range material looks too dim or too bright in an HDR-oriented setup.
  • Change one presentation control at a time, then inspect both the game and the surrounding SteamOS interface for clipped highlights, crushed dark areas, or an overall brightness shift.

If your problem is stutter, inconsistent frame delivery, or a game that fails to hold its target, HDR and SDR brightness are the wrong first suspects. Return to the game’s resolution and graphics controls instead.

Account for the display, SteamOS, and the game together

Valve cautions that picture-quality choices depend on Steam Machine settings, the connected display, and the individual game. That is why a setting that looks correct on one television or monitor may need adjustment on another, and why a title’s default behavior should not be generalized to the rest of your library.

Check the connected display first

Write down the display mode you are trying to use and verify the image after applying it. Look for correct aspect ratio, readable interface text, and an image that is not being unexpectedly cropped or surrounded by borders. If the display does not present the selected mode properly, restore the previous global setting and try the game-level control instead.

Keep system and game changes separate

When troubleshooting, record whether each change was made in Settings > Display, in the game’s menu, or under Display > Advanced. This simple record prevents you from mistaking a display-presentation change for a rendering-performance change.

Allow for changing software defaults

SteamOS interface details and defaults can change with updates. If a label or menu location differs from the wording above, look for the same three functional areas: the system’s Display page, the game’s own graphics menu, and the Advanced display controls for HDR and SDR brightness.

A practical first-launch procedure

Use this sequence whenever you install or first test a game:

  1. Connect the intended display and open Settings > Display.
  2. Confirm the 1080p entry labeled Default before making any change.
  3. Launch the game with its own defaults and identify a repeatable scene, such as a busy area, a combat encounter, or a camera pan.
  4. Decide whether your priority is smoother performance, higher image quality, or a compromise.
  5. Change the game’s resolution only if the display or that title gives you a concrete reason.
  6. Adjust one game-level option at a time, applying each change before testing again.
  7. Use Settings > Display > Advanced only for HDR or SDR brightness presentation issues.
  8. Keep the setting that solves the observed problem, and undo changes that do not produce a visible or useful improvement.

Troubleshooting by symptom

The whole interface looks wrong

Check the global resolution under Settings > Display. Restore the 1080p Default choice if the new mode causes scaling or readability problems. Then relaunch the affected game and inspect its own display setting.

Only one game looks soft or distorted

Open that game’s graphics menu and verify its resolution independently of the global setting. Apply a single change, restart if necessary, and compare the same scene. Do not alter the system-wide mode unless other games show the same issue.

The picture is too bright, too dim, or has poor highlight detail

Open Settings > Display > Advanced and review HDR and SDR content brightness. These controls address presentation; they do not replace game-level performance tuning.

Performance changes after a game update

Re-establish the baseline at 1080p and the game’s current defaults. Then retest one option at a time. A game update can change its defaults or the way an option is implemented, so an earlier setting choice is not necessarily still optimal.

What Valve’s hardware comparison does—and does not—tell you

Valve’s developer documentation describes Steam Machine as running SteamOS with a discrete, semi-custom AMD desktop-class CPU and GPU. Valve also characterizes it as roughly six times more powerful than Steam Deck. That is a broad platform comparison, not a measured frame-rate guarantee for a specific game, resolution, display, or graphics preset.

Statement How to use it What it cannot establish
Steam Machine is described as roughly six times more powerful than Steam Deck It provides broad context for the platform’s positioning It does not predict a particular game’s frame rate or prove that every high-cost effect should be enabled
1080p is the default and Verified-test resolution It gives you a consistent starting point for setup and troubleshooting It does not make 1080p mandatory for every display or title

Common mistakes to avoid

  • Changing everything at once: You lose the ability to identify which setting helped or hurt.
  • Treating Verified as a maximum-quality certificate: The 1080p test baseline is a reference point, not a promise that every visual option is at its highest setting.
  • Using HDR brightness to solve a frame-rate problem: HDR and SDR brightness change presentation, not a guaranteed rendering workload.
  • Applying a one-game fix globally: Keep a title-specific problem in that title’s settings when possible.
  • Assuming a named option always has the same cost: Ray tracing, shadows, anti-aliasing, upscaling, frame caps, and frame generation vary by implementation, so test them in context.

The shortest reliable answer is therefore: leave the system at 1080p Default, verify the connected display, change resolution only at the scope that needs it, and then tune the individual game one setting at a time for your chosen goal. Reserve HDR and SDR content brightness for appearance problems, and treat Valve’s hardware comparison as context rather than a performance promise.
