To pursue 1440p at 60 FPS on Steam Machine, disable ray tracing first, then use the game’s FSR upscaling and reduce its most expensive quality effects. Treat frame generation as a separate option, not a substitute for a 60-FPS base render. There is no universal preset: test demanding scenes, check frame-time consistency and latency, and distinguish 1440p output from native 1440p rendering.
What “1440p at 60 FPS” actually means
Three different numbers can be hidden behind a game’s resolution and frame-rate labels:
- Output resolution: the signal sent to the display, such as 2560×1440.
- Internal rendering resolution: the resolution at which the game draws its 3D image before any upscaling.
- Displayed frame rate: the frames shown by the counter, which can include generated frames rather than fully rendered game frames.
A game can therefore output 1440p while rendering internally below 1440p with FSR. It can also show close to 60 FPS after frame generation while the game’s underlying render rate remains around 30 FPS. Those modes can be useful, but neither is equivalent to native 1440p rendered at a steady 60 FPS.
For a meaningful comparison, record the output resolution, internal resolution or upscaler mode, graphics preset, ray-tracing state, average FPS, lows or frame-time behavior, and whether frame generation is enabled. Use the same game version and the same demanding scene for both configurations.

What Steam Machine Verified promises—and what it does not
Valve’s 2026 Steamworks presentation defines the Machine Verified performance target as 30 FPS at 1080p. It also says the program does not test display resolution or legibility. A Verified badge is therefore not a promise of 1440p, 60 FPS, native rendering, or even a particular quality preset.
Valve has separately described a performance goal for Steam Machine. PC Gamer reported Valve’s statement that, in its testing, most Steam titles played well at 4K and 60 FPS with FSR enabled. Valve also qualified that claim: some games need more upscaling, and a lower frame rate with variable refresh rate (VRR) may be preferable while preserving a 1080p internal resolution. Valve engineer Yazan Aldehayyat described the benchmark as having enough performance to play every Steam game at 4K60 when some form of upscaling such as FSR is used. These are manufacturer goals and test claims, not a guarantee for every title, patch or graphics setting.
Valve’s product information also warns that specifications may change before availability. SteamOS and Proton compatibility can affect a game’s result independently of its graphics sliders, so evaluate the installed game and software versions you actually use.

1. Turn off ray tracing before changing everything else
Ray tracing is the first setting to disable when a demanding game misses its target. Independent Cyberpunk 2077 testing illustrates why, although the exact penalty depends on the game and scene. PC Gamer measured an average of 28 FPS at 1440p Medium with ray tracing enabled, FSR set to Quality and frame generation disabled. GamersNexus recorded 21 FPS in a 1080p Cyberpunk ray-tracing test; after a later tested patch, that specific result became 22.8 FPS.

- Quality Visuals: The KG271U 27" IPS monitor with 2560 x 1440 QHD resolution in a 16:9 aspect ratio presents stunning, high-quality images with excellent detail. The zero-frame design does away with the thick frames found on conventional monitors freeing up precious screen space.
- AMD FreeSync Technology: Say “goodbye” to stuttering and tearing. With AMD FreeSync, the monitor’s frames are synced with the graphics card’s frames, which eliminates screen tearing and provide the smoothest gaming experience.
- Up to 180Hz: The 180Hz refresh rate speeds up the frames per second to deliver an ultra-smooth 2D motion scene. With a rapid refresh rate of up to 180Hz, Acer Gaming Monitors shorten the time it takes for frame rendering, lower input lag and provide gamers an excellent in-game experience.
- Responsive!!: Up to 0.5ms GTG (Gray to Gray) response time enhanced gamers’ in-game experience. No matter the fast-moving action or any dramatic transitions will be all rendered smoothly without the annoying effects of smearing or ghosting with KG271U Gaming Monitor.
- New Depths of Color Accuracy: is monitor is ideal for color-critical projects producing accurate colors, supporting DCI-P3 95%. An amazing monitor for graphic designers, photographers, and film editors.
Those figures are not a universal percentage loss for Steam Machine. They show that ray-traced lighting, reflections and shadows can consume enough performance in a demanding title to make 60 FPS unrealistic. Disable ray tracing completely, retest the same scene, and only add individual ray-tracing effects back if the resulting frame time leaves headroom.
2. Select an upscaler mode deliberately
If the game offers AMD FSR, choose a sensible quality mode after selecting a baseline preset. FSR renders the image internally below the chosen output resolution and reconstructs it for the display. Quality mode generally preserves more detail than Performance mode but costs more rendering time; the practical choice is game-specific.
Do not describe “1440p with FSR” as native 1440p unless the game is actually rendering at 2560×1440. Note the FSR mode alongside the output resolution in any benchmark or settings report. If the game remains below target, move one step toward more aggressive upscaling and inspect fine foliage, text, motion and shimmering—not just the FPS counter.

After ray tracing and upscaling, lower the quality options that dominate the particular game’s frame time. A single global preset can hide large differences between shadows, volumetric effects, reflections, ambient effects, crowds and other scene settings. The available evidence supports game-specific compromises rather than one fixed ranking that applies to every title.

Change one group of options at a time and keep a written record. If a reduction produces little improvement, restore it and test another costly option. Preserve texture quality when memory allows if your priority is image detail; lower effects that affect every pixel or require substantial lighting and simulation work when your priority is frame rate. This approach avoids sacrificing visual quality in settings that were not limiting performance.
4. Use frame generation only after the base rate is acceptable
Frame generation inserts synthetic frames between traditionally rendered frames. It can make a counter approach 60, but it does not double the game’s input-sampling rate or remove the work required to render the base frames. A low base rate can still feel sluggish, and generated images can show artifacts around moving objects, particles or fine geometry.
PC Gamer reported 58–61 FPS in Cyberpunk 2077 at 4K using Medium settings, ray tracing off, FSR Performance and 2× frame generation. The review said the underlying rate was around 30 FPS and noted added latency and image artifacts. Treat that result as a specific configuration, not evidence that every game will feel like native 60 FPS.
Enable frame generation only after checking that the non-generated rate is stable enough for your controls. Compare input response and motion clarity in a busy scene, and turn it off if latency or artifacts are more distracting than the smoother counter.

A practical procedure for reaching 1440p/60
- Choose a repeatable stress scene. Use a crowded area, combat encounter, large outdoor view or other section that consistently produces the lowest performance. A quiet corridor can conceal a problem that appears in normal play.
- Start from a documented baseline. Record the game version, SteamOS or Proton version, output resolution, preset, ray-tracing state, FSR mode, frame-generation state and average plus low FPS. Keep the same display refresh and VRR settings for every run.
- Disable ray tracing. Apply the change without altering other options and repeat the same scene. This isolates the largest likely cost in a demanding title.
- Set the output to 2560×1440 and choose FSR Quality. Verify the game’s internal-resolution indicator if it provides one. If the title does not expose that value, label the result as upscaled 1440p rather than native rendering.
- Adjust costly effects in small groups. Lower the options that improve the test scene’s frame time, then retest. Keep textures or other settings that improve image quality without materially changing performance when memory usage remains stable.
- Check the lows and frame times. A 60-FPS average can conceal pauses or drops into the 30s. Prefer a configuration with consistent frame pacing in demanding scenes over one with a higher average but severe spikes.
- Try a more aggressive FSR mode if necessary. Inspect text, foliage, hair, particles and motion for reconstruction artifacts before accepting the setting.
- Evaluate frame generation last. Compare controls and image stability with it enabled and disabled. Report the base FPS separately from the generated display rate.
- Use VRR when a locked 60 is unrealistic. A stable lower rate with variable refresh can look and feel better than frequent swings around 60, particularly when preserving a higher internal resolution matters more than the counter.
What published tests tell you about the target
| Source and condition | Reported result | How to interpret it |
|---|---|---|
| Valve Machine Verified target, 2026 presentation | 30 FPS at 1080p | A compatibility/performance floor, not a 1440p/60 guarantee; display resolution and legibility are not tested. |
| PC Gamer, Cyberpunk 2077; 1440p Medium, ray tracing on, FSR Quality, no frame generation | 28 FPS average | Shows how a demanding game can miss 60 even at 1440p when ray tracing is enabled. |
| GamersNexus, Cyberpunk 2077 ray-tracing test at 1080p | 21 FPS average; 22.8 FPS after the tested patch | Patch-specific results demonstrating the cost of ray tracing under that test setup. |
| PC Gamer, Cyberpunk 2077; 4K Medium, ray tracing off, FSR Performance, 2× frame generation | 58–61 FPS displayed; base rate around 30 FPS | Generated output can approach 60 while latency and artifacts remain, and the underlying render rate is much lower. |

Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. How to choose between image quality, latency and smoothness
When image quality is the priority
Keep ray tracing disabled if it is the dominant cost, use the highest FSR quality mode that sustains acceptable frame pacing, and prefer a lower but stable refresh target over aggressive upscaling. A 1440p output with a higher internal resolution and VRR may be preferable to a nominal 60-FPS counter produced by heavy reconstruction.
When responsiveness is the priority
Target a solid base frame rate before enabling frame generation. Disable ray tracing and lower costly effects until camera movement and input feel consistent. Generated frames can smooth animation, but they cannot make a 30-FPS input loop behave exactly like a native 60-FPS render.
When the display is fixed at 60 Hz
Use a frame-rate limit appropriate to the game’s stable performance rather than allowing large swings. If the title cannot hold 60, a consistent lower cap can avoid repeated hitching. If the display supports VRR, keep it enabled within its operating range and judge motion in the same demanding scenes used for testing.

Troubleshooting common results
The counter says 60, but controls feel slow
Check whether frame generation is enabled and record the base FPS with it disabled. If the base rate is near 30, reduce latency-sensitive settings, lower the graphics workload or accept a lower VRR target. Do not use the generated number alone to claim native 60-FPS performance.
1440p looks soft or shimmers
Confirm the FSR mode and internal resolution. Move from Performance to Quality if performance headroom permits, then inspect thin geometry, foliage, text and motion. If artifacts remain, lower another expensive effect instead of selecting a more aggressive upscaler.
Average FPS is high but gameplay stutters
Repeat the test in the busiest scene and examine frame-time consistency or lows. Restore any setting that causes large spikes when changed, and test a stable cap or VRR. Average FPS alone does not describe the pauses a player feels.

A setting change barely improves performance
Restore it and test another quality group. The limiting option differs by game, scene and software version; there is no guaranteed universal order after ray tracing and upscaling. Keep a log so that you do not trade image quality for an option that was not the bottleneck.
Bottom line for a 1440p setup
Begin with ray tracing off, output 2560×1440, and the best FSR mode that preserves clear motion. Lower the specific effects that dominate frame time, then verify lows and frame pacing in demanding scenes. Add frame generation only as an optional smoothness mode and report its base rate separately. Steam Machine Verified’s 30-FPS-at-1080p target and Valve’s qualified upscaling claims explain why 1440p/60 is a game-by-game tuning result, not a guaranteed console-style preset.
