Hawaii ranked first in Gallup’s latest full state-by-state well-being results located here: the 2018 ranking, published in 2019. It was also the only state to place in the top five for all five well-being elements. This is a historical result, not a 2026 ranking; Gallup’s current index page describes the measures but does not provide a newer full state table. See Gallup for its index information and publications.
What Gallup’s state well-being ranking says
Gallup’s 2018 results put Hawaii at No. 1 overall. Gallup also reported that Hawaii was the only state ranked among the top five in each of the five elements. The findings appeared in a 2019 Gallup publication covering 2018 data. Gallup’s 2018 state well-being results
The year matters: this is the latest full state-by-state well-being table identified here, not evidence of which state ranks highest today. Gallup’s current Wellbeing Index topic page describes the index and its elements, but does not show a newer full state ranking.
What Gallup measures as well-being
Gallup treats well-being as five connected dimensions, rather than a measure of income, health care, or happiness alone. Its current terminology uses “career,” formerly called “purpose.”

How the survey and ranking should be interpreted
Gallup says its index began in 2008 and reports information at national, state, and community levels. Its collection approach has changed over time, so results from different years should be treated as separate editions rather than combined into one continuous score series.

- Since 2020, Gallup says it has administered web surveys to its probability-based Gallup Panel, which it describes as approximately 100,000 adults.
- Gallup says it typically surveys approximately 5,000 U.S. adults per quarter and weights samples to address nonresponse and match demographic targets.

How the 2018 result compares with Gallup’s 2016 ranking
Gallup’s 2016 ranking is a useful dated comparison, but it is a different year and should not be merged with the 2018 results. In 2016, Hawaii ranked first, Alaska second, and South Dakota third. Gallup reported scores on a 0-to-100 scale, where 0 was the lowest possible well-being and 100 the highest.

Gallup and West Health published a separate 2025 ranking of states based on residents’ health-care experiences across cost, quality, and access. That ranking answers a narrower health-care question; it is not a newer edition of Gallup’s five-element well-being ranking and cannot establish which state currently leads that index.
