For most fixed homes, start with Starlink Standard. Its motorized self-orienting dish is designed for a permanent installation. For camping, RV stops, road trips, or off-grid work where weight and electricity matter, Starlink Mini is the practical first choice. Starlink Performance belongs to specialized remote, harsh-weather, high-vibration, fleet, and approved in-motion installations. Your service plan, country, sky visibility, power system, and mobility approval matter as much as the dish.
Quick answer: choose by deployment first
| Use case | Best starting point | Why | Check before ordering |
|---|---|---|---|
| Permanent house or stationary property | Starlink Standard | Motorized self-orienting operation and a format suited to fixed mounting | Residential plan availability, roof or pole location, clear sky view, cable route, and local installation requirements |
| Camping, RV stops, road trips, and occasional travel | Starlink Mini | 1.10 kg dish, compact dimensions, and 25–40 W average consumption | Roam eligibility, regional coverage, a reliable 12–48 V or compatible USB-C power setup, and an unobstructed sky view |
| Remote sites, harsh weather, high vibration, fleets, or approved mobility work | Starlink Performance | Starlink describes it for resilient connectivity in demanding and in-motion environments | Regional service approval, installation engineering, power, mounting, and whether the specialized hardware is justified |
Do not choose on headline download speed alone. Starlink says users typically experience 25–220 Mbps downloads, with a majority over 100 Mbps, but actual results vary by location, time of day, plan precedence, network conditions, weather, obstructions, installation, cabling, and the quality of the connected device.
What the three dishes are designed to do
Starlink Mini: portable connectivity with a small power budget
The 2025 Starlink Mini specification sheet lists a dish measuring 298.5 × 259 mm and weighing 1.10 kg. It has a 110° field of view, IP67 Type 4 protection, and an average consumption of 25–40 W. Software-assisted manual orienting helps you position it without the motorized self-orientation used by Standard.

Those figures make Mini easier to carry between campsites, store in an RV, and run from a modest battery or vehicle electrical system. Portability does not remove the basic satellite requirements: the dish still needs a broad, unobstructed view of the sky, a stable location, an intact cable, and continuous power while in use. Trees, buildings, cliffs, and roof structures can cause interruptions even when the terminal itself is working normally.

Starlink Standard: the default fixed-home format
The 2025 Standard specification sheet describes a motorized, self-orienting electronic phased-array dish. It lists a 2.9 kg dish weight and 50–75 W average consumption. That extra mass and power draw are reasonable trade-offs when the terminal will stay at one home, cabin, or business location and you want the dish to orient itself after installation.
Standard is the natural starting point for Residential service. Plan availability, local rules, roof structure, pole or wall-mount options, cable length, and the route to the router should be checked before you select a mounting point. The cited sheet lists IP54 protection, so the installation should be planned around the specified enclosure and the environmental conditions at your site.
Starlink Performance: a specialist terminal
Starlink describes Performance as intended for remote, harsh, high-vibration, and in-motion environments. That makes it relevant to engineered remote sites, fleets, and mobility installations where ordinary residential equipment may not meet the mounting or environmental brief.
The material available for this comparison does not establish a universal Performance weight, power figure, price, or consumer-plan entitlement. Treat it as a deployment-specific system: confirm the exact regional hardware, service approval, mounting method, connector set, power requirements, and support terms before purchase. For an ordinary house or weekend trip, its specialized capabilities are likely unnecessary.

Home or travel: a practical decision process
Choose Standard for a normal house
- Confirm that Residential service is offered at the address and review the current local plan terms.
- Walk the property with the Starlink obstruction view in mind. Select a roof, pole, wall, or ground location with the widest sustained sky view.
- Plan the cable route before drilling or fixing a mount. Avoid sharp bends, pinch points, standing water, and locations where vehicles or doors can damage the cable.
- Check the structure and local requirements for the selected mount. A 2.9 kg dish is only part of the load; wind forces, brackets, mast length, and the building substrate also matter.
- Place the router where Wi-Fi coverage and power access are practical, then test from the rooms and devices that matter.
Standard is a better permanent-home format because its motorized orientation reduces the need to reposition the dish manually. It still cannot overcome a blocked sky view or poor internal Wi-Fi placement.
Choose Mini when transport and electricity dominate
- Verify that the destination supports the Roam service you intend to use, including any country, coastal, or in-motion restrictions.
- Measure your storage space and carry system against the 298.5 × 259 mm, 1.10 kg terminal specification.
- Provide a stable surface with a clear sky view. A campsite table, ground stand, or compatible temporary mount must not let the dish move in wind or be shaded by the vehicle.
- Design the power path. Mini accepts 12–48 V input; when using Starlink’s USB-C-to-barrel-jack accessory, the sheet specifies a 100 W USB-PD requirement.
- Pack cable protection, weather-safe connectors, and a way to secure the dish when you leave the site.
Mini’s lower average draw can extend battery runtime, but the runtime depends on usable battery watt-hours, conversion efficiency, other loads, temperature, and how long the terminal remains active.
Choose Performance only for an approved specialist deployment
Start with the operating environment, not the product name. If a vehicle, vessel, fleet, or remote facility will experience sustained vibration, severe exposure, or operation while moving, ask Starlink which Performance hardware and service plan are approved for your destination. Do not assume that a Mini or Standard purchased for stationary use can legally or technically provide service while the vehicle is moving.
Service plans determine where and how you can connect
Residential service
Residential is intended for a fixed home. The address, plan availability, and local terms are regional and can change, so use the current Starlink store and checkout for the destination country rather than relying on a price from another market or an older article.
Roam service
Starlink presents Roam for traveling, RVing, camping, and boating. The Roam 50 GB option is capped at 50 GB and permits pay-by-the-GB overage; the current overage rate and availability must be checked in the applicable regional terms.

Starlink’s public service information says in-motion use is available only in select areas. Eligibility can depend on the hardware, plan, geography, and regulatory approval. Before mounting any dish permanently to a moving vehicle, obtain confirmation for the exact country, route, terminal, and service plan. A dish that works while parked is not evidence that operation while driving is permitted.
Power planning for off-grid use
Use the published average draw as the starting point:
- Mini: 25–40 W average.
- Standard: 50–75 W average.
- Performance: the cited material does not state an average draw; obtain the figure for the exact model.
Theoretical runtime is usable battery watt-hours divided by total watts. For example, a 1,000 Wh battery feeding a 40 W Mini load would be 25 hours before conversion losses and before accounting for the router, phone charging, lighting, or the battery’s reserve. Real runtime will be shorter when an inverter or DC converter is involved.
Mini’s specification lists 12–48 V input. If you use the USB-C-to-barrel-jack accessory, provide the specified 100 W USB-PD capability; a USB-C port that merely fits the connector is not enough. Standard’s 50–75 W average draw generally calls for a larger battery and heavier-duty wiring than Mini. Match voltage, polarity, connector, fuse protection, and cable gauge to the exact hardware generation instead of adapting a random laptop or vehicle lead.

Installation checklist
- Sky view: use Starlink’s obstruction guidance and remove or avoid recurring tree, building, ridge, and vehicle blockages.
- Mount stability: select a mount rated for the dish and local wind exposure; temporary travel setups should be secured against tipping or movement.
- Cable routing: protect the cable from abrasion, crushing, sharp bends, water paths, and heat. Seal any wall penetration appropriately.
- Power: provide reliable voltage and enough capacity for the dish, router, and conversion losses. Do not mix accessories from different generations without confirming compatibility.
- Network placement: put the router where it can serve the required rooms or devices, or use a compatible wired network design when the layout demands it.
- Weather and maintenance: inspect mounts, connectors, and cable jackets after storms, moves, or off-road travel.
What affects speed and reliability
Starlink identifies installation environment, dish angle and field of view, weather, cable condition, and customer-device quality among factors that can affect performance. A clean speed test on one phone does not prove that every room, laptop, or streaming device will receive the same result.
Use the 25–220 Mbps typical download range as context, not a promise. Congestion, time of day, plan precedence, and network conditions can change results. Upload speed, latency, and short interruptions are also relevant for video calls, remote work, gaming, and cameras; select the plan and installation for the workload rather than judging only by the maximum download number.
Troubleshooting by symptom
Frequent interruptions or “obstructed” periods
- Move the dish away from trees, roof edges, awnings, and vehicle bodies.
- Recheck the obstruction view after relocating it; a small shift can expose a larger sky sector.
- Inspect the entire cable for crushing, cuts, loose seating, or water ingress.
Dish repeatedly loses power
- Measure the supply at the terminal under load, not only at the battery or wall outlet.
- Check that the adapter, fuse, converter, and connector match the exact hardware generation.
- For off-grid systems, compare the battery’s usable watt-hours with the dish’s average draw plus every other load.
Good dish signal but poor Wi-Fi in a room
- Test beside the router to separate satellite performance from local Wi-Fi coverage.
- Reposition the router away from metal cabinets, thick masonry, and competing electronics.
- Use a suitable wired access-point layout when the building is too large or heavily shielded for one router location.
Service works while parked but not while moving
Stop and verify in-motion eligibility. Starlink limits in-motion service to select areas, and the hardware and plan must be approved for that use. Do not attempt to bypass regional or plan restrictions by changing the mounting position.
Budget the complete installation, not just the dish
There is no single worldwide Starlink price. Hardware, Residential and Roam plans, data allowances, taxes, shipping, and availability vary by country and change over time. Build a local total from these line items:
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors- Terminal and current service activation
- Roof, pole, wall, ground, vehicle, or marine mount
- Standard-length or replacement cable that matches the generation
- Power supply, DC converter, USB-C accessory, battery, or inverter
- Weather sealing and cable-protection materials
- Professional mounting or electrical work, if required
- Ongoing plan charges and any Roam overage
Check the destination country’s current Starlink store and plan terms immediately before ordering. A low hardware price can be misleading if the required mount, long cable, power conversion, or installation labor is missing from the calculation.
Final selection checklist
- Where will it operate? Fixed home points to Standard; portable stops point to Mini; harsh or moving deployments require Performance review.
- Will it move while connected? Confirm regional in-motion approval before buying or permanently mounting anything.
- How much power is available? Compare Mini’s 25–40 W or Standard’s 50–75 W average with your battery and conversion system.
- Is the sky clear enough? No dish can compensate for persistent obstructions.
- Does the plan match the route? Check Residential versus Roam, international rules, coastal limits, data caps, and overage terms.
- Are every accessory and cable generation-compatible? Verify connectors, voltage, mount fit, and cable length before installation.
- What is the all-in cost? Include hardware, plan, mount, power, cabling, shipping, taxes, and labor for your country.
The Bottom Line
Buy Starlink Standard for a normal fixed home, Mini for portable and low-power travel, and Performance only when a demanding or approved mobility deployment justifies it. Confirm the local plan, sky view, power design, accessory generation, and in-motion rules before paying.
