For a straightforward, free SSH connection on Windows 11, start with Microsoft’s built-in OpenSSH client: try ssh in a terminal, and install the OpenSSH Client optional feature if it is missing. Choose a graphical client instead if you want saved sessions or an integrated SFTP file browser. Among the options covered here, Bitvise has the clearest combination of Windows 11 support and a publisher-stated free license for organizational use; MobaXterm’s free edition is for personal use, and Xshell’s free license is limited to home and school use.

There is no universal best: the right choice depends on whether you prefer commands or a GUI, need file transfer or tunneling, and what license applies to your use. The options below distinguish established product information from candidates whose current details need checking.

How to choose an SSH client for Windows 11

SSH clients connect to remote systems over the Secure Shell protocol. On Windows 11, a separate download is not always necessary: Microsoft documents OpenSSH for Windows, including the ssh client. A graphical application is useful when you want saved connections, tabs, or file transfer in the same interface.

  • Prefer commands and OpenSSH configuration? Start with Windows OpenSSH and Windows Terminal.
  • Want a graphical SFTP browser and terminal? Consider Bitvise or MobaXterm, checking the applicable license.
  • Need session organization or tunneling controls? Compare the specific GUI features and license terms rather than assuming every client includes the same tools.

Windows Terminal is a terminal interface, not a separate SSH implementation. It can provide tabs and panes for command-line tools such as OpenSSH.

8 SSH clients to consider

1. Windows OpenSSH with Windows Terminal — best built-in starting point

Microsoft documents OpenSSH for Windows 11. Its toolset includes ssh for connections, ssh-keygen for key generation, ssh-agent and ssh-add for agent workflows, plus sftp and scp for file transfer. Use it when you are comfortable with commands and want the OpenSSH toolchain rather than a separate session manager.

Availability can depend on the Windows installation. Open a terminal and run ssh; if the command is unavailable, check Windows Optional Features for OpenSSH Client. Windows Terminal can make multiple terminal sessions easier to manage with tabs and panes, but it does not replace or change the SSH client.

2. Bitvise SSH Client — best verified GUI option for broad use

Bitvise says its client supports Windows 11 and is free for all types of use, including organizations. Its feature list includes terminal emulation, public-key authentication, graphical SFTP, and tunneling. It is a strong candidate if you want a Windows GUI that combines interactive terminal work and file transfer. The free-use statement is Bitvise’s published licensing claim; check its current terms before deploying it in a specific organization.

3. MobaXterm Personal Edition — best all-in-one choice for personal use

MobaXterm describes SSH sessions with an SFTP pane, making it convenient when you want to browse files alongside a remote terminal. Its download page describes the Personal Edition as free for personal use on Windows 10 and Windows 11. That qualifier matters: do not assume the free edition covers business use. Confirm the license that applies to your intended deployment.

4. PuTTY — best for a familiar, focused SSH window

PuTTY is a well-known free SSH and Telnet client with a focused session-window approach. It can suit readers who want a straightforward graphical connection rather than an all-in-one terminal environment. Institutional guidance from KIT notes PuTTY’s .ppk key format and reports that the version it discusses lacks ProxyJump. Because that guidance is dated, treat those details as version-specific and check the current release documentation before relying on them.

5. Tabby — consider if you want a modern terminal with SSH management

Tabby’s official site describes a terminal application with an integrated SSH connection manager, as well as X11 and port forwarding. Those features may appeal if you want remote sessions and forwarding controls in one terminal-oriented app. The available product information is relatively stale, however; confirm current Windows 11 support, release status, and license terms before making it your main client.

6. Xshell — feature-rich sessions, with a restricted free license

Xshell’s feature descriptions include SSH and SFTP, tabs, session management, forwarding, and key authentication. Its free license is limited to home and school use; business users need a commercial license. It may fit users who value organized sessions and tunneling, but check the current license before using it outside the permitted contexts.

7. Termius — candidate for cross-platform workflows

A secondary 2026 roundup describes Termius as a cross-platform SSH client with free and paid tiers. The information available here does not establish its current Windows 11 support, free-tier limits, pricing, or licensing from official documentation. Treat it as a candidate to investigate, not a confirmed free recommendation: check those details with the publisher before choosing it.

Check OpenSSH before installing another client

  1. Open Windows Terminal, PowerShell, or Command Prompt and run ssh.
  2. If Windows responds that the command is not recognized, open Windows Settings and check Optional Features for OpenSSH Client. Install it if it is not present.
  3. Open a new terminal and run ssh again. You can then connect using the usual SSH command format, for example ssh user@hostname, replacing the account and host with your actual details.
  4. If you need file transfer, use the included sftp or scp tools, or choose a GUI client with an integrated file browser.

Make the choice based on license as well as features

For an individual command-line workflow, Windows OpenSSH is the simplest baseline. For a GUI with SFTP and tunneling, Bitvise’s published terms make it the clearest broadly usable option in this list. MobaXterm Personal Edition and Xshell’s free license have narrower use contexts, so check those boundaries before installing them for work. For Tabby, Termius, and WindTerm, verify current support and licensing rather than treating a feature listing or roundup mention as confirmation.

SSH clients and their terms can change. The product information summarized here was researched on October 7, 2026; confirm current Windows compatibility, licensing, and release status with the publisher before adoption.
