To use less mobile data, turn on Data Saver, lower cellular streaming quality, and prevent downloads over cellular. To free device storage, clear Spotify’s cache or remove offline downloads. These controls solve different problems: audio quality and playback choices affect data use, while cache and downloads occupy local space.
First, separate mobile data from device storage
Spotify’s settings affect two different resources. Mobile data is consumed when the app streams music or video over a cellular connection. Device storage is used for cached media and content saved for offline playback. A setting that helps one does not necessarily help the other: clearing cache does not stop streaming, and Data Saver does not erase files already stored on your phone.
This distinction helps you choose the right fix. If your cellular plan is the concern, change streaming and download behavior. If your phone is nearly full, manage cache and downloads. If both are problems, adjust both groups of settings.

Which settings change each outcome?
| Setting or action | Main effect | Trade-off or limit |
|---|---|---|
| Data Saver | Reduces data use by showing fewer images and lowering audio quality. | Audio quality is lower; it does not clear existing cache or downloads. |
| Lower cellular streaming quality | Uses less data for streamed music than a higher-quality setting. | Sound quality is reduced. The listed bitrates are setting specifications, not a precise usage guarantee. |
| Wi-Fi downloads and offline playback | Avoids streaming downloaded content over cellular. | Downloaded music uses device storage; Spotify’s help guidance says music downloads for offline listening require Premium. |
| Clear cache | Reclaims space used by cached media. | Spotify may build the cache again as you listen. |
| Remove downloads | Reclaims space used by offline content. | Removed content is not available offline until downloaded again. |
| Android external SD storage | Moves Spotify download storage off the phone’s internal memory. | Requires an available, accessible external SD card and a compatible Android device. |
| Turn off Autoplay | Stops additional playback after the selected content ends. | Does not change the quality or size of tracks already downloaded. |
| Turn off Canvas | Disables looping visuals on the Now Playing screen. | Spotify describes Canvas as using very little data, so this is a preference rather than a major data-saving measure. |
How to reduce Spotify’s mobile data use
1. Turn on Data Saver
- Tap your profile picture.
- Open Settings and privacy.
- Go to Data-saving and offline.
- Turn on Data saver.
Spotify Support says Data Saver reduces app data use by showing fewer images and lowering audio quality. It is the most direct first change if you want Spotify to use less data across ordinary app use. It is not a storage-cleanup control, so it will not delete downloads or existing cache.

- EASY CONTENT MANAGEMENT. Easily back up, organize, and transfer your photos and videos with the SANDISK Memory Zone desktop or Android mobile app[5].
2. Lower the cellular streaming quality
In Settings and privacy, open Media Quality and lower the streaming quality for cellular data. Where the app offers separate Wi-Fi and cellular choices, lower the cellular option while leaving Wi-Fi quality higher if you prefer better sound at home or work. Higher streaming quality uses more data; the lower setting trades some audio detail for reduced data consumption.
Spotify lists approximate music bitrates of Low: 24 kbit/s, Normal: 96 kbit/s, and High: 160 kbit/s. Very high: 320 kbit/s is listed for Premium. Spotify also describes lossless as up to 24-bit/44.1 kHz FLAC. These are Spotify’s descriptions of audio-quality settings, not independent measurements or promises of a particular monthly bill or per-hour data amount. Actual use depends on the selected quality and listening behavior.
Download quality is a separate choice from streaming quality. Lowering cellular streaming quality does not change the quality of files already downloaded. Conversely, lowering download quality reduces the storage used by future downloads, not the data needed for a stream that is currently playing.

3. Keep downloads off cellular
Spotify’s documented data-saving guidance recommends turning Downloads over cellular off so downloads happen over Wi-Fi. Look for this control under Settings and privacy → Data-saving and offline; labels and availability can vary by app version or device. If a download is large, waiting for a trusted Wi-Fi connection avoids using cellular data to fetch it.
For eligible Premium accounts, download selected music while connected to Wi-Fi, then play the downloaded content offline when you are away from Wi-Fi. This replaces repeated streaming for that saved content with local playback, but the files take up device storage. Spotify’s help guidance identifies Premium as necessary for downloading music for offline listening; availability and controls can differ by plan, region, device, or content type.
4. Use audio-only options for video podcasts
Video can consume more data than audio playback. For video podcasts, check Downloads and streaming for Audio-only streaming and audio-only download controls, if those options appear in your version of Spotify. Choosing audio-only lets you listen without streaming or saving the video component. This is a more relevant adjustment for video podcasts than changing Canvas.

5. Stop playback from continuing automatically
Turn off Autoplay if you want playback to end when the selected album, playlist, or queue is finished rather than continuing with suggested content. Spotify includes this among its data-reduction suggestions. It can prevent unwanted additional streaming when you leave playback running, but it does not shrink saved files or change the quality of content you have already downloaded.

Canvas can also be switched off on mobile and desktop if you do not want looping Now Playing visuals. Spotify says these short visuals use very little data and do not run in the background, so disabling them should not be treated as a major way to reduce data use.
How to free Spotify storage
Clear the cache on iPhone or Android
- Tap your profile picture.
- Open Settings and privacy.
- Choose Data-saving and offline.
- Open Storage, then tap Clear cache.
Spotify stores portions of music and podcasts in cache so playback can run without lag. Clearing that cache reclaims space, but it is not the same as deleting saved offline tracks. Spotify can create cache again as you play content, so treat clearing it as a way to reclaim currently occupied space rather than a permanent storage reduction.

Clear cache on desktop
In the Spotify desktop app, open Settings, find Storage, and select Clear cache. The setting is useful when the desktop app’s cached media is taking up space on the computer; it does not remove offline downloads you intend to keep.
Remove downloads you no longer need
If the device is still short on space after clearing cache, remove offline downloads you do not need. Downloads occupy device memory separately from cache, so a cache clear alone will not remove them. After deleting a download, the content will need to be downloaded again before it can be played offline.
Spotify recommends keeping at least 1 GB of free memory on the device for Spotify. This is Spotify’s recommendation, not a measured minimum app requirement. If you are close to that amount, review downloads and other device storage before saving more offline content.

Platform-specific storage options
Android: move downloads to an external SD card
If your Android device has an external SD card that is available and accessible, Spotify can use it as the downloads location. In the app, open Settings and privacy → Data-saving and offline → Storage, then choose the SD card as the storage location. Spotify notes that the transfer can take a few minutes and that the app restarts after the move. It suggests having at least 1 GB free on the SD card.
This changes where download storage is kept; it does not reduce the amount of cellular data used to download content, clear cache, or make the files smaller. If the card is unavailable or not accessible to Spotify, this option may not appear or may not work as expected. The exact availability depends on the device and its storage configuration.
iPhone: manage downloads on device storage
Spotify downloads on iPhone are encrypted on the device. iOS may remove unused stored data to make room for new downloads, but that may not free enough space. If storage remains tight, remove Spotify downloads you no longer want to keep offline. Clearing Spotify cache is another separate option available in the app’s Storage section.

- Cellular data is running low: enable Data Saver, lower cellular streaming quality, and disable downloads over cellular. If you listen to video podcasts, use audio-only playback where available.
- The phone is nearly full: clear cache, then remove unneeded downloads if necessary. On a compatible Android device, consider moving downloads to an external SD card.
- You want offline listening without large mobile downloads: download eligible music over Wi-Fi, with cellular downloads disabled, and keep only the content you need offline.
- You do not want Spotify to keep playing after a playlist or album: turn off Autoplay. This limits additional playback but is not a storage control.
- You are considering turning off Canvas: do so if you prefer a static screen, not because it is likely to make a substantial difference to data use.
What settings cannot tell you about savings
Spotify does not provide a guaranteed amount of data saved per hour or per month for these changes in the cited support guidance. The audio-quality bitrates describe settings, but they are not a complete calculator for an individual account’s usage. Listening time, streaming quality, downloaded versus streamed playback, and whether video is involved all matter. Use your phone’s cellular-data tracking to judge actual usage after changing settings, and compare periods with similar listening habits for a more useful comparison.
App paths and labels can change across Spotify versions, plans, regions, devices, and operating systems. The paths above reflect Spotify Support’s documented instructions; if a label differs, look in the equivalent data, media-quality, offline, or storage section of the app’s current settings.
