The right Sony Cinema Line camera depends on sensor format, shooting style, recording needs, and the cost of the complete setup—not on an official ranking. Sony’s US catalog lists the FX5, FX2, FX3, FX30, and FX6, but does not designate them as its top five. This guide compares them by practical fit, using Sony’s specifications and product descriptions rather than unsupported head-to-head performance claims.

At a glance: five Sony Cinema Line cameras

Camera Sensor format Best-fit starting point Notable details Sony US store price observed 2026-10-07
Sony FX5 Full frame Production teams seeking Sony’s newer feature set 5K fully stacked Exmor RS sensor, BIONZ XR2 with integrated AI processing, Open Gate; XLR handle included in the listed bundle $5,499.99, listed bundle
Sony FX2 Full frame Buyers considering a full-frame Cinema Line body and XLR-handle bundle Sony’s product page identifies the full-frame model and handle bundle; the available material does not establish a quantified performance advantage over other models $2,899.99, configuration should be checked
Sony FX3 Full frame Mobile or solo shooting Sony specifies 15+ stops of latitude in S-Log3; two media slots accept CFexpress Type A or SD cards, and the XLR handle has two XLR/TRS inputs $3,999.99, configuration should be checked
Sony FX30 APS-C / Super 35 Filmmakers who want the smaller sensor format and supported 4K 120p modes 23.3 × 15.5 mm APS-C-type sensor; 14+ stops of S-Log3 latitude; XLR handle provides two XLR/TRS inputs $2,099.99, configuration should be checked
Sony FX6 Full frame Production workflows looking for a compact body with a highly sensitive full-frame sensor Sony’s catalog offers body and lens-kit purchase options; compare the configuration you actually need $7,299.99 body; $8,699.99 lens kit

Prices are Sony US store listings observed on 2026-10-07, not guaranteed street prices or prices from another retailer. Bundles and availability may change. Sony’s official catalog is at Sony Cinema Line. The figures are a snapshot, not a ranking or value verdict.

How to choose among the five

Choose by sensor format and lens field of view

The FX30 is the APS-C/Super 35 option; the FX5, FX2, FX3, and FX6 are full frame. Sensor format affects how a lens frames a scene and the depth-of-field choices available at a given setup. Consider the lenses you already own, the field of view you need, and the look you want. The smaller sensor does not make the FX30 inherently inferior; it is a different production choice.

Choose by the way you shoot

Sony positions the FX3 for mobility and solo work. The FX6 is described as a compact body with a highly sensitive full-frame sensor, while the FX5’s listed features make it a notable option for buyers interested in its newer sensor, processing, and Open Gate recording. The FX2 is another full-frame option, but the available Sony material does not demonstrate that it outperforms the FX3 or FX5. Treat these as different tools, not a universal upgrade ladder.

Elebase USB to USB C Adapter for iPhone 18 Pro Max,USBC Car Charger Adapter
  • Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
  • Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
  • Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
  • Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
  • 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.

Choose by recording mode, not headline frame rate

A camera’s maximum frame rate is not necessarily available in every resolution, codec, or recording mode. Sony lists supported 4K 120p modes for the FX30; consult the camera’s current specification table for the exact codec and mode before building a workflow around that rate. Sony describes 5K (3:2) X-OCN at 120 fps and 4K at 240p for the FX5 as planned firmware capabilities for “August 2027 or later.” Those are future plans, not features to count on as available now.

Include media, audio, and lenses in the decision

Card requirements and audio setup can change the real cost and convenience of a camera system. Sony specifies that the FX3 has two slots accepting CFexpress Type A or SD media, and that its XLR handle provides two XLR/TRS inputs. For the FX5, Sony notes CFexpress Type A requirements for some X-OCN recording; its XLR handle is part of the selected listed bundle. The FX30’s XLR handle provides two XLR/TRS inputs. Check the precise bundle, recording mode, and accessory compatibility before buying, rather than assuming every body includes the same handle or accepts the same media.

What stands out about each model

Sony FX5: full-frame features with a future firmware caveat

Sony identifies the FX5 as a full-frame camera with a 5K fully stacked Exmor RS sensor, BIONZ XR2 processing with integrated AI, and Open Gate recording. These features make it the clearest choice in this group for readers specifically drawn to that combination. Keep the timeline for the planned high-frame-rate modes separate from the camera’s current capabilities: Sony says the 5K (3:2) X-OCN 120 fps and 4K 240p modes are planned for August 2027 or later. Sony also says the camera is not guaranteed to be 100% dust- and moisture-proof. For details, see Sony’s FX5 product page.

Sony FX2: a full-frame option whose exact bundle matters

Sony’s catalog includes the FX2, and its product page identifies a full-frame Cinema Line camera with an XLR handle bundle. The facts available here do not support claims that it beats another body on performance. Compare the actual package and Sony’s current recording specifications against your required modes and handling needs. See Sony’s FX2 product page.

  • What You Get: Anker USB-C Hub (7-in-1), welcome guide, 18-month warranty, and our friendly customer service.

Sony FX3: mobile full-frame shooting and flexible media slots

Sony positions the FX3 for mobility and solo shooting. Its specifications list more than 15 stops of latitude in S-Log3, two slots that accept CFexpress Type A or SD cards, and two XLR/TRS inputs on the XLR handle. Sony’s recording tables distinguish modes by frame rate and codec, so verify the combination you plan to use instead of assuming every codec reaches the highest listed rate. See Sony’s FX3 specifications and product page.

Sony FX30: APS-C/Super 35 and supported 4K 120p recording

The FX30’s APS-C-type sensor measures 23.3 × 15.5 mm. Sony lists supported 4K 120p modes and more than 14 stops of S-Log3 latitude; its XLR handle provides two XLR/TRS inputs. Evaluate the sensor format in relation to your lenses, desired field of view, depth of field, and workflow—not as a simple measure of quality. See Sony’s FX30 specifications.

Sony FX6: compare the body with the lens kit

Sony describes the FX6 as a compact body with a highly sensitive full-frame sensor. The US catalog offers it as a body and as a lens kit, with different listed prices; make sure you are comparing like with like when reviewing offers. The available sources do not establish controlled head-to-head results against the FX3 or FX5, so its fit should be judged by your production workflow and the exact configuration. See Sony’s FX6 product page.

A practical buying checklist

  • Sensor: Decide whether full frame or APS-C/Super 35 better matches your lenses, framing, and desired depth of field.
  • Recording: Find the exact resolution, frame rate, and codec combination you need in Sony’s specification page for the model.
  • Media: Confirm card type and capacity for your chosen modes, including any CFexpress Type A requirement.
  • Audio: Check whether the XLR handle is included in the bundle you intend to buy and whether its inputs suit your setup.
  • System cost: Add compatible lenses, media, and audio accessories to the body or kit price; do not treat the body price as the whole production budget.
  • Purchase configuration: Confirm body versus kit, current availability, and regional listing before checkout.

What Sony’s Cinema Line positioning does—and does not—tell you

Sony’s Cinema Line overview describes its look as “optimally designed to create luxurious film-like video expression, with color tones resembling those of film for skin textures and the like.” That is Sony’s product positioning, not an independent comparative test. Official specifications can establish listed features and recording modes, but they do not determine which camera will perform best for a particular crew, lens set, or production. For a decision between two bodies, compare the exact modes and configurations your work requires rather than relying on a general ranking.
