The right Sonos speaker depends on the job you need it to do. Choose Era 100 for compact everyday music with built-in voice control, Era 100 SL for the same compact category without voice control, Era 300 for Dolby Atmos spatial audio, Five for Sonos’s flagship hi-fi positioning, Roam 2, Sonos Play or Move 2 when you need battery-powered listening, and Ray, Beam or Arc Ultra for television sound. There is no single best model for every room because Sonos separates ordinary music speakers, portable speakers and TV soundbars into different product categories.
This guide uses Sonos’s own product positioning rather than independent listening tests. Prices and availability change; US prices shown below are catalog snapshots from Sonos pages accessed October 13, 2026.
Start with the listening job
Before comparing model names, decide what you will play and where. A speaker designed for a bookshelf and background music is not a substitute for a soundbar connected to a television, and a portable model has battery and weather-resistance priorities that a fixed-room speaker does not.
| Your main need | Best starting point | Why it fits |
|---|---|---|
| Everyday music in one room | Era 100 | Sonos positions it as a compact speaker with stereo sound, rich bass and built-in voice control. |
| Compact music without built-in voice control | Era 100 SL | It shares the compact stereo and rich-bass positioning but omits voice control. |
| Dolby Atmos music or movies | Era 300 | Sonos calls it a spatial-audio speaker built for Dolby Atmos. |
| High-end fixed-room music | Five | Sonos describes it as a flagship hi-fi speaker with deep bass and line-in. |
| Small portable listening | Roam 2 | Sonos lists it as ultra-portable, waterproof and designed for travel. |
| Longer portable listening | Sonos Play | Sonos lists up to 24 hours of battery life and a waterproof portable design. |
| Largest portable option | Move 2 | Sonos positions it as a flagship portable speaker for home and outdoors. |
| TV in a small room | Ray | Sonos positions this as a compact soundbar for smaller rooms and TVs. |
| Compact TV setup with more capability | Beam (Gen 2) or Beam Ultra | Both are positioned for TVs up to 65 inches; Beam Ultra adds Dolby Atmos positioning. |
| Large-room, immersive TV sound | Arc Ultra | Sonos positions it as an ultra-immersive soundbar for large rooms and TVs. |
Those are starting points, not claims that one model objectively sounds better than another. Sonos’s catalog descriptions explain intended use; they do not establish independent measurements or comparative listening results.

- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
For everyday room music: Era 100 or Era 100 SL
Choose Era 100 when voice control matters
Era 100 is the straightforward choice for a compact room speaker if you want built-in voice control. Sonos describes it as delivering compact stereo sound and rich bass with voice control. Put it in a bedroom, office, kitchen or other room where you want a self-contained music speaker and hands-free commands.
Choose Era 100 SL when you do not want built-in microphones
Era 100 SL is the compact alternative without built-in voice control. Sonos gives both models the same broad compact-stereo and rich-bass positioning, so the clearest documented distinction is the missing voice feature. Select the SL when you prefer to control playback from the app or another device and do not need voice control in that room.
Do not assume “SL” means a different speaker category or automatically better value: compare the current price, bundles and availability on the model pages when you buy. Sonos can change catalog offers.

Era 300 is the model to consider when spatial audio is the reason you are shopping. Sonos labels it a “Spatial audio speaker built for Dolby Atmos.” Its fact sheet specifies six drivers aimed left, right, forward and upward. That driver layout is intended to direct sound around the listening position for compatible Dolby Atmos music and movies.
Era 300 can also be used as a surround speaker with Arc or Beam (Gen 2), according to Sonos’s fact sheet. That makes it a possible rear-channel choice for a compatible home-theater system, rather than only a standalone music speaker.

Dolby Atmos support does not mean every song or video becomes spatial audio. The source and service must provide compatible content, and the result depends on the system configuration and room. Treat Sonos’s Atmos description as the model’s intended capability, not a promise that every track will use all six drivers.
For a flagship fixed-room music speaker: Five
Sonos describes Five as its flagship hi-fi speaker with deep bass and line-in. That positioning suits a dedicated listening room or a buyer who wants a larger, fixed speaker rather than a compact model or a battery-powered unit.
Line-in is useful if you plan to connect an external source. Confirm the current connection method and required accessories before purchase, especially if your source is a turntable or another device with a particular output. The available product information does not provide independent measurements, room-size limits or a universal claim that Five will outperform every other Sonos model.
Portable Sonos speakers: Roam 2, Sonos Play and Move 2
Sonos’s portable lineup is designed to work on home Wi-Fi and over Bluetooth when you take a speaker away from your network. Battery figures are manufacturer estimates and will vary with volume, content, Bluetooth use and other conditions.
| Model | Sonos positioning | Listed battery life | US catalog price snapshot | Best fit |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Roam 2 | Ultra-portable, waterproof and built for travel | Up to 10 hours | $179 | Travel, small spaces and the lightest portable option |
| Sonos Play | Portable and waterproof for home and beyond | Up to 24 hours | $299 | Longer sessions away from a charger |
| Move 2 | Flagship portable speaker for home and outdoors | Up to 24 hours | $499 | A larger portable setup for moving around the house or using outdoors |
The prices and battery figures in this table are the values Sonos listed on its portable pages accessed October 13, 2026. They are not guaranteed current prices or runtimes. Check the model page for the latest offer and regional availability.

When Roam 2 makes sense
Choose Roam 2 if portability is the priority. Its “ultra-portable” positioning and 10-hour listed battery target trips, balconies, kitchens and other places where a smaller speaker is easier to carry.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesWhen Sonos Play makes sense
Sonos currently presents Sonos Play as a portable, waterproof model with up to 24 hours of listed battery life. It is the middle option on the published price and battery table, suitable when you want longer sessions than Roam 2 without moving to the flagship Move 2 category.
When Move 2 makes sense
Move 2 is the portable choice for buyers who want Sonos’s flagship portable positioning for home and outdoor use. Its listed 24-hour battery life matches Sonos Play’s figure, while its catalog price is higher; the decision therefore rests on the size and feature set you need, not battery duration alone.
For TV sound: Ray, Beam (Gen 2), Beam Ultra or Arc Ultra
Soundbars are a separate buying decision from room music speakers. They are designed around television dialogue, movies and TV-system expansion. Choose according to room size, TV size, desired features and budget.
| Soundbar | Sonos positioning | TV or room guidance | US catalog price snapshot |
|---|---|---|---|
| Ray | Compact soundbar for smaller rooms and TVs | Best starting point for a small, straightforward TV setup | $219 |
| Beam (Gen 2) | Powerful compact soundbar | Positioned for TVs up to 65 inches | $499 |
| Beam Ultra | Compact Dolby Atmos soundbar | Positioned for TVs up to 65 inches when Atmos is a priority | $699 |
| Arc Ultra | Ultra-immersive soundbar | Positioned for large rooms and TVs | $1,099 |

Ray for a smaller room
Ray is the practical entry point when you want a compact soundbar for a smaller room or TV. It is not the model to choose solely because it is less expensive if your priority is Dolby Atmos or a larger-room presentation; Sonos positions Beam Ultra and Arc Ultra for those different requirements.
Beam (Gen 2) for a compact but more capable TV system
Beam (Gen 2) is positioned as a powerful compact soundbar for TVs up to 65 inches. It is a sensible middle-ground starting point when you want more capability than the compact Ray category while keeping the system relatively small.
Beam Ultra when Dolby Atmos is central
Beam Ultra combines the compact Beam format with Sonos’s Dolby Atmos positioning and is also listed for TVs up to 65 inches. Choose it when immersive TV audio matters but your room and screen do not call for the larger Arc Ultra category.
Arc Ultra for a large room
Arc Ultra is Sonos’s ultra-immersive soundbar positioning for large rooms and TVs. Its higher catalog price reflects its place at the top of this soundbar lineup, but the product information does not provide independent room measurements or a guarantee that it is the right choice for every large television.

Sonos lists system combinations that add a Sub product and/or Era speakers as surrounds to a soundbar. Add those components only when you have a clear reason: a subwoofer for more low-frequency impact, rear speakers for a surround layout, or both for a larger home-theater system.
Best Value
- 5-in-1 Connectivity: Equipped with a 4K HDMI port, a 5 Gbps USB-C data port, two 5 Gbps USB-A ports, and a USB C 100W PD-IN port. Note: The USB C 100W PD-IN port supports only charging and does not support data transfer devices such as headphones or speakers.
- Powerful Pass-Through Charging: Supports up to 85W pass-through charging so you can power up your laptop while you use the hub. Note: Pass-through charging requires a charger (not included). Note: To achieve full power for iPad, we recommend using a 45W wall charger.
- Transfer Files in Seconds: Move files to and from your laptop at speeds of up to 5 Gbps via the USB-C and USB-A data ports. Note: The USB C 5Gbps Data port does not support video output.
- HD Display: Connect to the HDMI port to stream or mirror content to an external monitor in resolutions of up to 4K@30Hz. Note: The USB-C ports do not support video output.
- What You Get: Anker 332 USB-C Hub (5-in-1), welcome guide, our worry-free 18-month warranty, and friendly customer service.
Era 300 is specifically documented as compatible as a surround speaker with Arc or Beam (Gen 2). Do not generalize that pairing statement to every soundbar or every Era model without checking current compatibility information.
Expansion also affects placement, power outlets, room symmetry and budget. A compact soundbar may be the better choice if you cannot position rear speakers correctly; buying extra hardware does not automatically create a better result in an unsuitable room.
Check voice control and source connections
Voice control
Era 100 includes built-in voice control according to Sonos, while Era 100 SL does not. If voice control is essential, that difference should decide between the two compact models. If you do not want a voice-enabled speaker, the SL version avoids paying for a feature you will not use, subject to the current price difference.
Recommended Free Tools
Wi-Fi, Bluetooth and line-in
Sonos’s portable models support Wi-Fi at home and Bluetooth on the go. For Era 300, Sonos lists Wi-Fi and Bluetooth support and describes connecting an external audio device, such as a turntable, through an auxiliary cable and the Sonos Line-In Adapter. Verify exact input and adapter requirements for any other model before ordering.
Quick Recap
A practical buying sequence
- Name the primary room and activity. Decide whether the speaker will mainly play music, accompany a TV, provide Dolby Atmos playback or travel outside.
- Choose the product family. Use Era or Five for fixed-room music, Roam 2/Sonos Play/Move 2 for portability, and Ray/Beam/Arc Ultra for television.
- Resolve the feature fork. For compact music, choose Era 100 or Era 100 SL based on voice control. For Atmos, move to Era 300 or Beam Ultra rather than assuming a standard model provides the same experience.
- Measure the practical setup. Check shelf or console space, power access, TV size, listening positions and whether rear speakers can be placed safely.
- Set the complete budget. Include any Sub, surround pair, mount or Line-In Adapter you genuinely need; do not treat optional accessories as mandatory.
- Verify the live listing. Recheck model name, price, bundle, regional availability and compatibility on Sonos’s current product page because catalog details can change.
Common buying mistakes
- Choosing by price alone: a low-priced soundbar and a portable speaker solve different problems.
- Assuming Era 100 and Era 100 SL are identical: built-in voice control is the documented difference.
- Expecting every track to be Dolby Atmos: Era 300’s spatial-audio capability depends on compatible content and system setup.
- Treating battery ratings as guarantees: the listed hours are manufacturer estimates under conditions that may not match your use.
- Buying surrounds without a placement plan: rear speakers require suitable positions and power.
- Using an old price as a promise: the figures here are dated US catalog snapshots from October 13, 2026.
- Assuming “flagship” is an independent test result: Five and Move 2 are described that way by Sonos; the label is manufacturer positioning.
