For the Smeg MGF01 MultiGrill, you usually do not need to buy extra plates. The appliance comes with one ridged grill plate, one smooth griddle plate and two waffle plates, plus a waffle-batter measuring cup and double-ended spatula. The optional MGGP01 flat-and-griddle set is mainly for replacement, a spare set, additional flat-food capacity or frequent cooking for several people.
What is included with the MGF01
Smeg lists four removable, interchangeable cooking plates in the MGF01 package. Their aluminium construction has a non-stick ceramic coating; Smeg describes the plates as PFAS-free in the product description and dishwasher-safe. Because the waffle surface requires a matched pair, the two waffle plates are supplied together rather than as one multipurpose plate.

This set covers the appliance’s advertised panini, burger and waffle presets without an accessory purchase. The plate count is therefore not an indication that the MGF01 is missing a basic cooking surface; the additional set serves a different purpose.

Grill plate
The ridges create the contact-grilling surface. Use it when you want food pressed against raised lines, such as a panini, burger or pieces of meat and vegetables. It is the appropriate choice for the MGF01’s contact-grilling and searing work. Smeg states that its Sear function heats the plate above 250°C for 30 seconds; that is a specified operating feature, not a claim that every food will cook in a fixed time.

Smooth griddle plate
The smooth plate keeps food in broad, even contact with the cooking surface. It is the more practical choice for eggs, pancakes and vegetables that could settle into the grooves of a ridged plate. It also provides a flat area when you do not want grill marks or when a loose ingredient needs stable support.
Waffle plates
Waffles require both patterned plates to close around the batter and form the waffle shape. They are not interchangeable with the grill or griddle plate for that job. Install the pair when selecting the waffle preset and use the supplied dosing cup to measure batter consistently.
How the plates fit the MGF01 cooking modes
Smeg documents three cooking modes: contact, oven and BBQ. It also lists presets for panini, waffles and burgers. The removable, interchangeable design lets you select the surface for the food rather than buying a separate appliance for each preset.

- Contact mode: close the plates around food such as a panini or burger. The ridged grill plate is the natural match when you want a seared or marked surface.
- Oven mode: use the plate arrangement appropriate to the food while allowing the appliance to work with the top opened or positioned as directed by the model instructions. Check the regional manual for the exact hinge and temperature procedure.
- BBQ mode: choose the flat or ridged surface according to whether you want broad contact or grill lines. The manual for your regional model should be the authority for opening and positioning the unit.
The modes do not create additional plate types. They change how the MGF01 operates with the plates you already have.
Do you need the optional MGGP01 set?
MGGP01 is Smeg’s named “Flat and griddle plate set for the SMEG MultiGrill.” Smeg Australia explicitly marks it “Compatible With MGF01.” It is the relevant exact-model accessory when you want another flat-and-griddle combination, not a prerequisite for normal use of a new MGF01.

A practical decision process before you buy
- List the foods you actually cook. If your routine is mainly panini, burgers and waffles, the package already supplies the necessary surfaces. Add eggs, pancakes, vegetables and other flat foods to the list if they are frequent rather than occasional.
- Decide whether one set can keep up. A second set has value when you need to start another batch while the first set is cooling, being washed or still in use. If you cook one small batch and clean immediately, the benefit is limited.
- Separate replacement from expansion. Replace a damaged plate only with a part identified for the MGF01. Buy MGGP01 for a spare or extra flat cooking capacity, not because the original box lacks a griddle.
- Confirm the model code. Read the rating label and packaging, then compare the complete MGF01 designation with the accessory listing. Do not rely solely on a similar-looking MultiGrill name.
- Check local stock and delivered cost. The accessory’s usefulness depends on being available in your country at a sensible total price. A technically suitable set that is unavailable or disproportionately expensive may not solve a practical problem.
Compatibility: check the region, not just “MGF01”
The MGF01 name does not by itself prove that every regional appliance has identical electrical hardware. Smeg’s UK listing specifies 220–240 V and a UK/Singapore plug, while regional catalogue data show other plug and voltage configurations. Those differences matter when buying an appliance and when confirming parts for a particular market.
- Match the full model code and the country or market shown on the listing.
- Verify the local voltage and plug before importing an appliance.
- For an accessory, look for the explicit MGF01 compatibility statement rather than assuming that any Smeg grill plate will fit.
- If the listing omits your region, ask Smeg or the authorised seller to confirm the part number before paying.
Electrical compatibility is separate from mechanical fit. A plate that appears identical may still be sold for a different model family, so retain the model label and purchase documentation.
Changing, cleaning and storing the plates
Change plates safely
- Stop cooking and allow the plates to cool before removing them.
- Release each plate using the MGF01’s plate-removal mechanism; do not force a plate that is still locked or hot.
- Install the replacement surface evenly and confirm that it is seated before closing the appliance.
- For waffles, fit the matched pair so the patterned cavities align when the lid closes.
The exact latch and hinge sequence can vary by regional documentation. Smeg’s support workflow retrieves the manual by entering the product code; use that manual for the precise removal and installation instructions for your unit.

Clean without damaging the coating
Smeg describes the plates as removable and dishwasher-safe. Let them cool first, then follow the regional manual’s cleaning guidance and the dishwasher manufacturer’s limits. Use the supplied double-ended spatula to lift residue rather than attacking the ceramic non-stick surface with a sharp metal edge or abrasive pad. Dry the plates fully before storing or reinstalling them.
Keeping a spare set has a practical cleaning advantage: one set can remain in use while the other is being washed and dried. That convenience, rather than a new cooking function, is the main reason an additional set can be worthwhile.

Buying MGGP01 because you think the MGF01 has no flat plate
The original package already includes a smooth griddle. MGGP01 adds another flat-and-griddle set; it does not unlock a missing basic mode.

Ordering a single waffle plate
The waffle function needs a matched pair. A lone plate cannot form the two-sided pattern, so confirm that any replacement listing supplies the required pair or that Smeg identifies the part as an individual replacement for a specific reason.
Assuming “dishwasher-safe” means “clean while hot”
Dishwasher compatibility does not remove the need to cool and handle the plates safely. Follow the manual and use the spatula for residue before loading them.
Importing a regional MGF01 without checking voltage
A plug adapter does not change appliance voltage. Confirm the rating for your country before purchase; the UK specification is 220–240 V with a UK/Singapore plug, while other markets can differ.

Treating manufacturer specifications as independent testing
The plate materials, PFAS-free description, dishwasher claim, cooking modes and Sear specification are Smeg’s published claims. No independent durability study or comparative performance test establishes how the coatings will perform over a particular lifetime, so handle them according to the manual and avoid assuming a guaranteed lifespan.

- The total delivered price and return terms make sense for a spare rather than an essential component.
If any of these details are missing, pause the order and obtain confirmation from Smeg support or the seller using your product code. That check is more reliable than matching photographs.
