The biggest battery saving is to make cellular the fallback, not the default. Keep the watch within Bluetooth range of its paired phone when practical, prefer Wi‑Fi when you are away from the phone, and set mobile connectivity to Automatic or Off when standalone service is unnecessary. Low Power or Battery Saver modes can extend runtime further, but they may delay notifications, stop background work, or disable radios. Strong signal, less streaming, shorter screen-on time and reduced background refresh all help.
The exact controls differ by Apple Watch, Pixel Watch, Galaxy Watch and other Wear OS models. Use the section for your platform, then verify that calls, messages, health features and location services still work as you expect.
Why cellular data uses more battery
A cellular watch has to maintain a connection with a carrier network, periodically search for a better cell and transmit at higher power when reception is poor. That work is in addition to the display, sensors, GPS, apps and notifications that any smartwatch already runs. A watch connected to its paired phone over Bluetooth generally uses less power; when the phone is unavailable, Wi‑Fi is usually the next less-demanding option. Apple states, “Wi-Fi uses less battery power than mobile networks, so use Wi-Fi when you can.” Apple Support likewise recommends a strong Wi‑Fi or cellular signal and Airplane Mode in places where coverage is weak or absent.
There is no universal number of hours gained by one switch. Battery capacity, model, signal quality, LTE plan, screen settings, GPS use, music streaming and temperature all change the result. Treat the controls below as ways to reduce radio and background work, not as guaranteed runtime percentages.

Choose the least power-intensive connection that meets your need

Settings that help on any cellular smartwatch
Keep the watch near its paired phone
When you are working, commuting or exercising with the phone nearby, leave cellular enabled but let Bluetooth carry the connection. This preserves normal phone-based features without asking the watch to maintain its own carrier link. If the phone is in Airplane Mode, powered off or out of Bluetooth range, the watch may fall back to Wi‑Fi or cellular.
Use Wi‑Fi when you leave the phone behind
Connect the watch to a known Wi‑Fi network before leaving the phone. Wi‑Fi is generally less demanding than mobile data, although a weak or constantly changing Wi‑Fi signal can waste power while the watch searches. If a network is unusable, forgetting it may prevent repeated connection attempts.
Set cellular to Automatic or Off when appropriate
Automatic is the best compromise for most people who occasionally need standalone service: the watch uses mobile data only when Bluetooth and Wi‑Fi are unavailable. Off is the strongest saving when you know you will not need calls, messages or data without the phone. Turn it back on before a phone-free run, hike or emergency-contact situation.
Use Low Power or Battery Saver for a defined period
Enable a power mode during travel, overnight use or the final part of a long workout rather than leaving it on permanently without checking its effects. Depending on the platform, it can turn off Always-on Display, reduce background activity, stop vibration or location, delay notifications, and limit or disable radios. Emergency alerts and time-sensitive notifications may not arrive promptly in an aggressive power mode.

Reduce screen, location and streaming work
- Shorten the screen timeout and disable Always-on Display if you can accept a tap-to-wake screen.
- Stop cellular music or podcast streaming; downloaded audio uses less radio time than a live stream.
- Use a power-efficient location-accuracy option when your watch offers one, especially for routine location features.
- Remove unnecessary complications, tiles and apps that refresh frequently.
- Use Airplane Mode in a basement, remote valley or other place with no usable Wi‑Fi or cellular signal. Searching continuously can consume more power than leaving the radio off.
Apple Watch: connection and Low Power controls
Prefer Bluetooth, then Wi‑Fi
Apple’s battery guidance says an Apple Watch is most efficient when it has a Bluetooth connection to its paired iPhone. Keep the devices close when battery life is a priority. When the iPhone is not nearby, join a known Wi‑Fi network where practical because Wi‑Fi uses less battery than mobile networks. A strong signal matters; a watch at the edge of coverage may spend extra energy transmitting and searching. The complete guidance is in Apple’s battery support article.
Turn on Low Power Mode when runtime matters more than immediacy
Open Control Center on the watch, tap the battery percentage, then choose Low Power Mode. Apple says this mode limits certain cellular and Wi‑Fi connections and turns cellular off until a feature needs it, such as streaming music or sending a message. It can delay notifications, and emergency alerts may not arrive, so do not treat it as a harmless performance setting.
Low Power Mode is not identical to simply switching cellular off: the watch can still activate a connection for an action that requires it. The exact behavior also depends on watchOS and the watch model. Apple documents the feature in Extend the battery life on Apple Watch.

Limit Background App Refresh
In the Watch app on the iPhone, open My Watch > General > Background App Refresh. Turn it off globally or leave it enabled only for apps that must update in the background. Apple notes that complications on the current watch face may still refresh, so remove high-update complications if you need the largest practical reduction in background activity.

Pixel Watch LTE: make Mobile automatic and control Battery Saver
Set Mobile to Automatic
On the watch, open Settings > Connectivity > Mobile > Mobile. Choose Automatic to use cellular only when Bluetooth or Wi‑Fi is unavailable. This preserves standalone capability without keeping the cellular radio active while the phone or a known Wi‑Fi network can provide the connection.
Use Mobile Off when standalone service is not needed
Choose Off in the same Mobile menu to completely turn off the cellular radio. Google warns that if the phone is offline and Mobile is Off, functions such as calls will not be available. Re-enable Mobile before leaving the phone behind if you need carrier-based calls, messages or data. Google’s current instructions are at Pixel Watch battery and charging help.
What Pixel Watch Battery Saver changes
Pixel Watch Battery Saver disables Always-on Display, limits background activity and may delay notifications. Google also recommends a faster screen timeout and enabling Improve location accuracy for more power-efficient location information. Streaming music can drain the battery faster, particularly over cellular, so download audio or avoid streaming when possible.

Samsung Galaxy Watch LTE or 3G
Disable Mobile networks when you do not need carrier service
On an LTE or 3G Galaxy Watch, open the watch’s connectivity settings and switch Mobile networks off. Samsung says this disconnects the watch from carrier network service. Menu labels can vary by model and software version, so look under Settings > Connections for Mobile networks if the wording differs.
With mobile networks off, Bluetooth and Wi‑Fi features can continue, but some apps and services require one of those connections. If calls, messages or an app stop working, first confirm that Bluetooth or Wi‑Fi is available before turning mobile service back on.
Use Power saving with its restrictions in mind
Samsung describes Power saving as restricting the home screen and watch functions; the exact restrictions differ between Galaxy Watch generations. Enable it from the watch’s quick panel or battery settings when you can accept reduced functionality, then check that health tracking, notifications and location still meet your needs. Other Wear OS watches
Google’s general Wear OS Battery Saver description is more aggressive than the Pixel Watch guidance. Depending on the manufacturer and mode, it may limit the watch to showing the time, stop notifications, disable vibration and location services, restrict background data, turn off Always-on Display, and disable Wi‑Fi, Bluetooth and mobile networks. The available switch and menu path are manufacturer-specific; use the watch maker’s instructions and read the confirmation screen before enabling it.

For a mild saving, start with Automatic mobile selection, a shorter screen timeout and reduced background refresh. Reserve the most restrictive Battery Saver profile for situations where preserving timekeeping is more important than connectivity. Practical setting plans
At home or work with your phone nearby
- Leave Mobile or Cellular on Automatic.
- Keep the phone and watch within Bluetooth range.
- Disable Always-on Display if you rarely need an always-visible screen.
- Allow background refresh only for essential apps and complications.
Going out without the phone
- Join a reliable Wi‑Fi network before leaving, if one is available.
- Keep Mobile on Automatic so cellular starts only when Wi‑Fi is unavailable.
- Download music instead of streaming over LTE.
- Shorten screen timeout and use a power-efficient location setting.
Trying to preserve the last part of the charge
- Turn on Low Power Mode or Battery Saver.
- Turn Mobile Off if you do not need standalone calls or data.
- Use Airplane Mode in a no-coverage area.
- Check that delayed notifications or disabled health and location features are acceptable.
How to tell whether a setting helped
Change one setting at a time and compare similar days: the same watch face, workout duration, screen behavior, signal area and streaming pattern. Check the battery graph after several hours rather than judging from a single percentage drop. A sudden drain only in one building or route usually points to weak coverage or repeated network searching; moving to a stronger signal, using Wi‑Fi or enabling Airplane Mode there is more effective than repeatedly restarting the watch.
If calls or notifications disappear after switching Mobile Off or a power mode on, restore the required radio first. If battery use remains abnormal with strong coverage and minimal use, update the watch software, remove a recently installed or frequently refreshing app, and test again with background refresh reduced. Battery replacement is a separate hardware issue and is not solved by a cellular setting.
