The right smart window air conditioner depends first on your room and window, then on which app or voice controls you want. For an 8,000-BTU option with a window-opening U-shaped design, consider the Midea MAW08U1QWT; for a conventional window unit with LG ThinQ, consider the LG LW8022IVSM. The 12,000-BTU GE Profile PWDV12WWF is a larger-room candidate. Tom’s Guide also names Windmill as a small-room pick, but confirm the exact model and features before buying.

How to choose a smart window AC

Start with cooling capacity and the manufacturer’s room-size guidance, then check whether the unit fits your window and whether its smart features work with your home. A room-size figure is a starting point, not a guarantee: room layout and conditions can affect what capacity is appropriate.

  • Room and capacity: Match the model’s BTU rating and stated coverage to your room, and verify dimensions and installation requirements before ordering.
  • Window operation: A conventional unit may occupy the opening differently from a U-shaped design. Check the exact model’s installation instructions and your window measurements.
  • Controls: Confirm the app and voice-assistant support for the exact SKU. Brand families can include different models and generations.
  • Noise and efficiency: Treat manufacturer sound and efficiency claims as model-specific. Do not rank noise figures unless they use comparable test conditions, or compare efficiency percentages without the same metric and baseline.

Smart window AC models to consider

This shortlist combines manufacturer specifications with a named editorial guide’s recommendations. It is not an independent hands-on ranking: Tom’s Guide’s picks and testing are its own, and the manufacturer figures below are product-page claims.

What stands out about each option

Midea U: choose it for the window-opening design

The MAW08U1QWT combines 8,000 BTU of cooling with manufacturer guidance for rooms up to 350 square feet. Its U-shaped design is intended to let the window open and close, and Midea says the bracket and adjustable panels are included. The stated 32 dBA minimum is a manufacturer claim; the page does not establish conditions that make it directly comparable with LG’s sleep-mode figure. Midea also claims up to 45% greater energy efficiency, but the captured product information does not provide a comparison basis, so treat that as marketing rather than a verified head-to-head result. The page lists a three-year warranty.

Tom’s Guide named a Midea U model its overall pick in its June 25, 2026 guide. Confirm that its reviewed generation matches the MAW08U1QWT you are considering: Midea sells similarly named U-shaped models, and smart-home compatibility can differ by generation.

LG Dual Inverter: choose it for ThinQ and energy monitoring

The LW8022IVSM is an 8,000-BTU model rated by LG for rooms up to 350 square feet. Through ThinQ, LG says users can switch the unit on or off, change settings, and monitor energy use. The listed features also include four-way air direction, sleep mode, auto restart, and a 24-hour timer. LG’s 44 dB figure applies to sleep mode; it is not a stated maximum or an across-mode reading.

LG reports a 40% CEER difference versus a specified Department of Energy minimum requirement for this model, with the comparison dated May 2024. That is a manufacturer comparison using a particular baseline, not a direct efficiency comparison with the Midea or GE models. Tom’s Guide names the LG Dual Inverter its large-room pick, but use the exact model’s own capacity and room guidance rather than applying that label to the entire product line.

GE Profile: consider it for a larger room or SmartHQ setup

GE Appliances lists the PWDV12WWF as a 12,000-BTU ENERGY STAR inverter window AC for rooms up to 550 square feet, with SmartHQ control. That makes it the largest-capacity candidate in this shortlist by the stated specifications. Check the exact unit’s dimensions, window requirements, and current availability before choosing it; the captured product information does not establish a current price or stock status.

Windmill: a small-room pick from Tom’s Guide

Tom’s Guide’s June 25, 2026 guide names Windmill its small-room smart AC pick and reports 6,000- and 8,300-BTU options, Alexa and Google Assistant support, and app scheduling. Its reviewer reports testing a 6,000-BTU unit in a 250-square-foot room. Those are editorially reported details, not manufacturer specifications verified here. Confirm the exact SKU, current features, and compatibility before purchasing.

Check compatibility and window fit before buying

Verify smart-home support by exact model

The manufacturer pages identify Midea SmartHome and LG ThinQ controls; GE lists SmartHQ. The available coverage is inconsistent about Matter for Midea U: Tom’s Guide reports Matter support for its Midea U model, while CoolVerdict’s feature matrix does not advertise Matter for the options it compares. The sources may refer to different generations. Do not assume that a feature belongs to every model in a product family; check current setup documentation for the exact SKU. The same caution applies to Apple HomeKit, which the feature matrix does not advertise for its compared options.

Measure the opening and read the installation instructions

Confirm that the window type and opening accommodate the model and its mounting hardware. Midea specifically lists a quick-snap bracket and adjustable panels with the MAW08U1QWT; do not assume another unit uses the same hardware or installation method. Check whether the window can open as you want after installation, especially if that matters for ventilation or access.

Compare sound and efficiency claims on equal terms

Midea’s 32 dBA minimum and LG’s 44 dB in sleep mode are not established on shared test conditions, so they do not support a direct noise ranking. Likewise, Midea’s “up to 45%” energy-efficiency claim lacks a stated comparison basis in the captured product information. LG’s reported CEER difference has a named DOE minimum baseline and a May 2024 date. Neither figure, on its own, establishes which unit will use less electricity in your home.

Bottom line

For an 8,000-BTU model designed to preserve the ability to open and close the window, start with the Midea MAW08U1QWT. For ThinQ control and energy monitoring in a conventional window-unit form, consider the LG LW8022IVSM. For a larger capacity with SmartHQ, check the GE Profile PWDV12WWF. Windmill is a small-room option named by Tom’s Guide, but verify the exact product and specifications. In every case, make the final choice against your measurements, room needs, and exact smart-home setup.
