Roku, VIZIO, LG, Amazon Fire TV, and some Sony BRAVIA televisions provide documented controls for limiting automatic viewing-data collection. Independent testing has also identified related controls on Samsung, TCL, and Hisense sets. The feature may be called automatic content recognition (ACR), Viewing Data, Viewing Information Services, Interactive Service, Enhanced Viewing Service, or Samba Interactive TV.
These controls limit a particular category of telemetry; they are not a universal “stop tracking” switch. App-use records, diagnostics, advertising identifiers, account information, voice data, and data needed to operate online services can remain active. Menu names and locations depend on the exact model, operating system, firmware, country, and whether the television is using an antenna or external devices.
What viewing-data collection means on a smart TV
Most viewing-data controls govern ACR. ACR attempts to identify what is playing by analyzing content or signals on the television. Depending on the platform, the sources can include over-the-air channels, built-in streaming apps, HDMI-connected players, game consoles, and other external devices. Roku says its Smart TV Experience can collect what you watch, when you watch it, and for how long across antenna and connected inputs. VIZIO describes Viewing Data as information about programming, advertisements, games, HDMI devices, and third-party apps.

The resulting information may be used for audience measurement, recommendations, advertising, service operation, or product improvement. It is different from every other form of smart-TV data processing. A TV can stop sending ACR events while still recording app usage, crash reports, network diagnostics, voice commands, advertising preferences, account activity, or information needed to deliver a requested service.

No reliable cross-brand statistic establishes how many viewing events are collected or how many owners opt out. The available evidence is device-specific testing rather than a single industry-wide rate.

Roku: disable Smart TV Experience
Roku’s disclosure says enabling Smart TV Experience during setup, or selecting “Use info from TV inputs,” allows ACR collection about what you watch and when you watch it. On a Roku TV, open Settings > Privacy > Smart TV Experience and turn the feature off. If you are setting up the television for the first time, decline the Smart TV Experience choice instead of selecting the input-information option.
This setting targets viewing information from the television’s inputs. It does not revoke every privacy permission associated with a Roku account, applications, advertising, or device operation.

VIZIO: turn off Viewing Data, not just a general privacy option
On current VIZIO OS and SmartCast models, use All Settings > Privacy & Legal > Viewing Data. Older software may place the same control at All Settings > Admin & Privacy > Viewing Data. Switch Viewing Data off and confirm the choice if prompted.

VIZIO distinguishes Viewing Data from Activity Data. Turning off Viewing Data limits the ACR-based category but does not limit Activity Data. VIZIO says the change does not reduce television performance or online-service access, and that historical Viewing Data logs are deleted from its database when the setting is disabled. That statement does not mean every other category of information is deleted.
LG webOS: manage optional agreements
LG treats ACR, voice recognition, and interest-based advertising as optional features whose agreements can be reviewed, managed, or withdrawn in the television’s settings. Because LG does not provide one menu route that applies to every webOS release, open the privacy, user agreements, or terms area and look for ACR or an optional-agreement list. Read each agreement rather than withdrawing a broad consent without checking what it covers.
In markets covered by LG’s statement, declining optional agreements still permits core smart-TV functions, including streaming apps, live television, HDMI devices, and software updates. A model sold in another country or running different software may present different choices.

- Device Usage Data: Amazon says turning this off stops processing for customized marketing and product improvement tied to that setting.
- Collect App Usage Data: This governs a separate app-activity category, so review it independently.
- Interest-based Ads: This controls advertising personalization rather than all advertising or all data collection.
- Over-the-air Viewing Data: This applies to Fire TV smart televisions receiving antenna content.
Do not treat Device Usage Data as a replacement for the other three controls. Amazon explicitly separates the categories and notes that processing can continue for functions and other services after a setting is turned off.
Sony BRAVIA: find Interactive TV Settings or Samba Interactive TV
Sony’s instructions depend on the BRAVIA type and model. In the system-preferences area, search for Interactive TV Settings or Samba Interactive TV. Read the disclosure before declining or withdrawing consent: Samba information can be used for operating the service, recommendations, and personalized advertising. If neither label appears, use the model-specific support page or the television’s settings search rather than assuming the feature is absent.
Samsung, TCL, and Hisense: use tested labels as search terms
Independent testing identified Samsung’s Viewing Information Services, TCL’s Interactive Service, and Hisense VIDAA’s Enhanced Viewing Service as ACR-related labels. Those names are useful starting points in each TV’s privacy or agreement menus. A universal, current official path was not established for every model, so confirm the result against the exact model and software version. A similarly named setting may govern recommendations or advertising without being the complete privacy control.
How to turn off ACR when the menu is hard to find
- Record the exact model and software version. The model code is usually on the rear label or in Settings > Support/About. Note the country selected during setup.
- Open the privacy and agreement sections. Search for ACR, viewing data, viewing information, interactive service, enhanced viewing, Samba, smart-TV experience, or input information.
- Read the scope statement. Check whether it mentions antenna, apps, HDMI devices, recommendations, advertising, or audience measurement.
- Disable the specific viewing control. Confirm any warning and leave unrelated permissions unchanged unless you also intend to review them.
- Recheck after updates or a reset. Firmware updates, factory resets, and a new region selection can restore setup agreements or rename the option.
- Review the remaining categories. If your goal is broader privacy, separately inspect app-usage collection, diagnostics, advertising personalization, voice recognition, account sharing, and location permissions.
Does disabling viewing data stop all tracking?
No. The most accurate description is “limits this viewing-data or ACR feature.” VIZIO’s explicit split between Viewing Data and Activity Data demonstrates why a single toggle is insufficient. Amazon’s four separate privacy choices show the same design: device usage, app usage, advertising, and antenna-viewing data are distinct. LG’s optional agreements likewise separate ACR from voice recognition and interest-based advertising.

Turning off ACR also does not necessarily erase historical records held by a service. VIZIO specifically says its Viewing Data switch deletes historical Viewing Data logs from its database; other brands’ cited documentation does not establish an equivalent deletion promise. If deletion matters, look for a separate account-data request or privacy-rights process from the manufacturer.

A peer-reviewed 2024 study that audited ACR network traffic on Samsung and LG televisions found ACR operating across different viewing modes, including external-display use. Under the study’s conditions, opting out stopped network traffic to ACR servers. The researchers also observed differences between UK and US behavior. These findings apply to the tested devices and observed traffic, not every model or every type of telemetry.
RTINGS’ testing of a Samsung S95F, Sony Bravia 8 II, and LG G5 reported that identified ACR-related traffic stopped or changed dramatically after consent was withdrawn or the relevant setting was disabled. The same testing found differences in how clearly setup presented the choice and whether opting out affected smart features. Treat those results as observations from the named models, not a guarantee for all televisions sold under the same brand.

The option is missing
Check the model number, region, and firmware first. Some controls appear only during initial setup, while others are grouped under agreements or privacy disclosures. A television using an external streaming device may expose fewer input-related options than a TV with its own smart platform.

The setting returned after a reset
Factory resets commonly repeat the privacy-consent flow. Revisit the setup choice and then inspect the full privacy menu after the home screen loads. Keep a record of the selected options if several televisions use the same account.
Streaming stopped after opting out
On supported LG markets, declining optional agreements is not supposed to block core streaming, live-TV, HDMI, or update functions. On other platforms, independent testing found feature trade-offs varied. Reopen the agreements screen to identify which consent was withdrawn; restore only the permission required for the feature you need, rather than re-enabling every data category.
You still see recommendations or targeted ads
Recommendations and advertising can use separate app-usage, account, or interest-based data. Review those controls independently. Seeing an ad or recommendation is not proof that ACR was re-enabled.

- Disable the platform’s ACR or viewing-data control.
- Turn off separate app-usage collection if you do not need personalized recommendations.
- Review interest-based advertising and reset or limit the advertising identifier where offered.
- Check voice-recognition permissions and microphone settings.
- Review account, diagnostics, location, and device-sharing permissions.
- After a firmware update or factory reset, verify the choices again.
The Bottom Line
Several major smart-TV platforms let you limit viewing-data collection, but each exposes a different control and scope. Start with the exact label on your model, disable ACR or its equivalent, and then review app, advertising, diagnostic, voice, and account settings separately.
