The most useful household setup is usually a combination, not one “best” method: a keypad for dependable everyday and guest entry, a phone or Bluetooth option for residents who carry one, and a documented mechanical or emergency-power fallback. Fingerprint, palm, voice, NFC and remote Wi-Fi unlocking can add convenience, but each introduces model-specific hardware, account, network or privacy requirements. Check the exact lock, software version and regional specification before assuming a feature is included.
What a household should get from a smart lock
A household lock has to serve people with different habits. One resident may prefer a phone, a child may need a code, a cleaner may need access for one afternoon, and everyone needs a way in when the internet or batteries fail. Evaluate an unlocking method against four questions:
- Can the people who use it operate it reliably?
- Can you issue, schedule and revoke access without sharing a permanent credential?
- Does it work when the phone, Wi-Fi or cloud service is unavailable?
- Is there a recovery procedure that someone can follow during a power or device failure?
Manufacturers implement these functions differently. Code limits, schedules, biometric enrollment, voice integrations, emergency charging and backup-key procedures can change between models, revisions and regions.
Keypad PINs and guest codes
A keypad is the most broadly useful electronic method for many homes because users do not need a phone, app account or internet connection at the door. A household can assign separate PINs to residents and issue a temporary or one-time code to a visitor, cleaner, dog walker or contractor. Revoking one person’s code does not require changing everyone else’s.

- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
Look for the exact management features rather than assuming every keypad is equivalent. Some locks support time-limited schedules, one-use codes or an expanded code capacity; others only provide a small set of permanent PINs. Certain models accept random digits before or after the real PIN so an observer has a harder time identifying the valid sequence from fingerprints or shoulder-surfing. Those protections and the number of users are product-specific.
Where a keypad works well
- Families who need independent credentials for several people.
- Guests who should enter without installing an app.
- Homes where phones are often left charging, lost or unavailable.
- Short-term access that must be revoked after a visit.
What to manage
Keep a written or securely stored list of who has each code and its expiry date. Delete codes when a guest, employee or former resident no longer needs access. Avoid birthdays, addresses and other easily guessed numbers, and do not post a shared household PIN where visitors can photograph it.
Fingerprint and palm recognition
Biometric entry can be faster than typing and removes the need to carry a phone or remember a PIN. It is most useful for enrolled residents who approach the door frequently and whose fingerprints or palms the sensor can read consistently.
The Tool Desk
Outbyte PC Repair FREERepair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Outbyte Driver Updater FREEScan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Enrollment is a practical consideration. Each user must register a credential, and some sensors perform better when the finger is placed in the same position used during enrollment. Wet, dirty, injured or worn fingertips can fail, so every enrolled person should have a second method such as a PIN, phone or key.
Biometric handling is also model-specific. TP-Link states that biometric data for its DL130 model is stored on the device rather than uploaded to the cloud; that is a vendor statement about that model, not a general property of all fingerprint locks. Read the manufacturer’s privacy description and deletion procedure before enrolling household members.
Who benefits most
- Residents who dislike carrying keys or taking out a phone.
- People who find long PINs difficult to remember.
- Households that want quick entry while carrying groceries.
Do not treat a fingerprint reader as an automatic security upgrade. The available evidence describes feature behavior and vendor handling, not an independent comparison showing that biometrics are safer than a well-managed code or key.

Phone apps and Bluetooth
A companion app can unlock the door, administer users and display lock status. Bluetooth is the local connection used by documented models for nearby phone access. It can continue to work when the lock has no Wi-Fi connection, provided the phone, app permissions, battery and Bluetooth support are all functioning.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
Local Bluetooth access and remote unlocking are different capabilities. A lock may let you open it beside the door over Bluetooth while offering no way to unlock it from another city. App log-in, operating-system permissions, account recovery and the phone’s own security become part of the access process. A dead phone battery or an uninstalled app can leave a resident relying on a PIN or key.
Good uses for app or Bluetooth access
- Residents who already carry a secured smartphone.
- Managing codes, biometric users and schedules from one interface.
- Checking status nearby without adding a separate hub.
Before buying, confirm whether the lock supports hands-free proximity unlocking or only an in-app button. Proximity features can create accidental-unlock concerns and may consume more phone or lock battery, while a deliberate in-app action is slower but easier to understand.
Wi-Fi remote unlocking
Remote access lets an authorized resident unlock the door for someone while away. It can help when a family member arrives early, a caregiver needs entry or a delivery requires supervision. The path normally depends on the lock’s network connection, the manufacturer’s service and the user account, so it is not the same as Bluetooth access at the door.
Remote unlocking adds failure points: an internet outage, an offline lock, a cloud-service interruption, an expired session or a compromised account can block or expose the function. Use it only when the household has a real need. If no one needs to manage the lock from outside the home, disabling remote management reduces the connected surface, consistent with Federal Trade Commission guidance for internet-connected devices.

- Does the lock require a separate bridge or hub, or does it contain Wi-Fi?
- Can remote unlocking be disabled while local keypad, key or Bluetooth entry remains available?
- Does the app require a confirmation PIN or another step before a remote unlock?
- What happens when the lock loses Wi-Fi but still has battery power?
Voice assistants
Voice control is convenient when your hands are occupied, but it should be enabled deliberately. A compatible assistant, account linking and sometimes a hub are required. Some integrations allow status checks but require a spoken PIN or confirmation before unlocking; others may not support unlocking at all in a particular region or software version.

Voice commands can be overheard or replayed. Use a confirmation PIN where the platform provides one, keep household assistant accounts protected, and do not assume that a lock’s “works with” logo means every voice function is available. Verify the exact commands and security controls in the lock and assistant documentation.
NFC cards and devices
NFC provides tap-style entry with a card, tag or compatible device when the lock explicitly supports it. It can suit a household that already uses NFC credentials and wants an alternative to typing. Compatibility is narrow: supported card types, enrollment limits and the required ecosystem differ by model. Confirm those details before purchasing cards or tags, and provide each user with a backup method in case an NFC credential is lost.
Mechanical keys and emergency power
A physical key is the simplest recovery method when electronics, batteries or accounts fail. Several smart-lock guides document a mechanical backup cylinder, but the keyway location and procedure vary. Keep at least one key somewhere accessible outside the locked home, such as with a trusted person; hiding it beside the door defeats the purpose.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteSome models also document an emergency power port or a built-in backup cell. These are not interchangeable with a mechanical key. An emergency port may require a USB power bank at the exterior terminals, while a backup cell may need a specific replacement procedure. Read the exact instructions, identify the port or cell location before an emergency and test the procedure while the lock is operating normally.
Methods compared by household need
| Method | Useful when | Dependency or trade-off |
|---|---|---|
| Keypad PIN or guest code | Family members, visitors, cleaners or other people need separate or temporary access | Codes must be managed and revoked; capacity and schedules differ by lock |
| Fingerprint or palm | Enrolled residents want quick entry without a code or phone | Requires compatible hardware and enrollment; not offered on every lock |
| Phone app or Bluetooth | Residents carry a phone and want nearby control or access management | Phone, app permissions and Bluetooth support matter; remote operation is separate |
| Wi-Fi remote unlock | A resident needs to let someone in while away | Depends on internet, the service and account security; disable it if unnecessary |
| Voice assistant | The household already uses a compatible assistant and wants hands-free control | May require a hub or PIN confirmation; enable intentionally |
| NFC card or device | The household wants a tap credential and owns a compatible lock | Supported cards and ecosystem are model-specific |
| Mechanical key or emergency power | Electronics or batteries may fail | Key storage and emergency-power procedure differ by model |
Choosing a combination for common household situations
Several residents and regular guests
Start with a keypad that supports individual codes. Add app or Bluetooth access for residents who prefer phones, and keep a mechanical key outside the home. If the lock offers schedules, give cleaners or contractors an expiry time instead of a permanent credential.
Children, older adults or phone-free users
A keypad is easier to explain than an app-dependent system. A fingerprint reader may help an enrolled user who struggles with PINs, but retain a code or key for sensor failures. Choose a model with clear keypad feedback and a low-friction fallback.

Caregivers or family members who live elsewhere
Remote Wi-Fi unlocking can be useful when someone must be admitted while no resident is home. Protect the account with a unique password and available two-factor authentication, and keep local entry methods working for internet outages.
Homes with unreliable connectivity
Prioritize keypad, biometric or Bluetooth functions documented to operate locally, plus a physical key. Do not pay for remote features that cannot be reached during the outages your household experiences.
Privacy-conscious households
Use local methods where possible and inspect what account, cloud and biometric data the manufacturer says it stores. A model’s claim that biometric data stays on-device applies only to that model and can change with a revision or software policy.
A practical setup and fallback plan
- List users and situations. Write down residents, expected guests, service workers and the rare situations in which someone must be admitted remotely.
- Choose a primary local method. For most households this is a keypad, with fingerprint or palm added only for users who want it and can enroll reliably.
- Create individual credentials. Assign separate PINs, biometric profiles or app accounts. Record expiry dates for temporary access and remove credentials promptly.
- Add a second everyday method. Enroll phone or Bluetooth access for residents who carry phones, but do not make it the only way in.
- Decide on remote and voice features. Enable Wi-Fi or voice control only when the household needs it. Configure any required confirmation PIN or hub.
- Test offline entry. With the door open, disconnect Wi-Fi and try the keypad, biometric reader, Bluetooth path and key. Confirm which functions are local and which stop working.
- Prepare for a dead battery. Locate the emergency port or backup-cell procedure, keep the required cable or battery available and test it without locking anyone out.
- Store the physical key securely. Keep it outside the home with a trusted person or in another controlled location, not hidden beside the door.
- Document recovery. Put the model number, battery type, app name and emergency steps somewhere household members can reach during an outage.
Security and account upkeep
The Federal Trade Commission advises: “If a device offers two-factor authentication (a password plus something else, like a code sent to your phone or a thumbprint scan), use it.” For a smart lock, two-factor authentication protects the management account; a fingerprint used directly at the lock is an unlocking credential, not automatically account two-factor authentication.
- Change default credentials during setup and use a unique, long password for the lock account.
- Enable available two-factor authentication and phone or platform security features.
- Install lock firmware and companion-app updates from the manufacturer.
- Review administrator and guest access after every move, renovation or change in household staff.
- Disable remote management that nobody uses.
- When ownership changes, remove former administrators and personal information, then factory-reset the connected lock before the new owner pairs it.
These are general connected-device practices, not evidence that any particular lock has passed an independent security audit. No neutral test establishes that remote unlocking, biometrics, keypads or keys are universally safer than one another.
What happens when something fails?
The internet is down
Remote Wi-Fi unlocking normally stops because it relies on an internet-connected path. A keypad, mechanical key and some Bluetooth functions may continue; verify the behavior for the exact model before relying on it.

The phone is lost or dead
Use an individual keypad code, biometric profile or physical key. Revoke the lost phone’s app session and review account devices as soon as possible.
The lock battery is empty
Use the documented exterior emergency-power connection if present, or the mechanical key. A replacement battery alone does not help if the lock cannot be opened to reach its battery compartment.
A fingerprint is not recognized
Try the enrolled finger again with the sensor clean and dry, then use the user’s PIN, phone or key. Re-enroll only after confirming that the sensor and battery are functioning.

Using a product specification as a reality check
The TP-Link Tapo DL110 is one documented example whose official product page lists fingerprint, app, Bluetooth, keypad, voice-assistant and physical backup-key entry. It illustrates how several methods can coexist; it does not show that every household needs all six or that every region receives the same functions. Confirm the current revision, regional availability, supported assistant, code and fingerprint limits, battery details and fallback procedure in the product documentation before buying.
Limits of the available evidence
Official TP-Link, Xiaomi and Aqara documentation describes features for particular products, while Federal Trade Commission material provides general connected-device security advice. Manufacturer battery-life estimates, code capacities and fingerprint limits are product claims, not household-wide statistics. The Xiaomi documentation notes that battery duration depends on conditions, so an estimate should not be treated as a universal promise. There is no independent, named statistic in the cited material comparing household unlocking methods.
For most homes, the sound decision is a layered one: keypad or another dependable local method for routine entry, phone or Bluetooth for convenience, optional biometrics or scheduled guest codes for the people who benefit from them, and a physical key or tested emergency-power procedure for failures. Remote Wi-Fi and voice control belong in the plan only when their added convenience justifies their network and account dependencies.
