Useful smart home gadgets for parents include connected lights, a speaker or display, a video doorbell, a smart thermostat, and either a smart lock or a smoke and carbon monoxide alarm. They are options to consider, not a universal must-have list: choose according to your home platform, children’s ages, layout, budget, installation limits, and privacy preferences.
How to choose smart home devices for your family
Start with the household need—such as easier bedtime lighting or knowing when someone is at the door—then check that a device works with your existing setup. Google’s compatible-device guide lists categories including lights, speakers and displays, doorbells, thermostats, locks, and smoke and carbon monoxide alarms. A category listing does not establish that every product is suitable for every child or home.
- Check platform and hub requirements. Confirm support for your smart home platform and the features you want. Matter support does not automatically mean a device can be set up or controlled remotely without a compatible hub; Google notes that hub requirements apply to setup, control, and automations while away from home.
- Check the home itself. Consider Wi-Fi coverage, existing wiring or doorbell equipment, HVAC compatibility, installation effort, and any additional hub or accessories. Google’s Nest and Google Home setup guide discusses network needs, while TechRadar’s 2026 device guide highlights installation, responsiveness, integration, and extra equipment as buying considerations.
- Check privacy and support. Review what data a device collects and shares, its microphone or camera controls, app permissions, password protections, and how long security updates are promised. The UK Information Commissioner’s Office provides consumer advice on smart-product privacy; its page notes the guidance is under review following changes to UK law.
- Plan for failure and child use. Think through what happens if Wi-Fi drops, an update goes wrong, or the device loses software support. The Australian Competition and Consumer Commission’s smart home device guide warns that these problems can affect operation and safety. Its advice is Australian consumer guidance, not a statement of law in every country.
Five smart home categories to consider
1. Smart bulbs or switches for routines
Connected lighting can make a scheduled or voice-activated morning or bedtime routine easier to manage. Check platform compatibility and whether the controls are appropriate for the children who may use them. In a 2021 qualitative study hosted by the Federal Trade Commission, parents described children turning on smart lights in their bedrooms; those examples illustrate possible use, not how common it is. 2. A smart speaker or display for voice and visible controls
A speaker can provide voice access to compatible devices; a display can make controls or alerts visible. Decide where it belongs in the home, and review microphone and camera settings before placing it in shared or private spaces. Convenience does not remove the need to supervise children’s use or to check what information the product collects and shares.

3. A video doorbell for arrival alerts
A doorbell camera can show or alert you when someone is at the door. Before buying, check its wiring or battery requirements, whether it supports an in-home chime, what recording and alert features are included, and whether useful video history requires a paid plan. Google’s setup guide explains pairing Nest speakers as a chime and describes plan-dependent video history and alerts within its own ecosystem; those details should not be assumed to apply to other brands or remain unchanged.
4. A smart thermostat for app-based climate control
A connected thermostat can add app or smart-platform controls for home climate. Confirm compatibility with your heating and cooling equipment and the manufacturer’s update support. It should not replace careful temperature settings or adult oversight: the ACCC gives an erroneous thermostat reset as an example of a software problem affecting a household setting.

5. A smart lock or a safety alarm, depending on the need
These address different household needs, so choose one based on the problem you actually want to solve. A smart lock may help manage access; a smoke or carbon monoxide alarm addresses a separate safety need. Check installation requirements and have a safe fallback for power or connectivity failures. A connected lock or app is not a substitute for a dependable offline plan, and connected safety features do not replace a functioning alarm.
Privacy, safety, and offline expectations
Connected devices rely on a working network, software, and continued manufacturer support. The ACCC advises consumers to consider network and software requirements, update support, and device condition; keep devices away from hazards; and follow age restrictions or adult-supervision guidance. A faulty update, lost connection, discontinued support, or cybersecurity problem can affect how a device works.

For privacy, the ICO recommends checking collection and sharing practices, app permissions, security-update support, and passwords. Treat that page as consumer advice rather than an immutable legal interpretation, since the ICO says it is reviewing the guidance. No smart speaker, camera, doorbell, lock, thermostat, or app guarantees safety or replaces adult supervision.

A practical shortlist before you buy
- Write down the routine or problem you want to address, and decide which of the five categories fits it.
- Check compatibility with your current platform, including hub needs and any feature limitations.
- Confirm installation and home requirements: wiring, HVAC equipment, Wi-Fi coverage, chimes, and accessories.
- Review child access and supervision needs, plus how the device behaves when slow or offline.
- Read privacy controls and update-support commitments; add any subscription-dependent features and required accessories to the ongoing cost.
- Choose a safe fallback for loss of power, connectivity, or software support.
