The best smart home control setup is the one that works with the devices and phone ecosystem you already use. Before choosing a hub, speaker, display, or app, check whether it supports your devices, whether it can act as the controller they need, and which features remain available through your preferred platform.
What counts as a smart home control device?
Smart home control can come from several places: a phone app, a voice interface, a smart display, or a hub/controller. These roles can overlap, but they are not interchangeable by default. A speaker or display may offer voice or touchscreen control without providing every hub function a device needs.
For example, Google documents control through Google Home and voice interfaces, while Apple describes control through the Home app and Siri. The right arrangement depends on the chosen ecosystem and the products in your home. Google Home and Nest Help: Prepare your smart home for Matter; Apple: Set up your smart home.

Start with the ecosystem that already connects your household’s phones and smart devices. Then check the exact device model against the platform’s current compatibility information. Matter can make cross-platform use easier: Google says Matter-enabled devices can be controlled through multiple Matter-certified smart home apps, and Apple describes Matter as enabling accessories to work across platforms. That does not guarantee that every model, control, or advanced feature works on every platform.

Confirm support for the functions you care about—such as dimming, lock controls, sensor actions, or automations—on the platform you intend to use. Do you need a Matter hub or controller?
Possibly. Requirements depend on the platform and what you want to do. Google says a hub is needed to set up, control, and automate Matter devices while away from home. A setup that works locally or through an app at home may not provide the same remote access or automation when you are away. Check the requirements for the specific ecosystem and use case before buying.
Do not assume that a speaker or display automatically fulfills every controller requirement. Confirm that the specific product is supported as a Matter hub/controller for the devices and functions you plan to use. Check that the platform supports your device types
Compatibility is not only about whether a product carries a Matter label. Platforms document support for particular categories, and those lists can differ. Google’s compatible-device information includes lighting and electrical products. Amazon’s documented Matter categories also include hubs, sensors, locks, window coverings, thermostats, fans, air purifiers, appliances, and robotic vacuums. These are platform-specific documentation lists, not a guarantee that every item in a category works with every app or supports every feature.
Look up the exact device category and model in the ecosystem’s official compatibility information, then confirm any feature limits that matter to your household. Google Home and Nest Help: Prepare your smart home for Matter; Amazon Developer: Matter support.
Compare control options and away-from-home needs
Choose how household members will normally interact with the devices. An app may be sufficient for occasional adjustments; voice control can suit hands-busy routines; and a display can make status and controls visible at a glance. Confirm which interface supports each device and whether it exposes the controls you want. Apple documents Home app and Siri control, while Google documents Google Home app and voice control options. If you need to check devices or run automations while away, treat remote access as a separate requirement rather than assuming it follows from local control. Verify that the selected ecosystem and controller support the away-from-home functions you intend to use. Google Home Help: Control your Matter devices.
A practical checklist before you buy
- List what you already own. Note the phone ecosystem, smart devices, and the specific controls or automations you want to keep.
- Check exact compatibility. Use the platform’s current official list for each device model; a Matter label alone does not establish feature parity across apps.
- Confirm the hub/controller role. Determine whether the chosen setup needs a separate controller for setup, remote control, or automation, and whether the candidate device is documented for that role.
- Verify categories and functions. Check support for the device types in your home and for the individual functions you expect to use.
- Choose the control interface. Decide whether app, voice, or display interaction suits the household, and confirm that your devices expose the needed controls there.
- Check away-from-home use. If remote access or automation matters, confirm it is supported by the full setup, not just by one product in isolation.
Platform capabilities and compatibility lists can change. Check the official guidance shortly before purchase rather than relying on a general category description.
